    Taskmanager tomfoolery.. help.

sigh.. and if I'd taken the time to search MS help.. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;193050 well, at least I learned taskmanager can run in "tiny footprint mode".
  2. Grr, major annoyance here. I'm running 2k sp4. I have an old game that I wanted to run in 95 compatibility mode (wing commander1). So I used the command line info from here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279792 and it worked such that the game started and didnt drop back to desktop. However the game had some errors with the mouse and after tweaking I was able to get back to normal vid resolution of the desktop and get out of the game without having to hard reboot. This showed some direct draw error or something in task manager. The problem is, now task manager just shows up as a box showing current "tasks", not any of the other normal stuff like cpu usage/ram usage etc.. I turned off compat mode and that didnt fix the issue, rebooted etc... any ideas?? Also, I can shut off task manager from the tray icon but thats the only way. TIA

XP crashes and other tomfoolery, Advice wanted.

Thanks, I'll relay that. I thought to have him run memtest86 last night and he says he's getting errors with that and he is getting errors while running standard things in linux. He's gonna check each stick seperately next, then try installs.
  4. A buddy is having problems with XP on his desktop. It has been having random crashes, won't install warcraft 3 (other games have worked fine), windows XP has install issues i.e.: "the file zipfldf32.dll would not copy over at all" He's running a abit kr7a-133r bios CX (latest) XP 2000 chip, 512ram( 2 256mb crucial) , audigy, Ti4400 abit vid card. It seems it started mostly after a bios flash and the install of the xp 2000 (it was previously an 1800). Several reformats have done nothing to improve things. He's used 3 different XP install disks with the same issue. I'm at a loss as to what could be the problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. TIA

160GB hard drive format prob. in 2k

Actually, it came with a controller card . My board supports the higher sizes tho, just not win2k sp2. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions etc. I got it working via the reg. hack after up[censored] to sp3. Turns out I entered the value key wrong in hex the first time but it shows up as a 152GB drive in windows and PM now. Just have to resize it etc.

160GB hard drive format prob. in 2k

Yeah, I should have mentioned my specs in my original post. I fairly sure its not a mobo issue as the bios detects the full drive just fine and apparently it is an issue in win2k up to SP3. Im running an Abit NF7S nforce2 mobo with the latest bios. Guess I may just look into making a copy of my win2k disc with sp3 streamlined in..and reinstalling..sigh.
  7. Recently picked up a Maxtor 160GB drive but 2k only sees 131GB on install since Im using a service pack 2 disk. I've upgraded to SP3 now so is there a way I can get my "lost" 30gb or so recognized? Or am I going to have to figure out how to burn a new 2k install disc with sp3 streamlined in? TIA

Question on 2k and XP file sharing on a lan

Yeah, I can ping both machines, users are setup ( I think ) and shares are setup. Neither machine is running a firewall.
  9. Im having trouble getting a XP box and a 2k box to see each other on a lan. Both are connected to a hub which is connected to the cable modem and each has its own IP. Neither can see each other to share files. I've added Netbui, IPX etc. & both are on the same subnet. The only differences settings wise is the last two numbers of the IP are different on the XP box ie 12.224.xxx.xx and the default gateway IP is different for the XP machine. Any ideas on how to get them to see each other? TIA

    Ortek MCK800 keyboard

Thanks, I tried their drivers and its a no go. So I'm pretty sure the keyboard is fubar or something. Still only the top row of letter keys work. Sigh, oh well.

    Ortek MCK800 keyboard

Anyone had any problems getting this to work? The software installs fine and some of the keys work (including the power on/off) but several rows of keys dont work at all. Win2k still shows it as a standard 101/102 keyboard so I'm thinking its a driver issue but perhaps the kb is just bad. Unfortunately, I cant find any actual drivers to use for 2k other than the stupid install for the OSD crap and quick buttons. TIA
