Hard drive Question

Recommended Posts

I typically work with the Master/Slave jumpers on a hard drive. Cable Select is another option. Can someone give me the low down on that feature and benefits?

Cable select i find to be more unrelaiable on older hard disks / mainboards, and hence i always configure mine in a master / slave configuration, i've not found any disadvantage with all new kit mind you, but i'm still quite strictly abiding to the master / slave setup

There isn't any real advantage to using Cable Select.

As I'm sure you are aware, with a Master/Slave configuration it doesn't matter where on the cable each device is attached.

Eg. The cable could run from the motherboard to the Slave Device to the Master Device or Motherboard>Master>Slave.

It's the jumper which governs which device is which.

With doth devices set to 'Cable Select' the IDE channel is scanned and each device is detected in turn depending on where they appear on the cable.

Motherboard>First IDE device it finds>Second IDE device it finds

I've always stuck to Master/Slave and as long as I continue to use IDE devices I always will, in my eyes just makes sure each device is how you want it.
