no sound on RH 9.0

hey.. ive been trying to get sound on RH9.. but its not working.. ive ran the autodetect thinggy.. and every time i try and play the "test sound" it dosnt play anything...

 

im using onbord sound on the asus A7V8X-X mobo.. and the people who sold me the parts for the comptuer siad that it was FULLY compatible with linux.. so.. can anyoen tell me if there are any drivers or anyhting i could get to have sound?

Yes, check the alsamixer settings to see if the sound is not muted, or set the volume up all the way.

 

Is is a nForce motherboard. correct?

It is understandable if you want your on board sound to work, but if starts to be a real pain, just go to the computer store and buy a soundblaster. They're reasonably priced, will likely give better sound, and you'll retain more hair..

here is what i did so if you want it to happen do this.
fsck the nvidia drivers, sorry but the vanilla kernel 2.6.2 has plenty good built in modules that will do fine... for one nic and onboard working audio (thats all i wanted)

when configuring your kernel
go to
1. sound
2. alsa
3. pci devices
4. select Intel 8x0...............Nforce audio
5 make your kernel and install it
6. install your alsa drivers for 1.0.2c-2
7. now edit your modules.conf file or equivalent
8. reboot and make sure to open up alsamixer in the console and turn the sound on. ( for some dumb reason alsa starts up with no audio)

mind telling that to me in laymans terms?

also.. if i loose my hair i will look like bruce willas? is there any prob with that? its almost cut right off now.. so a little more wouldnt make a diffrence.. and i kinda dont wana have to spend anymore on this comptuer (just finished building it.. and it cost about 1.5k.. )

When you run the autodetect for the sound, is one of the choices the intel sound - try choosing that over the nforce choice.

 

Then make sure sound is not muted and turn it up all the way (the first slide bar on the left).

 

If using KDE, type in a console aumix or kmix.

 

Or look for the sound icon on the bottom right of the task bar and right click it, open the mixer and pump the sound up.

 

I don't know if the alsa system is in redhat, but at a console, type alsamixer and see if the guide bar is set up all the way.
