    WinXP not detecting Ethernet Adapters?

Go into your device manager and Remove this device. You can then either install a new device or reboot and have it find it, but do not let XP choose the drivers, use the ones that came with the card.

    WinXP not detecting Ethernet Adapters?

The problem is not necessarily the sharing of IRQ's but the Memory resources assigned to each device. You can adjust this within Windows. You will want to write down the original configurations before you start. Physically moving the cards may also change the IRQ's assigned to each.

    WinXP not detecting Ethernet Adapters?

You've probably already tried it but go into the device manager and try to update the drivers for the new XP compatible card. Don't let XP search for drivers just install the ones that came with the card.

    XP DVD drive reading problem

You need to first find out if XP sees your drive. Right click on the My Computer icon. Click on Properties. Then, click on Device Manager button, choose the Hardware Tab. Click on the (+) next to CD\DVD devices. See if Windows is seeing the drive properly. When you installed XP did you clean install it or did you install it over W2K? Drivers that work for one may not work for the other and may even fool an install if it is an upgrade rather than a clean install. What kind of Video card to you have? Did it come with DVD software? You said you are using PowerDVD, are you sure that it is configured to read the DVD drive in case the drive has changed from D: to E: or something? Is this the patched version that works with XP? http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/products/product_main.jsp?ProdId=28

    DDR Ram question(s)

Choosing between SDRAM and DDR is controlled through a single switch in the bank of dip switches in the lower right corner of the board. Do remember, you cannot use both SDR and DDR at the same time.
  6. There are just so many ways that your question "is it worth it?" can be answered. -Is it worth it to you? If you want to broaden your experience with the PC by overclocking it further through new techniques, it might be worth it. What you learn could be invaluable. -Is it a significant overclock? From 1.0GHz to 1.5 is pretty significant, but as was pointed out there will be a lot of work to do in protecting the CPU from burning. And, you may still run into memory constraints at certain FSB speeds. -Is it worth it for the applications that you run? If you run tame stuff like general office applications, you probably won't notice that much of a difference. Maybe for Photoshop or graphically intensive apps, maybe, but your video card is not one that is usually the type used by gamers. -Is it worth it in light of stability? Personally, I want no surprises when I boot up the system. You'd be introducing an uncertainty that would always have to be taken into account everytime you introduced a new piece of hardware or changed out a driver. Most certainly you'd never want your cooling solution to faulter. -It is a lot to think about, and a lot of work. As several have pointed out, a new CPU is a very reasonable investment if all you really wanted is speed.

    IE 6.0 help

You can leave the forms and passwords intact. Don't push the buttons. There are three checkboxes: Web Addresses, Forms, Passwords. Just clear the check from the Web Addresses. It should behave then the way you want.

    IE 6.0 help

You probably went to Tools-Internet Options-General and clicked on the button "Clear History." What you seem to also get rid of is AutoComplete. Click on the "Content" Tab. Click on the AutoComplete Button. If you want it to not find a webpage as you are typing it in, uncheck the Web Addresses check box. If you want it to get rid of passwords and forms, you can clear them and uncheck their boxes. Sometimes you have to then shut down IE and bring it up again for it to take effect. Now if you want to really clean sweep everything - tempfiles, cookies, etc., you can use a piece of software from www.iolo.com called System Mechanic. There is also a script that will do this for free (I can't remember the name), but it will have to perform this task with a reboot since these have to be deleted under "Dos". When you do this know that some webpages do place cookies on your machine to enable you not to have to type login's and these will disappear. Hope this helps.

Can you delete attatchements in Outlook Express?

Found this. Very involved workaround: http://www.mindspring.com/~oe_oh/manually_removing_file_attachmen.htm

Can you delete attatchements in Outlook Express?

Misundertood. The messages are stored in a dbx file. C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\(Registry Key)\Microsoft\Outlook Express\*.dbx. I had understood that attachments much like memo fields in most databases were stored separately as temp files. You would think that you could take out the pointer to the temp without losing the message to the database. Have just never seen this function within Outlook. Will look around.

    DDR Memory Question

You're right, clutch. Mixing them is very problematic. Further, because ECC and the quality of the material may go hand in hand, you can be opening yourself up to some serious memory errors. On the other hand, when the motherboard says it can support non-ECC memory, the next step is to get memory from those manufacturers who are noted for quality ram. "Generic" ram with the ECC specification may be an admission of a lower grade media which performs acceptably only with ECC enabled

    DDR Memory Question

ECC refers to Error checking code (actually there are several ways it is referred to but they mean the same). Rather than just checking the parity to make sure that the bits transferred are correct ECC allows for actual correction on the fly without a resend if transfer is defective. Neat feature, but it can increase latency. For some this is too high a price to pay. Actually, from what I read this circuitry was included originally not to assure truer transfer but to allow cheaper media material to have the same dependability as more expensive grade media. To do this the memory has to have an ECC circuit and the BIOS has to recognize that it can or wants to recognize ECC as the error checking protocol. The first is built into the memory module. The second (BIOS) is set by you. Some motherboards have two correction modes - Parity and ECC. If you disable Parity, it should disable ECC also. You could enable Parity and disable ECC if your BIOS allows. Anyways, disabling Parity should let you run ECC ram or non ECC ram.

Can you delete attatchements in Outlook Express?

Harry, Never thought of doing this before. Have no idea if there is some way of doing it in Outlook Express. I do know that these attachments are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\****(Folder) where **** is a combination of letters and numbers. Just as an experiment I found a particular attachment in Windows Explorer and deleted it. It did delete it; but for whatever reason, it also moved it to a different folder as long as it was attached to a message. It may have something to do with an indexing function. Interesting isn't?

tv tuner & sb live 5.1 line in probs

Understand now. Is there a cable bridge between the ATI and the GeForce? And, did you look in the hardware device manager to see if there are any conflicts? Could you also see what IRQ's are shared between the sound card, the ATI card and the GeForce or how they are shared? It's the standard operating procedure stuff.

tv tuner & sb live 5.1 line in probs

It seems that you have two video cards installed. I am presuming that the GeForce is an AGP card. My first observation is that it is not easy getting the AGP and PCI video cards to play together. Whichever one you set up in BIOS as the default will often take over after a reset, BUT sometimes the machine will default to AGP just to spite you. What I would suggest, because I am lazy, is go to your device manager and see if there are any conflicts. If there are none, Then see if the dual monitor setup is correct. See if you have two, three or four monitors and what drivers each one uses. I suspect that this is where part of the problem stems from. I thing that the ATI already support dual monitors by itself and the GeForce would make three monitors your system could support. Take out the GeForce (what a headache this is going to be). Use only the ATI card connected, see if the problem persists. If so, remove the Nvidia software and drivers. Reinstall the ATI (if you think you need to). If the problem clears up, you know that there is not a problem with the Audio. I didn't go into the Audio setup from ATI because it seemed that you went through several iterations with no success.

    Winamp cpu processing problem

Beside the version, do you have any special plug-ins going? How do you start winamp (from an icon, short-cut, or command line)? Are you playing retail CD's where winamp is going to the net to find the titles?

    System Restore Suspended ?!?

Microsoft seems to recognize this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q299904 CAUSE This behavior can occur when the following conditions are true: · A drive that is not a system drive that has System Restore enabled on it has reached less than 50 MB of free disk space. · A copy, delete, modify operation was made to a file that is monitored by System Restore on such drive. This will cause System Restore to suspend across the system. RESOLUTION To work around this behavior, use either of the following two methods: Method 1 If the drive that is running low on disk space does not need to be monitored, disable System Restore on that drive: 1. On the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab. 2. Under Drive Settings , click Available drives to select the appropriate drive. 3. Click Settings . 4. Click to select the Turn off System Restore on this drive check box. 5. Click OK , and then click OK on the System Properties dialog box. Method 2 Start the Disk Cleanup tool and free up to 200 MB of space on the drive that has caused the problem. You can also free that space by deleting unnecessary files, folders, or programs from the drive. If you have freed at least 200 MB of disk space, the status of System Restore may be displayed as "Suspended" on the System Restore user interface. This behavior is by design as System Restore, by default, waits for 15 minutes after you have freed the disk space before System Restore restarts. After you have freed up the disk space, you can start System Restore to immediately restore its monitoring function on your computer if you click Start , point to Programs , point to Accessories , click System Tools , and then click System Restore .
  22. I looked at some of the tests on the motherboard you are using. One of the peculiarities of the board was it allows the BIOS to read the SPD module on the DDR stick and allow the mainboard to set itself according to what the DDR sticks "tells" it. This feature can be disabled if timings and latency are set in Bios by the user. So, it is possible that the first time you switched processors there was enough difference in speed to throw the timing off. From Mushkin I read "you will basically NOT find 1T spec DDR unless it is a Registered DIMM." Chalk it up as a victory that you got it going. Just try to remember what you did last so you can repeat it.

    Outlook XP/Hotmail & IE

Never underestimate the power of the Dark side of Microsoft.
  24. The recognition of the hard drive and its configuration would be more a function of the bios.
  25. You're asking for guesses. Microsoft's troubleshooter says that the stop error you received was due to memory (Ram) but this, in turn is tied to a file setupdd.*. You always take this info with a grain of salt. Sometimes Windows (9X,2K,XP) itself doesn't distinguish between what is actual Ram and virtual memory at a certain level. Since you didn't talk about Ram removal or hard disk isolation but only removing accessories, let's pretend that the problem was on the hard disk the whole time. The only thing you did apparently was reinstall XP. So, two questions - had the previous installation used bootvis that you may have installed to speed up booting? When had you last defragmented the hard drive? Reinstalling XP tends to defrag the hard drive and does create a fresh pagefile.sys with no surprises in it. This is my first guess. It is possible that the pagefile.sys contained something that didn't check out with the new processor or that some scratch file Windows may use as a shortcut registered an inconsistency. Some Anti-virus programs act through registry commands at the level of booting. It is possible that the change in processor was perceived as viral like but registered as a Stop error. Second guess.
