CPU Decision(help me quick!)

Recommended Posts

Hey, Tomorrow(Monday the 28th), I'm going out to buy myself a Socket 370 CPU

I have to decide between a CuMine 800(100mhz FSB), CuMine 800(133mhz FSB), or a Celeron2 600(66mhz FSB) which I'll try to overclock to 100FSB(making it 900mhz).

What would your recomendation be?

I'll be using a ThermalTake Golden Orb heatsink/fan

Specs are below(PC100 RAM)

if you are going to o/c the 800, then get the 100mhz bus, b/c the 800 w/ the 133 bus will be a lot less stable when o/c...i'm running an 800, not o/c on a bx chipset, and it works great...it goes over 900mhz, but you really don't need it to...

So go for the 800/100 over the 800/133?

I'm not interested in oc'ing the 800s...I figure they're high enough already.

Any more opinions?

Seeing that you got the motherboard that I recommended... ("Towel thrown in" post), I would go for the 800/133FSB. And you're right, at that speed, no need to O/C.

However, the great advantage of the CUSL2 is it's ability to overclock. The only problem is that overclocking is a hit or miss prospect. I've got a C466 that overclocks to 584 w/o any rise in temp, and then I've also got a C433 that can't be overclocked at all... (it hits 41 centigrade when running at 433...)

My money would be on the 800/133 (actually my money will be on the same combo CUSL2/800-133CPU.)

HTH.

Not to burst your bubble, but I had decided on the CUSL2 before you said anything :P

the 820 would be nice, but RDRAM? not a chance

I bought the 800eb, and will OC it shortly--after I get Win98 installed on my 63 bad sector ATA-2 1 GB hdd :P

Gonna run it nonstop for a few days until the Golden Orb heatsink I ordered arrives.

Then it should be *ahem* ripe for overclocking smile

I thought about the 750/100...it was about $50 cheaper...but I figured that even at it's best MhZ setting, my 133 would go higher, even if my CPU mhz was lower(the 7.5x compared to the 6x clock settings).

I hope, that instead of coming close to 1 ghz, and maxing out at 133 with the 750, that I could possibly get near 900, and have a FSB of...whatever the math is. but higher than 133.

And a special note--this thing posted the first time I powered on.

On my K7V, it didn't(had to reset the power or something by causing a short?). Is this a sign of good things to come? I hope so.

POP! Just kidding.

I just thought it was funny that you threw the towel in on an Athlon system, and I was tossing the towel in on my Tyan S1856BX/466Celeron system at the same time. And I had already researched what motherboard I was going to be replacing this one with. (As to my reason why, I can't get multimon to work on this motherboard - with video cards known to work for others...)

Oh well. You're just a few days ahead of me... smile

Hey, INFERNO fire me some email, when you get it overclocked about it's performance.

Hey...using a "stock" $9 cooler to hold over till my Golden Orb arrives, I managed to keep my CPU at 87 degrees..despite 9 hours of Quake3 high setting with all the bots and stuff, Seti@home, and 10 media players running simultaneously.

Pretty damned good smile

Accidentally overclocked it to 900

so instead of being 800/133/100/33, it's now 900/150/112/37, and rock solid

just increased the CPU temp up to 98 degrees, and the mobo up to 91..and the CPU dropped to 95 after about 2 minutes.

Damn I love this computer again smile

Next step: 966 mhz and running fine.

But the CPU temp monitor seems to be screwy? It detects my CPU as being 60 degrees, my motherboard 91, and the room temp is currently 78, so....WTF?

I'm just curious why you'd want to overclock the processor, as if 800 Mhz isn't enough anyway, why force it up to 966? Firstly it will invalidate your warrenty, and then when stuff starts crashing, and you downclock it again, but that doesn't solve it, you could very well back in here complaining about it.

I myself have an Athlon 800 classic and Asus K7V, the very board you got rid of to get your new intel system, and I've had minimal problems under Windows 2000, mostly getting Windows to install the correct agp driver.

What is this fascination of getting new cpu's and vid cards and overclocking the f**k out of it?

"Oooooh look, my new 1Ghz Athlon T-Bird, I'm gonna overclock it!!!!"

Whats the point!!!!????

I'm not leveling any critisim toward you Inferno, I'm just curious in general why people want to overclock?

Pretty much just to see what I could get it to do.

I'm back down to 800 now...

No point in keeping it that high really...

I just wanted to see what it could do.

And...

I did it because I have a 7 day moneyback garauntee warranty from the place that sold it to me. I wanted to see what I could do before I would HAVE to be absolutely careful in my actions.

i.e. if I burned it up in the first few days, I could take it back, and they'd replace it.

But after that, I'm on my own(excluding the intel warranty)

You had the KV7 with audio then?

Thats the difference between my system and yours. (well old one)

I will agree I'm far from happy with the VIA chipset, and have pondered several times switching back to Win 98/ME.

But I'm sticking with it, and it runs the stuff I want to really well. Unreal Tournament is sweeet!!!!

Later...

I had a choice between hatreds.

Win9x

or VIA chipset and Win2k

I chose the new chipset, and kept 2k smile

Otherwise, I was VERY happy with my Athlon system.

But....I love this one smile

I also run the AMD Athlon 750 but on the FIC SD11 MB. With the new ATi Radeon card and SB Live! X-Gamer I love my system and my petium friends come over to game it a lot. And the ADSL connection they dig too......
