Solution for Chaos XP Problem

Recommended Posts

Guest

Right after a long grewling 6 hours of messing with setting try the following;

Uninstall

Re-install but ensure destination directory is eight charictors or less. I used (c:\chaos)

You must set Desktop resolution to 640x480,16 Bit colour, any refresh rate works up to 144 mhz

Use gpedit.msc to enable "run in seperate memory space" check box to run dialog box located under user configuration, administritive templates, start menu and task bar

Then goto start, run and type "command.com /c C:\chaos\WH40K.exe" without the quotation.

The game will now load and no longer crashes when the early level enimies fire.

Do not use the compatibility tool, always use the command line option. Even thou the compatibility tool enables the ability to load the game through the 32 bit enviroment it will crash very early in to the game.

I fixed this problem for my friend as he is a great fan of war hammer games so all thanx to Luke.

Man i tried this several times and no dice. All i get is a DOS window and it clicks back to desktop. Is it ok if i install the patches? I did it exactly how you are saying and the game wont launch. Same as before in that aspect cause you have to turn on comp. mode to get it to launch the other way, then it still crashes in game. You obvisiouly have some idea with this stuff which is nice that you are messin with it. Something else i need to do to get it to work? So its a 16 bit game trying to run on a 32 bit OS? Is that the problem? I gathered this is the issue from what i read those settings do and some other things. I do know that to fix the crackling sound you have to lower the sound card hardware acceleration down to BASIC and it it fixes the sound. There are ALOT of people that want to play this game but cant cause this crap, but thanks for the help man.

I dont think that it is a true 16 bit game but as I am not a programmer I can not truely quantify this, all I know is if you use the compatibility tool it makes the game load when you double click the wh40k.exe,but then it crashes shortly after you start a game.

The black screen part is definately to do with the resolution as it is switches modes, i have just set my resolution to 1020x768 and run the game, the game start to load in the command.com dos box, screen goes black and then it exits. I changed the resolution back to 640x480, started the game again and it loads fine. I have now also checked the colour depth and it still loads fine with either 16Bit colour or 32Bit colour.

The version I am running is the origional, no patches.

XP has Service pack 1 installed

Direct X V9.0a is installed and has not error on dxdiag

The Video Driver is nv4_disp.dll V6.14.0010.5216 WHQL (geforce4)

I know that you have said you have tried this but please ensure that the video resolution is 640x480 when the games is exicuted from the run menu.

I am going to my friends soon to fix the intallation that he has so I will be able to verify my results on a second pc with different hardware very soon. This will hopefully shed some light on the problem.

Yea i was at 640x480 reso cause i made sure of that but I had the patches installed. Looking at your specs i see youre using a nvidia video card. I USED to be able to play this game but thats when i had a nvidia card aswell. I just thought of that cause im running a ATI 9800 pro now. That may be some of the problem.Either way, unless it the patches causing it, the game wont launch with your method if i dont turn on comp. mode.

I tried both patches

XP service pack 1 installed

DirectX 9.0b

Cat 4.6 video drivers for the ATI 9800pro

I did get the game to work, but its kinda a temp solution since the program expires in 45 days. I installed Microsoft virtual PC and installed Windows ME for a OS and then the game. The game is playing fine on that under XP.Its using DirectX7 cause i didnt update it or anything but the game is patched.I played for over a hour with no crashes or lockups.
