    New hard disc won't boot

Did you try to update the bios?
  3. The best way is to search the manufacturers page for a cpu compatibility list. http://www.asus.com.tw/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx Maybe the chipset supports a certain cpu but it doesn't mean that a mobo with this chipset will support it. BTW socket 7 comes in different flavors. You have to look at the chipset. i430vx, mvp3 (suports amdk6 processors)...
  4. If you're using two sticks of ram in first and third slot it runs in dual channel mode which is aprox 2x faster.

    win2000 bootable

The windows 2000 cd is bootable, just boot from the cd and then select recovery console.
  6. It's been a while since I installed my mobo and I use 44 version drivers. I could remember that there was a catch. When you unzip the drivers go to the folder called \english in there you'll find a file demo32.exe and select the file english.dbd and click on open. You'll see a nice screen called 3c2000 Installation. Choose "NIC Software" (top right) and then "Install NIC Driver" (bottom left) That's all

Write speed RAID 0 to slow

When setting up a raid0 you can set the stripe size. I think default is 16kb (not sure). Maybe this setting will have an influence. BTW when working with large files stripe size of 512 or 1024KB is recommended.

  11. You're probably running at 66fsb instrad of 100. Get cpu-z and check the processor and fsb speed. The mobo may be set to run at 300 but the processor may be running at 450. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
  12. I do it like this. After I ghost i boot from the windows cd and repair the existing installation. It works and the system is stable. Have tried it 2 times with the same installation. First it was an intel bx chipset /w celeron , then a via chipset /w a p3 and now it's a celeron 2.4 on i845. The only problem I encountered was that the system sometimes hangs when trying to hibernate. Apart from that it was rock-solid.

If you're running win 2000 or xp you can boot from the cd and go to the recovery console. There are two commands that can help fixboot and fixmbr (fix master boot record).

5.1 live sound card and drive installation problem

Did you try different drivers or download from creative?

Intermittent Windows boots (Linux boots just fine).

Run memtest to see if you have memory errors. IMHO Linux is less sensitive to most errors than windows. Then try prime95 to test stability of the system (torture test for a couple of hours). add /sos after /fastdetect in boot.ini found in your c:\ This setting lists the drivers when windows loads them (no sliding bar screen) and you will be able to see where it stops.

    ntfs to fat 32

A format would do it. Put the hdd into another computer and copy the files you want to rescue. Then format it in fat32.

Do I have to set the clockspeed?

You can find out the manufacturer from the bios id. There is a good page www.wimsbios.com look under bios numbers. or just put the bios id string into google.

    Buying new desktop for home

ATI 9600 pro or 9800 pro (don't get the SE it's a "slower ediditon") Mobo I'd recommend an abit or asus mobo based on intel 865 or 875 chipset. Intel P4C (speed depends on the money you're willing to spend). 2x512 ram running in dual channel mode. HDD Maxtor or WD 7200 8MB. You might consider a sata solution I use onboard sound on my mobo. If money is a problem get a barton XP 2500 and a nForce2 mobo.

Do I have to set the clockspeed?

Read the maual The clock speed and the multiplier are usualy controlled by jumpers on the motherboard. (I think QDI has made a jumperless socket7 board) If you don't have the manual you can usualy download it from the manufacturer. Post back if you need further help.
