    sims 2. error

    1) I read your other thread and made some suggestions. As I recall you found the problem by jumpering the CD properly. 2) InCD4 generally requires you to use a special CD that is erasable. Write once CD's don't usually work with it. 3) You called this a gremlin, which means it can be any number of things that are a problem. So, we can look at the possibilities. You think that it might be the video card. It is an nVidia board using an ATI card. It is certainly possible there could be an internal conflict because the companies are competitors, but probably not. However, you are using Microsoft drivers for the ATI card, so using the proper ATI drivers might correct something. I have read that the nForce ATA driver is problematic. I have seen that some find the latest driver from nVidia to correct the ATA problem. In more a radical some have uninstalled the nVidia driver and allowed Microsoft to install its Adaptec version. Before you do any of these you will want to go into your device manager and see if the drives are being recognized properly and you will want to see if they have DMA or PIO support. Throughput is better with DMA support. Off the wall - some spyware and anti-virus programs can interfere as do several type of firewalls with certain games.

    LPT1 and Comm ports

Most laptops have USB ports so have you thought of using a USB to serial adaptor? This page might give you an idea how it could be done: http://www.cropscan.com/SerialUSB.html

    window installer problems

There are times when you install something and then back out of the setup. Occassionally, this install is placed in the win.ini file in your \Windows folder. Sometimes, these things are also found in your startup folder.

Gigabyte board. wont pick up 2 cd roms ..HELP

Without knowing the exact specifics, your IDE 1 primary is genrally reserved for your hard drive as the Master. You can place a CD Rom on IDE 1 only as a slave. You would want to make sure that the CD Rom is jumpered accordingly. You have to be careful to read the specs of the CD Rom as some only want to work as Master. The second CD Rom you can put in IDE 2. If there is no other device , this can be jumpered as Master. You must also look at the DMA and PIO support for each device.

    Error 1655 while partitioning

Justbill, I used Winternals ERD commander back in April 2005. I booted from the CD. I went into BIOS and had it to default to the CD as the first drive to boot from. I do not recall having to input a license key. Microsoft has since acquired Winternals so they may have added this bit to make sure that this was not a pirated XP version. If that is so, you would want to put into the licence key the number that is found in your XP CD case. Actually, after it came up, there were a number of Menu's on the left side of the screen. I worked my way through them. Since XP was the only operating system loaded on that computer, it had no trouble finding the C:\ drive.

    Error 1655 while partitioning

As I said, I used a machine with the XP operating system. When you unzip the ERD Commander, it places an iso into a subdirectory of your choice on the hard drive. Then, using Nero, I burned the iso to a CD. The CD was bootable. I took the CD to the damaged computer and booted from the CD. When the CD comes up there are a number of tools from the menu that you can use. For the most part, however, just like Windows Explorer, I could see the hard drive and could transfer the data from the damaged disk via the network to several other computers. After this, I went through a group of tools provided to see where the hard disk was damaged.

Norton Internet Security 2006 wiped out my files!

I found these in googling for a solution. Please be cautious in implementing any of them. Because you own the product you can get into their support board. You might want to try that first. My guess is that they have a "fix tool" precisely for this problem since you were probably not the first to experience it. Two possible solutions: 1)replace "Automatic" by "Permit All" in Personal Firewall/Programs for all programs with Automatic status and 2) (which maybe chancy) Edit of registry to change the following values: 1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDlls The Registry Key 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe' required a value change to '4' 2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ccProxy The Registry Key 'Start' required a value change to '4' NB. In order to accomplish this 2nd change it was neccesary to uncheck the 'Turn on Protection for my Symantec Product' (NIS Security Centre, Options Drop Down, General) and recheck it after changing the value. And to restore what appears to be the loss of email files, got this from Symmantec: (for an earlier version of Symmantec's email problem) To repair the problem manually 1. Start Windows Explorer. 2. Locate and delete the Extend.dat file. The default location of Extend.dat depends on your version of Windows: * In Windows XP/2000, the location is %Userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. * In Windows NT 4.0, the location is %Userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. * In Windows 98, the location is C:\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. The Extend.dat file is created again the next time that you open Outlook, and the Microsoft Exchange plug-in is installed the first time that an email message is opened. 3. Start the Registry Editor. 4. Browse to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions\ In the following steps, it is important to leave the most recent value remaining. Delete only the older value or values from previous installations. 5. In the right pane, you may see two or more values listed that are related to Norton AntiVirus or Symantec AntiVirus. Delete the older LDVP and SavCorp values. Do not delete the newest Symantec value or any other values, except the LDVP and older SavCorp values. For example, if you see all four of the values that appear in the following table and you are using Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0, then delete LDVP, delete SavCorp801, delete SAVCORP90, and leave Symantec AntiVirus alone. The following table describes the complete list of possible values and the product versions to which they correspond: Value Product version LDVP Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.x and early versions of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 SavCorp801 Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 SAVCORP90 Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 Symantec AntiVirus Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0 6. Exit the Registry Editor.

    Error 1655 while partitioning

I believe that it creates an iso on your hard drive first in a subdirectory of your choosing, then you burn that to the CD. When I used it, I did it on an XP computer and then created the CD and then took the CD to the damaged computer. I booted the damaged computer off of the CD and then was able to get to the damaged C:\. Because that computer was on a network and ERD recognized and utilized the network, I was able to backup the data to other computers before trying to fix the drive.

You might want to look at Winternals ERD Commander also: http://www.winternals.com/Products/AdministratorsPak/Default.aspx
  11. I don't have a Windows 64 system so I can't replicate what yours is doing. I can tell you that it seems to be stumbling over a font. That is a pretty old font that goes back to Win98 - usually one that deals with faxes. It may be that, that particular font is corrupt or unrecognizable to Win 64.
  12. Consult this thread: http://www2.ntcompatible.com/Game_Elements_Wireless_Controller_GGE917_t33493.html The problem is more probably a function of USB than anything else. Nonetheless, this thread does give a phone number and at least one guy by putting an extra USB set was able to get it running.

Problem with Starcraft on Windows XP

Sci2000luke, computers are not like cars where you can strap on a piece of equipment for a standard make and have it perform similarly in every case. To help you, you should list your motherboard, processor type, amount of memory (RAM), type of video card, etc. As a rule of thumb (which means a guess) when you describe your problem in terms of time until the game crashes (instead of a specific screen) there are two factors: 1) heat and 2) memory. Excessive heat affects your processor and your video card. Either of which can seize up or attempt to throttle down and fail. Memory deals with both the amount of memory you have available or to a memory leak where a program will not release or renew its memory after a point and makes it unavailable to the system causing the computer to freeze or interfering with another program wanting to use a particular address and is excluded. Patches for games attempt to address the most common failures to games or improve their efficiency. Again, not all patches fix every system since the each system is not similarly configured in each detail. If you can be a little more detailed in your description of your computer, sometimes this helps.

The standard answer from Symmantec is to run CHKDSK /F after this error. You might also want to eliminate a lot of the *.tmp and *.bak files that are liberally distributed on your disk. And, finally, you might want to defragment the disk. Then, run Partition Magic again.

    IPX protocol

Sorry, I was in such a hurry this morning when I read this. Didn't realize you were referring to Vista. My mistake. Found this from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windows...e.mspx?mfr=true Hardly helpful. You are probably a little ahead of the curve. Novell's board: http://www.novell.com/products/clients/ does not yet list a client for Vista. Novell will generally only come out with a client weeks or even months after an OS is released and Vista is still a work in progress, so if there is going to be support for IPX (and Wilhelmus is usually spot on when it comes to these things) this may be never as Wilhelmus believes, or many moons into 2007.
  16. What is probably going on is a conflict of hardware drivers rather than needing more drivers. Depending on whether you had another video card installed or you were using onboard video, the first step normally is to go into Windows Control Panel and Software Add/Remove and take out the video drivers for the old video. If you have onboard video, then you go into BIOS and deactivate the onboard video. If you have a physically detachable card separate from the motherboard, you don't go into the BIOS, you pull the old card out and install the new card. Given that you installed it correctly, you could use driver cleaner: http://www.drivercleaner.net/ and have it clean out all traces of your video drivers, then reinstall the drivers for your new card from the CD provided.

    IPX protocol

Don't have a lot of time to look at this. Here are two Google references: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814987/ http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm
  18. The more information you give about your computer the better. AND, the more you tell us what you did to install the card the better. Finally, it is always helpful to know the OS you are using. In general, shutdown and bootup problems are generally driver related. When you go to shutdown, if a driver won't release from memory, the shutdown stalls. When that happens and you force it to shutdown, Windows does not write out its configuration properly and on reboot, has to reconstruct and retest the configuration. Did this machine have onboard video before? Did you disable the onboard video in BIOS? OR, did it have a PCIe card and what was it? You could boot your computer into safe mode and not have many of the drivers reload, right click on the My Computer icon, choose Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager button and see if there is any "!" in front of devices installed on your computer. Click on the "+" next to Video to see what card Windows sees. Anyway, the more info you can give the easier it will be to help you get the right drivers to work with your system.

    Gigabyte Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT

The 6600 GT comes in two flavors - PCIe and AGP. Depending on the age of your computer, if this is the PCIe version and you have an older computer (but not ancient computer), you could swap it for the AGP version. If your computer is ancient and does not have an AGP slot, swap it for an nVidia 5500 PCI. In other words, you can't add a slot to accomodate the card. You would have to swap out the motherboard completely.

    Video problems in United Offensive

More often than not when the video or sound begins to get choppy, it is a hardware related issue coupled with heat. While this particular game may run on a relatively lowly appointed machine, most of these games tax the processor and the video card so heat becomes a factor after a while. What is the hardware you are using and what video card do you have installed?
  21. Yes, it is very puzzling. I am presuming that you are not using any type of firewall, even the one that comes with XP. I have seen this happen when an ethernet card goes bad or is not seated properly, but since you've connected through a USB port that would seem to rule that out. After booting up your computer, bring up a command prompt and type ipconfig without any parameters at the DOS prompt. This should give you the address it has acquired from your ISP through your modem. Then, type ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew. If it times out, but the modem light shows a connection, my guess is that you have something amiss with the ethernet card. If it does give you an address type something like ping www.google.com and see how long it takes and if there is any packet losses. If there are packet losses, your signal to the modem is bad. Some folks change the windows registry parameters to speed up their machine. Some games played online at one time did this. There are tools on dslreports that can set the parameters back to their windows default and/or modify them. Without knowing a lot of specifics, I have thrown out some suggestions, most of which you've probably tried. But, keep coming back to let us know what you've tried and what the outcome was.

    winmyy32.dll virus! help please

One suggestion given after googling: "Download the trial version of Ewido Anti-spyware from http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and save that file to your desktop. When the trial period expires, it becomes freeware with reduced functions but still worth keeping. * Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program. * Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files. * On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link. * Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. * Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab. * Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine" * Under "Reports" * Select "Automatically generate report after every scan" * Un-Select "Only if threats were found" Close Ewido Anti-Spyware, DO NOT run a scan yet. Do that later in Safe Mode. * Reboot your computer into Safe Mode now. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while Ewido is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process: * Launch Ewido Anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop. * Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan". * Ewido will now begin the scanning process. Be patient this may take a little time. Once the scan is complete do the following: * If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions" * Next select the "Reports" icon at the top. * Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important). * Close Ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.
  23. It would be helpful to know how you are trying to connect your PC to the internet. If you are using broadband, are you going through an ethernet port or a USB port? Are you connecting directly through the modem or are you using a router? Generally, when you are connecting through an ethernet card to the internet hooked directly through either a modem or a router, you will want to make sure that your ethernet card is being recognized. Right click on My Computer, click on Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager button and then check the ethernet device to see that it is recognized. Finally, if you are using XP you may have a winsock corruption. Use Google and find Winsockfix.exe or WinsockXPfix.exe. Run one of them, reboot and see if you can make your connection - of course this is all premised on the assumption you are using a broadband modem.

    Cable Connection Problem???

As to IE6 "stalling" - sometimes it is the browser, but, more often than not, the number of hops your connection has to make and the speed of the website's server are bigger factors. On the other side of the equation, since you used some of DSLnuts registry enhancements, one of the tricks for faster deployment is to suspend error checking per packet sent, which a high percentage of times on broadband, does speed up download times. But, if the error check with the larger packet size does not "compute", there can be a noticeable delay. Glad you were able to get your system to something you found more satisfactory.

    Cable Connection Problem???

This looks like a duplicate post. It is not a good idea to have two different firewalls running. Having said that, refer to the post "network" to see what to do.
