    windows is a b****

that brings up a ton of questions DF... what is the holdup? lack of paid resources working the problem or inability of the kernels?

    windows is a b****

and there are some post DX6 games that run very well on linux. i play call of duty on mine. i believe linux is getting very close to being a viable alternative to MS for the average user.

    windows is a b****

xp has been the most fire and forget ms system i have had. my laptop goes everywhere and logs onto any domain without a problem. my workstation doesnt get rebooted for weeks at a time. i do follow certain rules to keep it running correctly. most notably i never install a service pack or program updates on top of the running system. i always slipstream install.

XP installed, but wouldn't format over W2K :(

it sounds like you tried to install XP after it was already booted. boot from the cd rom

    Linksys wireless connection dropping...

i had the same problem awhile back. 2 different wireless cards connecting to a motorola wireless access point in an apartment complex with many different wireless routers in the area. (properly setup with WEP, shared key, and it's own channel) the cheap 12$ netgear card never lost connection and was the furthest computer away with the most walls to go through. the 40$ linksys card always lost connection for no reason and was only 15 feet away. so i switched the linksys card with a dlink card and the problem was solved. furthermore... i brought the linksys card over to my house which is very remote and put it in my neighbors computer 300+ feet away from my dlink wireless router (with the same settings). over a couple of weeks time it never lost connection or lost any connection speed. i think it's possible that linksys cards get confused in a noisy wireless environment.

    How do I install Java

did u cut and paste the commands? i did that first and realized that the folder name is different. i had to delete the symlink and type it in using the correct folder name i believe it's 1.5."something" instead of just 1.5.0

    How do I install Java

pretty sure your missing the sym link. read thru http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#rpm go down to the "enable and configure" it shows how and where to put that link.

Where is the data hiding in XP?

i have a 5 gig system partition. system restore is at 200meg (the min), and the swap is 512meg. also ie sets aside some ungodly amount of space for the dang cached pages. if u got broadband set that to about a meg.

    ive REALLY done it now.

the long steady beep is usually a hardware failure somewhere like power. it would help to know what the equipment is. in the old days we would put the battery back in BACKWARDS for 2 seconds. thats how u used to clear the cmos.

    Mandrake Success Story

i really like mandrake 2005. it's taken me 1 step closer to 100% linux. with the newest nvidia drivers all my games work, open office 2 kicks butt.... now if i could only figure out how to use wine dammit.

    Ultimate Slipstream Guide (almost)

My opinions about Knoppix, Live Linux on CD

i installed a couple fedora ditros. my complaints were that it wouldnt mount ntfs without some trickery and it didnt do very well with my dual xeons or the quadro. mandriva and gentoo did ok in that department but i still had to roll my own kernel to fix some minor problems with hyperthreading and smp

My opinions about Knoppix, Live Linux on CD

that is hilarious i also d/l'ed knoppix for "testing" a couple months ago. then said the same thing. "i think i'll buy another hd and start testing" i tested so many different distos and reinstalled so many times that i could hear that harddrive panting. i settled on mandrake for home and gentoo for work and cad stuff. i installed open office 2 so i could have a database and crossover for quicken, photoshop and acrobat. (didnt have time to get into wine) now i use linux 99.9% of the time and i pitch it to my (small) clients who need to modernize but cant afford all microsoft. it was fun too

    XP Wireless Connection Issues

i have to post to this one because it's a relevent fyi. many people have complained that the d-link dwl-510 rev b (atheros chip) randomly drops connection and only a reboot will reconnect. ive eliminated the motorola wap because the win98 machine with the trendware card never ever drops. some linux users report the same problem.

Latest NVIDIA drivers - no more Override Refresh Rate?

lol i was kinda looking around wondering if anyone was going to say anything. it really screwed things up. i found a little program a couple weeks ago that unlocks some hidden cp's in the nvidia drivers that works well for the refresh rates as well as other things. it worked great and wasnt a tsr proggy. maybe someone could post it here or i will when i get home

im wrestling with a small problem configuring my dlink wireless card in mandrake 10.2 these are the steps i took: install card, put driver cd in in root typed ndiswrapper -i /path-to/neta3ab.inf (my windows driver) ndiswrapper -l drivers installed neta3ab hardware present modprobe ndiswrapper fatal:ndiswrapper module not loaded during the boot post i see a line that says something like: ndiswrapper module, device specific settings not found delaying start. hmmm so i type iwconfig and i get a message that none of the devices have wireless extensions what am i missing here?
