    Dare I say....only in America??

Quote: P.S.=> It'll happen, just a matter of time... & "business cycle" turn-around time! Every other trick in the book will be pulled until then, & once they are all exhausted, then you start seeing those folks at the top having to fire some of their relatives in their "50 VP's to a company title" & that's when it will be striking home for them as well, & that's when changes will start, REAL needed ones, not tricks & illusions... Folks really in control are boards of directors & stock holders (in publicly held companies) & they lost sight I think of the old adage "Sometimes you have to spend money to make money"... apk In past, many more companies were under the control of individuals whose involvement and commitment to a company, its employees, and, the welfare of all, was a life long endeavor. Now almost all companies are under the control of stockholders, who are only concerned about the short term profit, and, to hell with the company and its workers ;(

    Will sanity prevail.....

Quote: You know, it's always nice to hear a political opinion from a country that throws tons of cash into supporting royalty when they have a parliament while they can't be bothered to infuse a large amount of resources in Ireland or simply get out. Oh, and we will always have the Falkland Islands now won't we? Personally, I think the effort should have been sunk into killing bin Laden. But, for some reason he can't be found (although I think someone in the US or NATO is holding back for some reason, because I would think we could get him). In any case, I have lived on military bases for half my life, and have been exposed to that way of life. However, I do think that it has been handled too agressively in some cases, while in others just flat poorly. So felix, what do you propose? If someone had several airliners filled with people from your country and used them to attack and kill many more of your countrymen, how do you think you and your country would deal with that? We may have gone off the deep end, but it seems that some other countries have been willing to join us... Oh, and if you live in the UK and take offence; don't. This was directed at the author of the article moreso than anyone else. Sorry, but nationality aside, John le Carré has hit the nail right on the head. What was done on 911 was horrible, but, what is being done by the bush administration is even more despicable.

    Win2k exclusive access to drive

Ok, here are the 'rules' guys. In NT, W2K, and XP, chkdsk can only be run from the OS on a volume that has been dismounted. That means that it the OS is using systems files on the volume, that, chkdsk can only be run on a reboot or from the install CD restoration console, which is basically a command line NT shell. I'm sorry that you have to reboot to perform some of the necessary maintaince, but, that is the price you pay for improved performance and stability. The NT based systems are far more protective of themselves and their volumes than the old 9X windows, and, this is overall a good thing. It gives your system far more protection and stability. Additionally, those of you who are a little smarter, should know enough to have formatted your volumes as NTFS. That's another superior feature over the old 9X.

    Looking for driver olicom networkcard

Quote: hi adamvjackson, it's a PCI NIC. I think i must replace it but if it is no need for it i want to try to keep this one. This company is out of business! Adam has it right. Get a new NIC. Anything else is just asking for grief
  7. Quote: Hi Adam, I shouldn't have, but I've already gone ahead and started writing an application to meet my needs . However since I'm doing a half-ass job I'm still interested in more complete solutions. Also freeware would be preferable. Thanks, Christian Blackburn I do that all the time with ZTree. No big deal ;-).

    Subsistute for Arcobat Reader?

Quote: Quote: Look at that reference page. It's a PITA to set up but GSview and Ghostscript will allow you to create your own pdf files. Once set up, this is very nice. You can get rid of Adobe altogether First off, you click on the shortcut in the start menu and all you get is a open window similar to wordpad with no menu bar! Useless. I clicked on a pdf document and it opened it up, but still no tool/menu bar. Still useless. I right clicked on the image; nothing again still dito! Sorry that isn't my idea of a Windows program! Told ya it was a PITA, and, not your typical windoz install. If that's beyond you then I'm afraid your stuck with the Adobe reader. pdf is, after all, a proprietary format ;(

    Subsistute for Arcobat Reader?

Quote: Quote: (...) It's a PITA to set up but GSview and Ghostscript will allow you to create your own pdf files. It wasn't that hard to set it up, not at all.. But I'd recommend MiKTeX for creating your own PDFs. PS: Get Universal PostScript Printer Driver if you want your own PSs. All I ment by that, was that it wasn't your typical windows install. I think I ended up using a HP Deskjet 1200C postscript driver which worked fine. I just set up on my new rig. there used to be a program called makepdf which provided a front end for Ghostscript. Seems that the link is no longer any good, although I still have a copy. Is that what you're using Miktex for?

    Antec PlusView1000AMG Case reviews?

Quote: Looking for a review with some good pics, thinking about dumping my lian-li case because its getting to small for me and going for one of these coz it has built in window and takes 5 case fans aswell as being nice and roomy I could only find this one: http://www.monkeyreview.com/reviews/review.php?num=214 But, if I needed more space, I'd just go with a bigger Lian-Li... Like a PC70 series tower http://www.lian-li.com/product.php?pcid=32&secid=165 These guys also have a good reputation for hardware, and, You can get almost any of their cases with a window. http://www.chieftec.com/products/Window/Window.htm

    No graphics on boot-up

Quote: If you have a video card with a flashable bios, it may have lost it's memory. Is this an old computer or a new one? The problem I'm describing is more likely to occur on older video cards like a Matrox G200 for example. It sounds like you have a new system, but one never knows. If you do have a matrox video card call them up there is a fix, but it the card will fail every 1-6 months and you'll have to boot their special floppy to get the picture back. Personally I was really, reallly disapointed with Matrox about this. They should have done a product recall, instead they created a boot floppy, just think of all the people out there will or have already gone through this problem and wasted time and money fixing it, possibly replacing the computer altogether. Cheers, Christian Strange, I have a Matrox Milentium G200 that's never given me a moments greef. Solid as a rock.

Sound Enthusiasts will like this one!

Quote: Heh, speaking of multimedia - I am waiting to be watching my brother on CNN now, as the U.S. Army is having him speak about something they are doing in his unit as they are prepping for all this madness & lunacy going on in today's political situation. Pretty cool! My bro, Lieutenant John Kowalski on national TV news! So, I am capturing it on CNN via WinTV2000 here... good thing they repeat stuff on CNN during the day, I am (edit part) now watching "Larry King LIVE" in the meantime, waiting on doing this capture! APK P.S.=> I figured they'd think fairly highly of him, he is a VERY intelligent & ultra hardworking guy, tough as hell too... I'm proud of him! Heh... will wonders NEVER cease, so I must watch & catch it in an .AVI motion file! apk May our country not misuse him!

    lock tasbar in win2000

Quote: Is there a way to lock the taskbar in win2000 like in WinXP. I installed IE 6.0 SP1 using service pack 3. Anyone know of a way? Try: http://is-it-true.org/nt/registry/rtips325.shtml This 'should' work on any NT/W2K/XP, as the taskbar is tied to IE functions and not persay the OS. Just tried it on W2K, and, it works as advertised.

Zone Alarm and ICMP under W2KS

Quote: Hi, Whenever I try to send a mail through my ISP (DSL), I get a message from ZA "The firewall has blocked access to your computer (ICMP Unreachable) from 192.168.1.1.". I could not figure out what is happening here. Could someone help me please? TIA. Goto ZoneAlarm security/ settings/ advanced Add the 192.168.1.1 address I think that will cure it. It is ZoneAlarm that is doing the blocking.

Need new Micro ATX mobo ??????????? thoughts

Quote: Hey all well, my vaio is pi**ing me off so i am gonna get a new mobo / mem for it. since it comes in a pretty sony case i want to keep it, so it has to be Micro ATX. i would prefer pc2100 or higher support, or rambus. and also has to have an agp for my g4 4600. i have checked out asus and they only have one board i like, but want to know if i got more options.... Asus board: P4B533-M http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=p4b533-m any recommendations? if i can not find a good one i will jst get a new case / power supply and get an ATX board. - just that sony has the front curved so the cdrom and dvd bunrer have curved face plates on them. The Micro part is a real problem, not too much choice, but, I ran across this: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/directron/81gmk.html Which looks quite tasty Gigabyte is a good name. Incidently, I also have the Asus P4b533-E and I think it's great, but, the gigabyte board has almost the same features in a micro form factor.

Long filenames and CD burning probs!

Quote: Try switching to Joliet. I usually just rar my files and then burn to CD. Joliet's a good idea, and zipping or rar is also good, but, you got to have the disk space to do it, or, a program that will directly compress and burn. Not always possible. If anyone is interested in the Joliet spec, it's here: http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/jolspec.html

    Windows Media Player 9.......

Quote: Quote: WMP9 is a great steap up from 7.1. Even compared to MPXP, 9 is a great improvement. Unfortuneatly not all the features are available on 98/ME/2k but I'd still upgrade providing your system is faster than 500mhz. http://www.winsupersite.com have a list of what new features it has and the XP only ones too. I highly recommend Windows Media Player 9 to anyone. Sounds good... is it downloadeable (& more importantly, is it a FINAL build or beta)?? * Thanks for info. & if possible, URL for d/l... APK Let Media Player 9 users enjoy, but, I'm 'most' suspicious of the media programs by MS. Those guys manage to screw up their own stuff better than anyone else can. I had so many problems with Media Player that, a long time ago, I just started finding 'other' solutions. Right now I use ZoomPlayer for most of the media. I think I have Media Player 6.x, but, it really doesn't have any associations. Maybe I should give Media Player another chance....eehh... maybe not. ;(

    Optical mouse light stays on

Quote: TheSam, Which OS are you using? I think whether or not the light stays on depends on the OS (but don't quote me on that!). For a brief while I had a MS Wheelmouse Optical, using it with Win98. The ***** light stayed on and was really annoying. I went back to using a standard MS wheelmouse. More recently, I decided I really needed an optical mouse and, egged on by various contacts of mine saying that I'd have no trouble with the built-in light with the OS I now use (Win2K), I took the plunge and got myself a new corded Optical Blue Mouse. Its light does indeed go out! Furthermore, this Blue mouse is so much better, much lighter and faster to use. So, Win98 might be the culprit. Whatever, if you upgrade to a better mouse - the latest Microsoft range are as good, if not better, than Logitech's, in my view - I don't think you'll have that problem. I notice that Thesam, and, Tomay Have ABIT MB's. I think that that is much more likely to be the issue. If the system is really shut down, whether by 98 or W2K, shouldn't make a difference, the power to the port should be off. Maybe some MB designs leave the power on? ;( It may be anoying, but, I'm pretty sure it really doesn't do any harm. Also, I still think that the Logitech mice are better than the MS ones... certainly more durable.

    PS/2 vs USB mouse detection

Quote: I think I have that keyboard prob too, I have button on the top-left of the board that has an f on it, when clicked an LED comes on and you can use your f1-f12 key's. LED off, and you cant. its really dumb Yup, that's the one. Just what you don't need to mess with on a new install. Needless to say that's now in my pile of 'unused hardware'. ;(

    PS/2 vs USB mouse detection

Quote: I've recently gotten a new Logitech MX700 mouse (cordless/optical). When I plug it in as a USB mouse, using latest the Logitech software, it recognizes the mouse correctly. However, when I use this same mouse as a ps/2 mouse it only recognizes it as a plain ps/2 mouse and there doesn't seem to be any way that I can change the drivers to show the correct one. Since I use a PS/2 KVM switch box to go between 3 different computers, I need to use PS/2. Two of the machines are XP and one is Linux. Any ideas as to what's going on here? Thanks. Sam Well, I can't be absolutely sure, but Logitech has been doing some really screwed up things with their products. ;( I got a keyboard about a month ago and proceeded to install W2K. In the install you're asked to press F8, but, the darn thing is so software driven that the F8 key isn't recognized. What genius designed that one? ;( Even my wheel mouse has more functions on usb than on ps/2. I believe that this is an effort on Logitech's part to move everyone over to usb, and, to continue to support 'only' basic ps/2 protocol.
