Hide/disable printer in 98SE

Recommended Posts

How can I hide or disable a printer so a child (11 year old, probably certitfied A+........) can't print to it other than removing the printer cable or disabling it in device manager (if you can)?

Win98 doesn't use NTFS, so you can't set permissions for objects.

So the only method I can think of is to set up a new hardware profile with the printer disabled in device manager. You will have a choice at bootup of which profile to use. It's not passworded protected either.

There are some wonderful programs out there such as window blinds or preferrably desktop X that allow you to fully customize the user environment. Soon as the kid logs on, his gui could be anything you want it to be, from full windows to an environment of your sole choosing. www.stardock.com

Yeah, but the printer will still be accesible from programs through File -> Print, WindowBlinds or DesktopX can't do anything about that...

True, unless you remove the start menu options from their GUI, you could limit their access sharply. Of course, when does the cure become worse than the ill...?
