Mandrake 9.2 - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Recommended Posts

Mandrake 9.2 was released to the general public yesterday and overall it was worth the wait with a few reservations that I will soon mention...

First the "Good", as usual Mandrake included just about everything but the kitchen sink on their three 9.2 download ISOs. Now, having said that, they could have included Mozilla 1.5, XMMS 1.2.8 and the final release of OpenOffice 1.1 for as long it took them to finally get 9.2 out but I guess the LG CD ROM thing was their main concern.

Now for the "Bad" (assuming you already know about the LG CD ROM issue) there are some setup issues that can be a bit of a pain in the arse. Mozilla, Mozplugger, Screensavers, XMMS, MPlayer, XPdf, Evolution and Xine all should install by default, unfortunately you have to add them manually. I found it's better to include these while installing Mandrake as opposed to after. If you use Mandrake Update or install software from the Configuration then Packaging menu it may hose up your KDE application menu. If you run Menudrake choosing the Environment menu, select All Environments followed by clicking Save on the toolbar then it's fairly easy to correct this issue. It would have been great if Sun's Java VM was included with the OS along with RealPlayer too but they both work without issue after downloading and installing the RPM's (no biggie).

The "Ugly" is definitely the silly house icon for "Home", other than that MPlayer is still choppy with streamed video and they really do need to include some better background along with KDE's (these old ones are getting very tired).

Like I've said before, Mandrake is probably the easiest distribution to install and use for the average newbie. Version 9.1 is less buggy than 9.2 and if I wanted to be a little more criticle I'd say 9.1 is a better release simply because more useful applications are installed by default (leaving Mozilla out of the default install was a dumb move).

One parting thought, Fedora (Red Hat) still doesn't measure up to Mandrake in my book, very little has changed except the name. My main complaint with Red Hat is that Sun's Java VM usually doesn't work with their OS and any release of Mozilla (since Red Hat 7.3) even after many bugzilla reports to Red Hat on the issue by myself and others.

Mandrake does have support for a lot of ATI video cards, unfortunately yours is not listed as one of them. These are the closest to the 9700 Pro I could find...no guarantee they will work. The ATI site might have some solutions for you.

Thanks for the info, but I tried all that.

The problem is I have to get Linux into the GUI so i can download the drivers, since I am running it in a virtual pc

I find it hard to believe it doesn;t have a basic VGA driver just to get you by till you can configure your Video Card.

Tell me what driver you need and I'll download it and send it to you, if your mail servier can handle the size...

I have tried to install Mandrake Linux 9.2 but can't get X windows to work properly. If I start Linux normally I just get a blank screen. If I start in 'failsafe mode' then under root I can start the font server and then Xwindows. It would appear that there is some problem with the font server when starting normally but I don't have a clue how to fix it. I heard a rumour that Mandrake re-issued the iso binaries but I don't know how to tell which I have and whther this is even true. As far as I can tell there is no specific support for my NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 card though the 'nv' driver appears to work. I tried to install the FX5200 driver from Nvidia but it appears that I don't have the appropriate level of kernel. Where can i find the kernel source for this release so that I can compile the NVIDIA driver?

This is all very frustrating - Mandrake Linux 9.0 installed like a dream.

Thanks

I feel your pain. I ran MDK 9.0 a long time and tried to update to 9.1 having similar problems with my gforce. I had to run xf86config for the first time with 9.1. I finally gave up and went back to 9.0. When 9.2 came out I tried again with similar disappointments. I now run RH 9 as a result...

Many other folks experiences have been different though. I've seen a lot of positive posts from happy users of 9.1 and 9.2.

Even more frustrating as I only tried to move to 9.2 as I couldn't get the NVIDIA drivers to work in 9.0. To cap it all I confidently expected the 9.2 CDs to upgrade my 9.0 installation maintaining my data. That was a false expectation.....

Ouch! Never assume your data is safe. How did you set up the partitions? Like Daper Dan said if you had a /home and did not format that partition your data is still on that disk. Post what ya know I will try to help youthe best I can.

Thanks for your kind offer. I'm not worried about the data - it is all backed up - I was just disappointed that it wasn't preserved when I selected the install/upgrade option. Much more important to me is to get 9.2 working. Any advice on the font server problem would be much appreciated.
