Star Trek Armada goes really slow!

Star Trek Armada with the 1.2 patch runs ok in xp, but the actual gameplay is extremely slow. I've found this to be the case in pretty much any system over 2.0Ghz. I've tried a couple of programs that claim to "slow the processor down," but they just use up cpu time, rather than emulate a slow processor... already tried the app compatiblity toolkit, with no luck.

    Spam! Spam! Spam! Spam!

K9 (search on majorgeeks.com) seems to work good, as well it's gotta be trained, it's getting 98% for me so far.

    CPU Temperature Advice

the case makes a difference too.. not nessesary to goto exremes like me, (total of 10 fans in case) but at 3.2ghz same cpu (overclocked of course) gets up to 45 celcius, when being maxed out. using the original cooler supplied by intel.

Problem with the hard drive movie/clone

in the console you should also try "fixboot" "fixmbr" just does the master boot record, "fixboot" does the initial boot files.
  5. I just select the other drive in the bios on this box

64Bit Computing, A bit too much?

I'm thinking back to when the Pentium replaced the 486... it wasn't all that fast either, took a couple years. it all goes back to software support, if the 64bit apps aren't out yet, there's not much point in going 64bit now, especially when if you wait till the apps are out, the 64bit cpu will likely be much faster anyway.

    GOT GAS?

it's about 80cents/L in northern Alberta. strange considering that the main supply of oil in Canada is up here... and as for hugeness the nearest decent sized city is a 5 hour drive away, the next one is another 3 hours. all in the same province. (province = state) I feel sorry for the people who live further north, they get to drive lots just to get to the store... of course they could always use the good old dogsled.

    Hibernation??

as far as hibernation itself is concerned, it won't hurt yer drive. I've had it fail once, but then you just get windows to boot normally, it gives some error messages, but it's ok afterwards. I seem to recall something about a patch from microsoft about that. but no, it can't physically damage the drive.

    Hibernation??

On my laptop I use hibernation lots (xp pro) because it does load faster/saves that load time on the battries. but on a desktop machine I don't see the point, unless it's a really slow machine... reboots are nessesary even on xp. in the long run more reboots will save ya time by keeping yer memory less cluttered.

    Final Fantasy 7 : HELP

there's a RivaTNT patch at www.patches-scrolls.de for FF7, all the patch does is make the game forget about the 8bit problem. I've used it on my Radeon 8500, worked good. I dunno about it working on winXP though. (was on win98se at the time.)

AMD To be a threat to Intel?

Anyone know if the P5 is gonna be 64bit? I've heared something about advanced Hyperthreading, as well as a new socket, but not much else.

    Lesson learned

I've seen that too, a lot of it depends on the case, a well ventolated case makes a big difference. another thing amd has done with their coolers is make it use all 3 clips on the socket, making it more reliable (I've seen a few heatsinks break off in shipping). If they keep on this trend, they'll be giving intel another run for their money.
  14. try www.asuscom.de or www.asus.tw if ya have trouble with German use ftp.asuscom.de it's not hard to find stuff on, also seems more up to date usually.

    Lesson learned

I'm an OEM System builder... have built 1000's of machines. I find that AMD based systems all seem to run way too hot. I mean 50degrees+ is too much for a stock cooled/stock clocked/stock volted system. I run my p4 2.4HT at 3.0 without voltage increase or cooling mods (stock cooler no thermal grease) and it's between 30 and 40 degrees depending on how much load I put on it (never above 40, even maxed out) Ja get what Ja pay for
  16. I got 2 machines running windows xp (1 desktop using a 3com905c nic, and an aopen laptop with integrated nic) the thing is that randomly both machines disable their nic, go into device manager, hit enable, and it works for a while till it disables itself again. any ideas?
  17. techie32

    nic automatically disables itself

actually that's one of the first things I've tried, I've set both machines to be always on for all devices hoping that would make a difference, I've also uncoiled the cable (2 short loops), taking out the driver, so windows would have to find it again with no difference. PS Canucks RULE

    remote connectivity

I need to find an efficient way to grab files from several computers over the phone lines almost exactly backwards of a good o' bbs. any ideas all the boxes are win9x of some description, security isn't much of an issue.

Help Whit ff 7 and Win xp

to solve the 8bit test you need to install a patch that fixes the Nvidia cards. it works for most newer 3d cards (including my ati). however I recall hearing that ya can't get all the way thru the game in xp.

Sound in DOS under VMware ?

virtual pc just reboots my whole system whenever I try to fire up the virtual machine... it's winxp pro, P41500, 768 RDram on a Asus p4t mobo, sbaudigy, all drives on 29160 scsi adapter, ati aiw radeon, ect. Other than that my system is rock solid, even startrek armada runs good (known to not run so hot).

Sound in DOS under VMware ?

vmware doesn't support emm386 properly, it only work with the /noems switch. I've been trying to get good old Privateer to work, but no luck because of that. virtual pc doesn't seem to like my machine, just reboots when starting the emulation. winxppro p4 1.5, 768mb rambus
