XP Installation = UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME, HELP!!!!

Recommended Posts

Trying to install XP on a new machine, booting from cdrom. After the initial hoopla and drive formatting, windows must reboot. After it reboots I get the XP splash screen for a second and then a BSOD that says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

Hardware: MSI KT3 Ultra 2, PC2100 DDR, XP1800+, 40 Gig WD 8MB Cache, Elsa 16MB Vanta LT, Realtek NIC, Diamond Supra Modem, Onboard sound, onboard USB, 52XCDROM, 32X CDRW. Hard disk is Master on its own channel.

What I have done so far:

1. Pissed and moaned frown

2. Disabled USB and tried install and format again

3. Checked BIOS settings and tried to set everything as stable as pos.

4. Formatted drive using Full NTFS format (used quick format option before)

5. Raised fists in air and cursed VIA!

Please help, MS knowledge base isn't a help

Found the solution, installed Windows 2000, everything worked fine. Wonder why, never changed a setting after the last attempt.

I have had the same problem once and booted to the XP repair console with my CD and ran "chkdsk /r" It seemed to fix it for me.

as i've been reading from the MS page, it happens when your HD doesn't have UDMA support and/or the IDE connector u're using isn't an 80 pin one and the UDMA is enable via the bios or windows
