    RAM

Make sure 512MB sticks are supported if you are going down that road. Also when buying the memory MAKE SURE you ask them if it'll work at PC-100. If they say it does and it doesn't you are covered PC-133 memory should be backwards compatible. I run PC-133 at PC-100 in one of my PCs

    Adsl

I don't know if there's a limit on the length of the phone line or not. But if there is, you can always put the modem further away from the PC and use a longer ethernet cable.

  7. I think that you need to press F6 when it says so and load your Serial ATA driver off the supplied disk.

    Admin Share Weirdness

Sometimes I've encountered this weirdness when trying to connect to an admin share. When it prompts for the User name and password, the username field is ghosted out and thus stuck as guest. Does anyone know why this happens and/or how to fix it?

    Admin Share Weirdness

I'll have a look into that solution. When I searched google groups, the problem seems to occur for others to without a known solution. I'll post my results here.

    Admin Share Weirdness

It happens on machines with or without the Guest account enabled. I'm totally stumped on what causes it or how to fix it.

Move Windows XP to new hardware?

I strongly recommend against trying to transfer Windows installations across systems or major hardware changes. It always gets messy and there is usually a performance hit too. If you don't want to format the drive, you can always load the recovery console and rename the Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings folders. Also you can rename boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com. After this you can install a new copy of Windows and preserve the drives contents.
  12. Quote: Oh and BTW Winamp and WMP9 use the EXACT same directsound codec, so there is no way WA or WMP9 can sound different. Unless for some reason direct sound is polled diffferently from app to app. WinAMP uses it's own library for MP3 decoding.

9700 PRO - screwed? help please

Most Dells have an on site warrenty. They should replace the Radeon on the spot. Just ring them and tell them the problem and u'll have a new Radeon P.S. That thing about the memory chip being damaged, those artifacts seem to indictate a memory problem.

Looks to me like you're going to have to RMA the card.

    Intel to VIA

Well I may be wrong there but I'm certain that not doing a fresh install doesn't bring the fullt benefit of new hardware.

    Intel to VIA

Quote: Changing a mobo and keeping the same installation is a horrible idea, period. If the chipset, AGP, and HDD drivers are different (and they usually are) then you should simply format and start over. Personally, I am surprised it didn't BSOD (although the suggestion of a "repair" indicates that it might have) at boot because of the difference in IDE drivers. Most people here are going to tell you the same thing, as they have all probably tried to rig this same exact thing at one time or another. Not reinstalling Windows after a Mainboard change is very foolish. You will not get the performence gain of the new board and/or system because there will be driver conflicts, etc. Don't be lazy, just reinstall the OS when you upgrade the board or whole system.

Intel 3.06Ghz 800Mhz FSB HyperThreaded CPU: Good read!

Wouldn't the 2 Raptors on top of each other overheat? IMHO you are better off putting one in the lower drive bays.

How to determine a missing Codec from video files

Google for a program called GSpot. It'll identify what codecs you need to play a video file and it also tells you other things about the file like wether it's complete or not.

Quote: My WD 120SE scored around 29000 on sandra, and my dual raptors score 69000, and average sustained rate of 97mb What kind of RAID controller are you running? I was under the impression there was a serious lack of decent SATA controllers. I was only aware of the Silicon Image and Intel's onboard one were true SATA controllers.
