  1. xp has been the most fire and forget ms system i have had. my laptop goes everywhere and logs onto any domain without a problem. my workstation doesnt get rebooted for weeks at a time. i do follow certain rules to keep it running correctly. most notably i never install a service pack or program updates on top of the running system. i always slipstream install.

  2. i had the same problem awhile back. 2 different wireless cards connecting to a motorola wireless access point in an apartment complex with many different wireless routers in the area. (properly setup with WEP, shared key, and it's own channel)

the cheap 12$ netgear card never lost connection and was the furthest computer away with the most walls to go through.

the 40$ linksys card always lost connection for no reason and was only 15 feet away.

so i switched the linksys card with a dlink card and the problem was solved.

    furthermore...

i brought the linksys card over to my house which is very remote and put it in my neighbors computer 300+ feet away from my dlink wireless router (with the same settings). over a couple of weeks time it never lost connection or lost any connection speed.

i think it's possible that linksys cards get confused in a noisy wireless environment.

  3. did u cut and paste the commands?

i did that first and realized that the folder name is different. i had to delete the symlink and type it in using the correct folder name i believe it's 1.5."something" instead of just 1.5.0

  4. what service pack of xp do u have? was sp2 added on top of an existing install?

since xp is usually pretty good with usb devices i would check the printer on another computer 1st.

ps: i had a lexmark not work spanky new out of the box. they had great customer service and replaced it the next day

  5. hmm acrobat 7 pro, and quicken 2005 are the 2 main

    pc anywhere would be nice

photoshop7, call of doody and that stuff works fine.

im just not too sure how wine works and how to tweak it. still reading all the documentation. any insider tips would be much appreciated

  6. i installed a couple fedora ditros. my complaints were that it wouldnt mount ntfs without some trickery and it didnt do very well with my dual xeons or the quadro.

mandriva and gentoo did ok in that department but i still had to roll my own kernel to fix some minor problems with hyperthreading and smp

  7. that is hilarious

i also d/l'ed knoppix for "testing" a couple months ago.

then said the same thing. "i think i'll buy another hd and start testing"

i tested so many different distos and reinstalled so many times that i could hear that harddrive panting.

i settled on mandrake for home and gentoo for work and cad stuff.

i installed open office 2 so i could have a database and crossover for quicken, photoshop and acrobat. (didnt have time to get into wine) now i use linux 99.9% of the time and i pitch it to my (small) clients who need to modernize but cant afford all microsoft.

    it was fun too

  8. i have to post to this one because it's a relevent fyi.

many people have complained that the d-link dwl-510 rev b (atheros chip) randomly drops connection and only a reboot will reconnect.

ive eliminated the motorola wap because the win98 machine with the trendware card never ever drops. some linux users report the same problem.

  9. lol i was kinda looking around wondering if anyone was going to say anything. it really screwed things up.

i found a little program a couple weeks ago that unlocks some hidden cp's in the nvidia drivers that works well for the refresh rates as well as other things. it worked great and wasnt a tsr proggy. maybe someone could post it here or i will when i get home

  10. for ndiswrapper i used the urpmi command

kernel is the vanilla one that came with the 10.2, kernel v2.6.11 with all source and headers. ill check for sure when i get back over there.

    the card is d-link dwl-g510 (rev b)airplus g pci

what command tells what options the kernel has?
