Why doesn't Winnt4 come with a defrag Utility

Recommended Posts

Is Winnt4 meant to have a default defrag utility?

It seems everywhere on the net i search there is a third party program called disk keeper that needs t be bought.

Why doesn't the OS come with all neccessary system tools?

I have installed "Original WinNT (no service packs)" And i have applied sp6.

Cheers

NT did not come with a defrag utility as MS claimed NTFS did not require it (oops). If you would like to defrag your volumes, you will need a 3rd party utility like Diskeeper. Or, you could do what MS recommends and format your partitions, then restore from backup.

DiskKeeper is really good. Fast defragmenting, boot time defrag, Frag guard--keeps files from getting fragmented in the first place.

The only OS that still doesnt have any defragmenter is Linux. While there are ones out there, even the programmer says you really shouldnt use it.

Not that that really does anything, but at least its consistant.

Do get disk Keeper, though.

If not that one, dont get perfect disk--its really slow. Norton speed disk is also a very good defrag utility.

Hi

Yeah, Diskeeper is an excellent defragger.

If you're running NT 4 you can get yourself a freeware version called Diskeeper Lite. This doesn't defrag the page file, registry etc. but it's still pretty good. It's very similar to the copy of Diskeeper bundled with Windows 2000.

Check out the Executive Software website for more info.

You might want to check out this lot:

www.sysinternals.com

Amongst other things they have a Page File/Registry defrag utility.

Lots of other handy apps for NT as well.

Happy hunting
