  1. Does anyone know where I can get a program that can list and kill processes on NT 3.51, and additionally where a compatible disk defragger can be downloaded (apparently Diskeeper 1 was NT 3.51 compatible).

    Maintenance apps for NT 3.51?

No sadly I didn't Apparently the only disk defrag app that I have ever heard of that got writtern for NT 3.x was Diskeeper 1! (so much for that). As for a taskmanger style program I have just about given up. Most of the utils on the otherwise brilliant www.sysinternals.com don't work on NT 3.x (a large chunk of the pstools included). I did hear whispers of an NT 3 resource kit with something resembling a process killer contained within... but if it ever existed I can find no links. Honestly how MS could market these earlier NT OSes as serious business products and NOT include a process monitor/killer is beyond me. On a completely different note do the Sun JRE plugins work on NT 3.51? (for the MS IE 5.01 and NS 4.75 browsers) I can get them to install but java sites don't seem to make use of them.
  3. How to I set autoplay settings and content type handlers for all drives to XP installed defaults? (for all users). TweakXP isn't quite as helpful here as I thought it might be. I'm guessing the registry keys involved are: For global settings: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers For per user settings: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers Further information greatly appriciated
  4. Thanks, but the problem is fixed now. Hey X-Setup updated?! ... (goes to look for a download link)

    Tyrian Demo 2.0

According to the compatibility listing on the main page, Tyrian works under Windows 2000. However when i try and run it, it exits to the command prompt with: Runtime error 200 at 0006:301A. I've tried the usual VDMsound & CLI2NOP but to no effect
  6. I have 4 PCs at home set up as follows: PC running XP Home (parent's one used for vid editing) PC running XP Pro (mine used for everything under the sun). PC running NT 4 Wks (used for backing up files and as a print server). All the above machines are connected via a switched hub, and MS File/Print sharing is used via IPX. The 4th PC is running 2k pro and is in my brother's room (we don't have a cable long enough to connect it to the other 3 PCs). All machines currently use a dial up modem to connect to the net individually... but now ADSL is avaliable in our area, FINALLY! Now with broadband comes a problem as there are only 2 ways of using it: 1. We use the server to share out the net connection to the other computers (goodness knows what we do about my brother's PC.. but I'm working on it). 2. Each PC has an individual ADSL modem. Option one isn't even concivable really as the 'server' in question is an ancient Cyrix based job with only 40mb of RAM. (so upgrading to a later version of Windows is out of the question). NT based OSes are not secure enough in my opinion to be used for internet connection sharing (besides NT4 is not even supported anymore). Another option would be to use Linux or some varient for the task. However since I've never used Linux in my life before this isn't really an option for the immediate future (I am snowed under with work atm and their are no Linux gurus in the area, this really isn't something I can learn remotely). So option 2 seems the only solution (expensive I know!) with each user being left to look after the security of their own machine. The other advantage of course is energy conservation, since we don't need a machine turned on all the time for net access. How have other people here approached the problem?

Sharing broadband on multiple NT/2k/XP PCs

I intend to use a router But I wasn't sure where the router makes the need for netbios redundant... or solves the problem of having 2 different protocols (TCP for net, IPX for lan) but only one nic.

Sharing broadband on multiple NT/2k/XP PCs

In the interests of keeping things simple according to MS knowledge base I can use an edited hosts file instead of netbios. I know where the lmhosts file is on each machine and how to edit it. What I don't know is what information is needed.

Sharing broadband on multiple NT/2k/XP PCs

Interesting. The firewall and private IP ranges would keep your printers and shares safe from prying eyes. Is Netbios still an issue? (also could net shares be done over IPX without the need for a 2nd nic?) WinMX is the application that has problems with fixed port ranges (tried everything with this one, it's a right bugger). Thanks for putting my mind slightly at peace.

Sharing broadband on multiple NT/2k/XP PCs

Ok can someone tell me the security implications of using a router (decided its the least hassle and most energy efficient way) to share out net access. But how do I solve the problem of applications that use dynamic port numbers? apk I've read the netbios article... but atm I am confused by EVERYTHING (tis the season for essay deadlines and I'm going to pieces) can someone explain (preferably WITHOUT linking to external sites) step by step: 1. What the router does. 2. How it connects to the rest of the network (physical). 3. How the machines need to be configured (services, protocols, bindings). Windows networking does not confuse me, as Duhmez says setting it up (using just about any method) is a peice of cake, it's potencial security issues that are stressing me out. Bear in mind that at the moment all my machines are: NT based, connect to eachother via a switched hub, use IPX for file and print shares, each have their own dial up connection to the net and use a software firewall. It's taken me the best part of a day to compose this, now I'm going for a very, very stiff drink.

Sharing broadband on multiple NT/2k/XP PCs

If I take the software firewall (which I use atm) approach and connect the modem to this machine and then share out the connections via XP's native ICS (to all machines bar the NT one, it doesn't need net access anyhow). That leaves me as stated with security issues. The main problem with this is the client for MS networks software. I can protect my network shares by binding file/print sharing and IPX (with is the current LAN protocol) to my current net card. However Client for MS networks needs to be binded to both the lan card (for file/print access) and the adsl adapter (for ICS). Correct me if I'm wrong (sorry its too late at night and Im REALLY not in the mood for thinking about this) but client for MS networks is still leathal without access to net shares. What can I do to protect my computers? Bearing in mine I have alot of custom shares, accounts with remote and local admin access to my machines (plus a carefully customised security policy) and it seems boardband is really going to screw all of this up! OMG what about netbios over TCP?! Please somebody help! (I'm slowly having a breakdown trying to work this all out).

Lock out local admin account on NT4

Could anyone tell me how to disable the default Administrator account that is created by NT setup plz? ie disable/delete it so that it cannot be used either locally or remotely. I've heard a reskit utility called 'passprop' will do this but only for access from remote computers. Any suggestions? ;(
  13. At present I have 3 accounts with administrator privilliges setup on my XP Pro machine. Two are manually created accounts and one is the original 'Administrator' account that is created by windows setup (but I have since renamed it). When I load the recovery console and it prompts for the administator password; which account is it refering to? I have tried all three passwords for my local administrator accounts and non will work. The only way I can gain access to the recovery console atm is by enabling the auto logon feature for it via the local security policy snap-in. Could someone help me out with this as I have a majority security issue with the setup as it stands at the moment.
  14. Can anyone help me with this annoying problem? When I try and use the customise car menu in NFSIII, I get the following error: openhandlea - OPEN FAILED ON ' nul' I haven't a clue what's caused this since I have been playing it fine for months and then one day it just appeared. I've tried doing a through clean out and re-install of the game, patched it up to health and tried running it in various compatibility modes. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas, or personal experience with this one? WinXP Pro SP1 GF3 Ti 200 (43.45 dets) DX9b
  15. Confusing one this when I click start and then run and type a letter (say 'a') it shows all the files on my computers drives / network shares / typed web urls that being with 'a'. For example: file:///A:/BBC%20Boards.txt or http://www.autism-oasis.com/g.php?... or \Auto (the name of a folder on my 2nd HDD) Is there a hidden feature in XP that I have unwittingly enabled? ;( Can anyone tell me how to turn this off?
  16. Whenever I send a message to users on MSN Messenger there is a message length restriction, which is annoying when I want to send larger replies. What is the tweak to disable this annoying feature please?
  17. Thankyou the information here looks quite technical, I will go through it thourghly when I am less tired.
  18. Yes thankyou. But I am aware of the key regarding autorun for cd-rom drives my main problem concerns content type handlers.

    Disable the pagefile?

I have a 512Mb RAM system... do i still need the use of the pagefile? Is it possible to run XP without it?
  20. I already use many sysinternals utils regmon and process explorer mainly, however these are a bit of a blunt instrument for what I tend to use them for, not ideally suited to the job. I will try some of the other links provided, thanks for the replies everyone.

Lock out local admin account on NT4

Everything made sense up untill the last sentence. Which rights and permissions do you refer to? As far as I am aware the only file/registry access rights that are assigned specifically to the 'Administrator' account by default are to the 'WINNT\Profiles\Administrator' dir, sub directories and files and to that account's profile settings in the registry. Everything else "admin-wise" is given the 'Administrators' user group. You can't delete or disable built in accounts on NT through the users console, so I'm still at a bit of a loss.
  22. I'm having a problem with updates for AVG 6.0 Free Edition. Since version 7 has been brought out, the auto update function doesn't work and users seem to have to visit the Grisoft web page manually to download and install update definitions. Also since ver 516 grisoft have introduced a download method that greatly reduces the size of the definition file, however to make use of this feature you have to have upgraded to ver 516 first. Now for the past week or so I have been unable to download the file to one of my PCs (you know you click on the download link and the thing sits there doing *nothing*). I've tried to access the download on two other 2 machines with net access but the same happens! I need to get hold of this update file somehow so I can update the computer. Does anyone have this file? Or know another way of getting hold of it? Standard download link: http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/d6032lhj.bin

Removing IE4 from NT4 ...(oh joy)

Ok I need an NT guru to help me out with this one... I needed to use daemon-tools on my NT pc but the program requires the Windows Installer and certain (though unspecified files) from IE4+ I followed the faq's advice and installed the Windows Installer (1.1), then IE4 (Standard Install, no desktop integration) then rebooted and uninstalled IE4 and its componants from Add/Remove (according to the d-tools faq the nessary files required by the d-tools installer would be left behind by the IE4 uninstall process). Too damn right! I don't know how many files have been added to my system directory (size increase of only a couple of megs not too bad) but my registry has increased from 3 to 5 megs in size. That might not sound much, but this is low RAM system, and a near double increase in registry size for componants that are supposed to have uninstalled is a bit much!! So: Does anyone here know what registry entries are added to a system as part of the IE install process? I know this is a long shot but I'm sure someone must have some idea... Also which files does D-Tools require? (so I can delete the excess junk, shouldn't be too hard to track files down it's the registry thats going to be tough to clean out!). SYSTEM: Windows NT4 Workstation SP6a (virtually clean install at this point) IE4 (Original release, came off the 95_OSR2.5 cd) 'Standard Install' 'No Desktop Integration' Daemon Tools 3.33

Removing IE4 from NT4 ...(oh joy)

Right wish me luck I'm going to have to do it by hand... entry by entry file by file.... After all they said it couldn't be done with the Windows Installer but I managed it ok... looks like a 2 day job though!
