The system idle process is not actually a process.

It just shows how idle your system is.

If it is 99%, then there are almost no activity, your computer is idling. And, if it is near 0%, then your system is doing something, which requires cpu a lot, like playing nice fps game,etc.

There is a third possible cause to the crashing. One or more of the capacitors may be bad. I bought a used system and it locked up like that also. I replaced the RAM, the HD, the video card. Then I started checking the motherboard. I found a bad capacitor. The tops of the capacitors are flat. This one had a bulge to it. This is the second time I've come across this. Just take a look for any bulges in the capacitors.

Yes, it could be a power issue, though I doubt it since it only happens when you are the internet. It may be Internet Explorer causing the problem if it only happens when you are on the internet, such as downloading something. Try first going to Help and Support on your start menu and do all of the updates for Windows XP and see if that doesn't solve the problem. If it doesn't, if possible, try to download Mozilla Firefox from http://www.Mozilla.org. If you get that downloaded, install it and see if Firefox causes your PC to crash. If you have done an install of Windows, you may have to do it again and make sure that you completely wipe the hard drive. Run the Windows installer, delete the partition, then format the hard drive. Then complete the install. You will know that you have a completely fresh install after that.

A simplified version af what virtual memory does...

 

With virtual memory, what the computer can do is look at RAM for areas that have not been used recently and copy them onto the hard disk. This frees up space in RAM to load the new application.

 

Adding some more memory (256MB) would fix the problem.

 

Just to be sure about your crash/lock up problem...

 

It happens ONLY when you a downloading not when you are playing games ect...?

My computer kept crashing when I was trying to do a Windows update also. Check the capacitors. I may be wrong but, it won't hurt to take a look. Just remember they are to be flat on top and shiny. If you see any brown material on top it is bad also.

1. Put up your shields:

Install Service Pack 2 of windows XP. That's foolish

to be running around on the internet without your

system being protect from known exploits. You

undoubtedly already have malware on your system, even

though you just re-installed. They have found malware

on unpatched windows 98 systems attached to the

internet in as little as 5 minutes! Once you've

installed service pack 2, enable the auto-up[censored]

service and even let it auto-install. Then download

Microsoft update so it'll keep your copy of MS office

secure if you have one. Install all the updates.

 

2. Now that you're protected get the junk off your

system:

RAM, shouldn't prevent crashing unless you have faulty

RAM. This can be tested using the ultimateboot cd:

However 256 totally sucks on XP. You should have at

least 768, but preferably 1GB or more. Having

insufficient RAM won't make your system crash it'll just

go more slowly. Whoever mentioned upgrading the ram

and that it prevent crashing that is probably for one

of two reasons the old ram was faulty and was removed

in order to put in the new stuff. The other reason it

would crash less is you still had a memory leak it just

took longer to become a problem, in which case you

didn't really fix the problem, just made it more

bearable. www.Crucial.com is the easiest place to

order from, however they're expensive. It's a great

place to determine how much ram your system can take,

how many slots you have, and what kind of ram is

supported. Then if you want you can either order from

them or use froogle.com or pricewatch.com and find

something cheaper.

 

Disable Kaspersky and see what happens. If that doesn't

fix it uninstall Kasperky and see what happens. Do the

same for your antivirus solution. Do you have one? If

not that's really irresponsible. You can get a good

free one at grisoft.com/free. Repeat the process for

your download managers.

 

Does your ISP employ some kind of software? Like AOL

or Yahoo DSL for example? Most of that stuff is

absolute bullshit and is totally unnecessary. I use

Yahoo DSL and I don't have one bit of their software

installed. It just creates an additional layer of

unstable software.

 

Power Supplies: Nothing future proofs a system.

However, yes if he ever uses SLI video then that

wouldn't be a bad option. However, I suggest buying

something more practical and if and when you decide you

must have SLI then you could get something like that.

For that kind of change you could buy a fanless power

supply, which I think is a more reasonable desire for

the average person, since everyone hates noise.

 

CPU Usage:

100% CPU usage will not make your system crash. It

will however make your system difficult to use. If

that 100% or close to it process isn't the one you're

trying or want to use you can terminate it from task

manager. I think we should define crashing. According

to Microsoft their OS has crashed when the numlock and

or capslock keys can't be turned on and off on your

keyboard. Using that as the rule, has your system

truly hardlocked? If not then it could be as Yankee

describes a particular process might be hogging your

system resources.

If your system is really behaving that strangely why don't you have a friend help you with this. Take your HD to their house or to work if your sysadmin is cool, plug in your HD as an additional (non-boot) drive. Run several up to date malware scanners on it. In the free category I recommend:

1. Trend Micro

2. Ad-Aware

3. SpyBot: Search & Destroy

Turn off your print spooler, you don't need it: control panel/administrative tools/services/disable print spooler.

 

You say you're not using Internet Explorer, but I see MDM.exe in your processes list. MDM(machine debug manager) starts with IE, but you say you aren't using IE. That's not good, MDM.exe is also the name of a Trojan.

 

Do a search for the file on your HDD, let us know where it's running from, as in what folder it's in.

Scan your system in safe mode with (at least) spybot search and destroy, adaware, ewido, avast!, stinger and what ever antimalware tools you can install to your computer. Ask your friend to download those and burn to cd, if you cannot download them.

 

And update your Windows! XP without service pack 2+latest updates is like leaving your house's backdoor wide open.

If you can format and re-install the OS, then it is not the OS. It is a hardware issue. My computer was doing the samething as yours Char27. One os the capacitors was bad. The capacitors are the cylinders with a X on top. I am willing to bet you that one of them has a domed top. the top is normally flat. Just take a look and let us know. You have tried everything else. I have even ran diagnostic software and it found nothing wrong. CHECK the capacitors.
