    task schedule backup on w2k

Try the link I gave. Most of these either use scheduler or have their own internal process. The difficulty with backing up to CD's is "what do you do when your data spans more than one?"

    False Install @ Start Up

Not sure that this will cure it: Click the Start button, point to Settings , and click Control Panel . Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Click to select Microsoft Office 2000 , and click Add/Remove . Click Repair Office . It may want you to reinstall Office, in that case you should Select Reinstall Office , and click Finish . Hope this helps

Any good *.DOC to *.PDF converters?

Why stop with converting Word docs? Look into Gobeproductive. For $75.00 you get the word processor, spreadsheet, and graphics package all of which can convert MS Office documents and save them as pdf files. Read the site licence. Incredible what they permit. www.gobe.com . I don't work for these folks. You can't beat the price for what it does.

    DDR Memory Question

While DDR memory works a little differently than SDram in that it does things that are not strictly on a clock cycle, the same kind of shorthand is used. What these numbers refer to is the delay in filling the memory block with data. This is often called CAS latency. Think of the memory as a big table with columns and rows that have to be filled in so there has to be time between the rows being filled in (RAS) and the columns being filled in (CAS), the time to switch between memory banks, and the time to prepare for output. What do the numbers actually mean? They are shorthand for the speed of the memory. The lower the CAS latency, the faster the memory. CL2 is faster than CL2.5 (your memory) which is faster than CL3. The other numbers are probably the RAS to CAS Delay and the RAS precharge. Given I've only seen the PC-2700 at 2.5, you have some very fast memory. Depending on the Bios of your motherboard you can make a number of adjustments to run, for example, CL3,3,3 ram at CL2,2,2. Some motherboards can make as many as four or five adjustments. This is a kind of overclocking without messing with the FSB. Hope this helps.

    Voodoo3 & Office 2000 In Win2k

If it does this with the font menu alone, then you may have some fonts that are not exactly spec. If you have Adobe fonts installed, Windows 2000 does not support PostScript1. Presuming this does this only with the font menu, you could try moving some of the fonts to a different directory and then bringing them back to try to isolate the ones that may be crashing your system. Your fonts are found in C:\winnt\fonts

    comp won't read cd-rws and cd-rs..

If you have the original CD's for the games, have you put them in your DVD drive to see if they will play? If they do, it may be a problem in the way the CD rom burner is making the disks and not your DVD.

To Add this value, in the left pane on the word Explorer right click. A menu will appear to the right, move your cursor over New and choose DWORD value. It will create a new value in the right panel. Type NoCDBurning (keep the capitals). Set the value to 1. Do this for both HKey_local_user and Hkey_local_machine. Remember to back up your registry before doing this.
  9. Right Click Start Button. Left Click Explore all Users. In the left side panel under the directory tree Start, Click on Programs - The icons for Word, Excel, etc. will be found.

    comp won't read cd-rws and cd-rs..

I have two quick observations, but will get back later. You are using a DVD drive apparently. Some DVD-RAM may not be capable of reading a CD-R/RW disk, depending on recording conditions. Were these games subject to a copy protection scheme originally since some schemes "hide" a CD's table of contents so your CD-ROM drive can't read it? Why don't you give the specifics of the drive - make manufacturer, etc.

    Xp Too Slow

You're probably right, prost8, but given the configuration I read about on IBM's webpage, I would say that it is a multiple of factors - this P4 coupled with SDram is going to run slow. This isn't the 13Micron, this is the older version. The video cards are "last generation" so they are going to hold it back. It has too little memory without a lot of disk caching, which, of course, where the importance of UltraDma kicks in. Heaven knows how many applications are fired up at bootup, but if Office or Lotus is one of them, there is going to be a plethora of tasks running in the background. We need a lot more information to help.

It may be that the game CD's are in the UDF format. You will need a UDF reader program. Install a UDF reader and see if that lets your machine read the drive. UDF readers are usually free and can be found at several places on the net.

    task schedule backup on w2k

As far as I know W2K backup supports backing up to tapes. What you might want to consider if you are backing up to CD's is any one of several shareware products. They range from $10 to $70. Most use Adaptec Direct CD. This webaddress is one place to look for these kinds of products: http://www.majorgeeks.com/showfiles.php?cat=3. Partition Magic also offers a backup program to CD's.
  14. While I know this thread is dealing with programs that enhance performance through tweaking, and TweakUI, is helpful, the best tweaking is keeping the system clean from all the clutter, broken shortcuts, and registry trash left behind either from installing or uninstalling, deleting and moving of files. System Mechanic maintains a machine very well: http://www.iolo.com/ . I know this is not a tweaking program in the strict sense, but good maintenance goes a long way in keeping a system "tweaked".

    Xp Too Slow

Clearly, Admiral, you know your way around that old BX box of yours, but I bet you if you put in a Powerleap processor package (upping your CPU to 1Gig) and stuffed another 512Mg of ram in your system, you'd never go back. But, it isn't just a question of starting up a system, it is the amount of resources that a system has to contend with, track, and cache, that bring a machine to it knees. Working with large databases and having to build reports and then run those reports with the fonts, variables, calculated fields, exception/inclusion clauses and multiple sorts in headers, subheaders, and footers would quickly convince you that more memory and doing without the eye candy is a great trade off for faster results. As I said, you obviously know your computer, and you keep it within the boundaries you've set for it, but aren't you tempted just a little, to put a bigger sail on that little beast?
  16. Right Click on the Start button, left click on Open. Your Programs folder will appear. Double click on it. This will bring up all the folders listed under Programs. For every new general listing, create a new folder with the name you wish to give it. If you want to transfer programs just double click on the folder that contains them and right click and drag and drop them into their new folder and select move.

If in case the above is not a tab from your properties, this is the registry hack: User Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\Explorer] SystemKey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Policies\Explorer] Value Name: NoCDBurning Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value Data: (0 = Allow CDR, 1 = Disable CDR)

    Remove Office XP Splash Screens?

Have three more but you may wish to reconsider using two of them since they involve "hacking" the registry: Access is a kind of workaround - create a 1x1-pixel BMP file and save it in your database directory. Name it as the name of your database's filename, e.g. if your database is named DATABASE.MDB, name your bitmap file DATABASE.BMP. Not the most elegant solution. Outlook Express: Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Identities For OE 5 go below this to {ABE2B8A0-C02D-11D3-867B-948FF355BD32} \Software \ Microsoft \ Outlook Express \ 5.0 Add a DWORD NoSplash Give it a value of 1 IE5.0 and higher: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Infodelivery\Restrictions Add a DWORD called NoSplash Set the value to 1

    Remove Office XP Splash Screens?

I've seen scripts that do this. But, try these since they are less invasive first: To remove the splash screen from Word 2000 SR-1 or SR-1a, create a new shortcut and add " /q" (<space>/q) to the end of the command line. If you don't have SR-1 or SR-1a, download the service pack at http//office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/o2ksr1ddl.aspx For Excel 97 & 00 rightclick your Excel shortcut, click Properties & add ' /e' onto the end of the entry in 'target' for Powerpoint 97/2000, use this start command ("Powerpoint.exe" /splash)"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\powerpnt.exe" /splash

what processes are required in W2K taskmanager?

In re-reading your post, since you are getting errors (and I doubt it comes from the background tasks. Right click on your My Computer icon, choose properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager button, the click on the + next to IDE ATA/ATPI controllers, right click on Secondary controllers (I am presuming this is how you installed it), choose properties and click on Advanced Tab. See if DMA is given your new device.

    Clipboard Viewer Missing

It should be located in C:\winnt\system32\clipbrd.exe . You can use Windows Explorer to manuever to it or just ask it to find it. Then, right click on the file and drag it to the desktop and copy it there. If your Windows Explorer is not set to find hidden files, double click on My Computer. Double click on C:\ then winnt folder. You may have to press the Show files tag at the left. Then, double click on the system32 folder (again clicking on the show files message) and then find clipbrd.exe. Right click, drag to desktop or quickstart bar and copy here.

what processes are required in W2K taskmanager?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services would tell you what services are running. I doubt the problem is those services. HP is notorious for poor software and of including SCSI devices in their software where they are not needed.
