It's been a long time since I dual booted. Doesn't it use Dos4gw? (shudder...)

"Explorer randomly locking media files - happens with mp3, avi, anything really, only way to delete/rename/move the files that get locked is to kill explorer and use the command window Simple File Sharing and other stupid things enabled by default" I totally second that opinion/insight. Msft (being only one company) solves a number of things, and invokes a whole new slew of Mickey Mouse games that they may actually enjoy playing in Richmond, but *NO ONE* else in the world does. That's the one area where Linux shines. Since it's reviewed by (literally) 10,000,000 college kids the world over, those annoying little problems get whacked with a PR-24. But, since they get paid for each operating system that someone upgrades to, it's definately in their best interest to release buggy software. I'm tired of treating symptoms. I want to nuke the disease...

XP page file: Should I set it permanently?
ejsmith replied to markjs's topic in Customization & Tweaking
The diskeeper 'boot time' can defrag the MFT and page files. And yes, you should definately defrag before flipping back on the page file. NT5.1 finally tries to make it a lump sum, but sometimes there's a few K that's spread. Hence, defrag it. -
XP page file: Should I set it permanently?
ejsmith replied to markjs's topic in Customization & Tweaking
You gave Linux a 2 gig swap?!?! That's like using a small 75mm howitzer to chop down a tree... But yeah, msft pages stuff out to the swap like it's the 1950's and punch cards are still used. Like the 'Unlimited' Dll cache, web pages in IE cache, and Office executables. You could have 15.5 terabytes of bubble memory, and msft would still use a swap file like it was the only ram that was in your machine. Set the page file up to a permanent amt., and defrag it. -
You're limited to two options on this one. a. D/L a save game that occurs just after the races and deal with the names/inventory. b. Dual boot with Me/98, and drill down those nasty jockeys. No matter which option you pick, please start a thread somewhere that actually explains the storyline. The whole 'use the chi...stretch out your feelings...the chi will always be with you...the chi can have a strong influence on the weak minded' really throws me for a loop.

Anyone else using XP that can't seem to get rid of the read-only attrib on files? I uncheck it, hit apply, and open up the properties again, and it's still there. Even the command line 'attrib -r-a-s-h *.* /s' doesn't work. I hate it when msft keeps asking me 'are you sure you actually want to move this file, even though it's against the church/state/our policy?'. Someone give me a gun. I'll troubleshoot it...

Sounds like when I had the 23.11 drivers loaded. To heck with the nifty little windows; Bsod is the msft logo now. "What building do you want to crash into today?"

Anyone actually have a character Editor that works with Diab
ejsmith replied to pr-man's topic in Games
There were a whole slew of good ones for D2 1.01 and 1.02. After that, it went downhill. Like after Diablo 1.04. Jamella's downloads don't work, so it looks like a 'scour-the-net' deal. Check out http://www.geocities.com/pbdo2/d2xeditors.html. I've not tried any of them, but it looks to be a working deal. -
If you do a read check with hdtach, you'll see the speed at the beginning of the media (outer track) is considerably faster than the inside. My 120gxp gets 48meg/sec on the outer, and 22meg/sec on the inner. So, if you limit all your system files to the outer tracks, there's no way a defragger or windows update can ever move them to the inner tracks. Personally, I give Win NT5.1 no more than 3gig (usually under), and Winme not more than 2.5gig.

If you have broadband you should do this.
ejsmith replied to akoum's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Or, better yet: When you install the OS, chuck it from the network configuration selections right off the bat. Along with client for msft networks, and those 2 other Mickey Mouse jobs that msft wants you to install. It's amazing just how much faster NT is over 98/Me when you get rid of all the completely worthless stuff. Actually, when something has a negative worth, it's no longer worthless. My bad. -
Forcing XP to fill RAM before using Swap File?
ejsmith replied to isochar's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I only have 256meg, and when I'm running at full multitask, I can get it down to under 7meg free physical. I've actually seen it down to 1meg. I don't know what to tell you. Xteq xsetup is the only thing I use, and I flip on all kinds of options. -
Yeah, I integrated sp1 into Office 2002, but it jumped the size of it up to 900meg. WTF?!
-
Um. (This space has been intentionally left blank) What kind of system are you using? And what kind of drivers?
-
I've been using 7.0 for a while now, and it does just fine. I think Speeddisk does a little better but takes longer and won't do a boot time defrag.
-
I've not tried RT2 on XP yet, but it rokked under Win2k sp2. Are you sure you have a *retail* (wink, wink) version?
-
bottleneck: I use your method, but I use Xsetup to shut off the wfp first. Then after i've copied whatever I want (or deleted the bejesus out of) I flip the wfp back on. Granted, it's a couple of reboots, but it saves a lot of headaches...

"I am getting pretty annoyed with this roll-bar in Win XP " AMEN, BROTHER!!! Tell it like it is. I would drop a load of gasoline on it, light a match, and walk away for a good 8 weeks while that little jewel glows a firey red. Oh. Forgot we were talking about the roll-bar...

Is there a way (to point middle finger to MS)and do this???
ejsmith replied to enio's topic in Software
Yes. You have to turn down your 'security' settings under IE, and go to their web site. Go under 'Downloads'. Select your operating system, and then sort by name (date doesn't work for me. It pulls up a blank list.) It's helpful to run the 'update' deal first, and write down all the q********* references first. That way you get the updates for XP, IE, Virtual Machine, UPnP, and everything else that may or may not really have anything to do with the operating system. You can just type in the q* references, or at least match them up in the menu. Save them to disk. But to warn you ahead of time, don't try just running all the hotfixes at the same time. You have to reboot in between each one, or run qchain along with the /z option on the hotfixes. -
If in doubt (with msft), crash and install. Repartitioning is the best way, but a quick format will do if you're pressed for time.

What crucial ad? And I see your pretty red 'x', and totally agree with you. Why waste cpu cycles/memory on third party fixes when everything is there already? The first thing I do when I load windows is turn off active scripting and java. Download files and fonts, and the 'pass through' domain and frames are the only things on. Everything else is chucked. Then I manually add a few 'trusted' sites at medium, and msft at medium-low. I also load Netscape 4.79. So if I hit a site that absolutely needs java, I'm not going to spend the time to add it to the trusted zone. I just cut-n-paste the url to netscape. The only question I have is what browser are you using? IE 5.5asp is the best configuration I think, but 6.0 will disable everything too. I like to be able to setup cookie configs for each zone, rather than having to add a site to TWO different lists. GD msft...

Sounds like a bad glitch. I'd backup data before the counter hits 1, much less 0. There might be a registry entry that you can change (say, '1' to '0') that will make it an 'unregistered' computer. You might give msft a call this time, instead of using the modem. There's always *something*.

Repartition, Format, Install. Fat32 is cranky. But then again, so is windows....
