Sappphire Radeon HD 4890 1GB video card review @ Elite Bastards

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Ever since its launch AMD's Radeon HD 4870 has been enjoying a significant amount of success for the company, offering a hugely tantalising blend of high performance and reasonable pricing and leveraging the strengths of arguably the best architecture to come from AMD since the infamous R300. Now, the time has come for RV770 to get a refresh, which launches today as the Radeon HD 4890. Making use of an RV790 chip it features higher core and memory clocks, but is it enough to tempt yet more enthusiasts to buy AMD?

Sappphire Radeon HD 4890 1GB video card review

"The Radeon HD 4890 features a fully functional RV790 core, with a reference board sporting a core clock speed of 850 MHz (compared to 750MHz for a Radeon HD 4870). A standard part also features either 1GB of GDDR5 memory, clocked at 975MHz (against 900MHz on a reference Radeon HD 4870 board) - As with the Radeon HD 4870, due to the unique properties of this new memory standard over its predecessors which allows for double the bandwidth to be transferred per pin per clock cycle, the effective speed of these memory modules are 3.9GHz (compared to 3.6GHz on this board's predecessor."
