A monitor that wont work properly

What os / SP are you running. Maybe you running into M$ refresh rate problem. Check out http://www.xp-refresh.net/ There you can also find a bunch of tool to fix that. Did your monitor ever run at 1024*768@85Hz.

Recover a file AFTER recycle bin is emptied

If you're using w98 the best is to shutdown or even pull the power cable (cos on shutdown win writes stuff to disk that can overwrite your deleted files) The boot from a floppy or a cd and type "lock" and answer yes. Then use undelete in your recycled directory, which is hidden. I like to use norton's unerase for dos. Got it from some old norton utilities version. When you're using ntfs partitions you can forget about this type of recovering. Does anyone know where you can find the files, when you get a word document in a mail and select open it when clicking on it. Then you do some editing and after a while you close the file and word asks you to save it and you select yes, but the mail program deletes it after the program (word) is closed. It should be in c:\windows\temp directory, but if I undeleted I couldn't find anything of use. Now I selected make backup copies in word and my computer is full of *.wbk files. 8). Any idea how to hide them? Thnx

    Power Requirement

It should if it's good power supply. There was a test of PS units posted on ntcompatible a few weeks ago (It was on a german site). I do favor intel processors and curently I have a 1.3 G celeron, 2 maxtro 40 gb, 1cdrom, 1cdrw. And I'm sure I could hook up a lot more without getting out of power. You can go to the AMD site and look up the info how much watts your processor uses, I think HDD's use around 5watts (23 spinup peak). Cdroms should be something simmilar. I'm not sure how much the Motherboard uses, but it's not that much. You should also add your gpu wattage (If you have a nice 3d one) and I doubt that your computer will use more than 200w. Two od my friens have a simmilar configuration like you, the one has 1600xp and the other 1800xp. They both got 300w psu's and no power related problems. At a party once I ran my Celeron as an mp3 player with a 100w car amp connected to the computer psu, and the computer didn't crash (Maybe it would if I tried to play quake, but didn't try it). So I think you're good with 300w.
  4. Quote: On my P4 2.26, I think 1 work unit took about 3 hours, if I remember correctly. If you use the screensaving client, be sure to turn off the graphical reporting tool, otherwise your work units will take twice as long. Also, the command line versions are supposed to be even faster, from what I've heard. How do I turn off the graphical reporting tool?
  5. Quote: I was just wondering if someone could tell me what you guys are talking about? I have no idea what units are or what crushing them is. A brief overview would be very nice. Check out http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ There you can download the utility and learn about seti@home

HELP!!! PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS XP PRO

Don't ya all get it. There isn't just one simple solution to this problems. If it solves the problem for you it doesn't mean that it will solve every problem with this error. As I posted before it can be anyhing form drivers and configuration conflicts to real faulty hardware. It can also be onboard hardware like onboard audio or onboard usb... You can try everything, but start with the easyest to do. Turn of settings in bios, than unplug hardware, than start pulling out your cards, I guess the next logical step would be changing the mobo, the processor and the ram, but when processor and ram are faulty you usually get different errors because neither of them use irq's. You can also check this out about bsod http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevie...echrep/bsod.asp

HELP!!! PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS XP PRO

If you recive this BSOD it's incompatible hardware, it could be usb, sound, modem, network... anything that uses irq's (microsoft says). [http://www.microsoft.com/ windows2000/techinfo/reskit/en/prork/prhd_exe_igcc.htm] You can also try searching for "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" in google or try searching in the posted messages. I have the same problem from time to time, but i can install without problems. I suspect it's the sound card (creative SB128PCI). Try to disable bios caching (shadowing), usb, onboard sound, modem, raid controlers..., than remove any sound, modem... cards. If you still get the BSOD try just the motherboard + processor + ram + hdd. If you still get the roblem change the MoBo. (yeah btw also try the latest bios). Good luck! I don't know but up[censored] dribers didn't help for me. You can also try sp1 _________________ Voodoo 4Ever

How can you tell from dos if a system just hibernated?

I'll take a look at a single OS system, when I get to one. Right now all my comp's a multi os. I guess I just can't without the old w98.

How can you tell from dos if a system just hibernated?

I just played with my second system which has 2 partitions C: win98 D:w2000 sp3. I hibernated, and then used a cdrom to boot into dos. (took me a while, cos I got an old scsi burner and it took a few tries to figure out that the boot sequence has to be scsi... to boot from scsi cd-rom ) Since I still like to use dos from time to time I understand you. But I hate ntfs and sometimes even fat32 and sometimes even norton comannder, cos it cuts all my long filenames and then everything looks like file~1. I figured out two ways to determine if a sys is hibernated. On my C: was a file called "hiberfil.sys" just like the one od D: but just 40 bytes long, and when I opened it was "linkmulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)" I deleted the file and the system did not resume from hibernation, but went to the bootmenu. I wandered if there wobuld be any errors if I booted win2k, so I tried, but it didn't do a fresh boot it just returned from hibernation. So at boot the hiberfil.sys is checked before boot.ini so if you have a multi os system you can't boot to other systems while in hibernation or can you? I tired after deleting the hiberfil.sys on c: and I could boot to w98 and then normaly resumed from hibernation afterwards. (but be careful when you do this on w xp without the sp1 or w2k without sp3. Everything i changed, installed ... while in hibernation booting to another system was trashed and put in a "found.000" folder when resuming from hib. M$ says it is fixed in the sp1, but be careful) when you're not in hibernation there is no hiberfil.sys on c: so you could write something like "if exist c:hiberfil.sys then..." (haven't got an A+ in programing) So how does the windows know when it's hibernated and when not. When viewing the hiberfil.sys on d:, that has the size of my ram i noticed "hibr" at the start of the file when it was in hibernation, when it was not there was nothing i could read. This is for a multi OS system i don't know what happens when you have a single xp sys. But try to look for something similar. Hope it helps. Good luck. Btw post back when you wrote the utillity and what it does. I'm interested (very) 8)

    Direct X problem

Did you try to install dx8.1 or SP1? What happens when you run dxdiag?
  12. I had this problem since w95. I have two computers connected with a lan. I'm using compex RL2000 cards which use a Winbond 89C940 chip and XP recognizes them so. The problem is when I try to copy a file from one computer to another the system from which I'm copying from slows down big time (even the mouse has a few second lag). After the copying is finished everything is back to normal. I tried bnc and utp no difference. When I play games everything is normal. Only copying and opening files causes this problem. I replaced the RL2000 card with an old isa and there were no problems at all. I've heard something about MRU and maximum multicast, but I can't set them anywhere. Is there a way to set them in the register? I also tried different drivers (microsoft, compex, winbond...) all the same. It also makes no difference w95, w98 or XP. I use only tcp/ip with a static ip. Any Ideas if there is something else I could set or try. I seems like the problem occurs when the card is using full bandwith ;( ? Please help!

    Comanche, MotoGP, OpenGL32.dll voodoo3 installprobs

Sorry Strippe we can't help you. Not many of us use voodoo's nowdays. I still have a diamond monster voodoo1, and I even played QIII Arena on win2k and XP's, but the menu was crappy. Maybe there will be some new drivers that'll help you. Wicked GL may help you (I think it's not for free). Although I'm not sure that moto gp and commanche run on openGL so even if you do manage to install opengl32 it won't help. SOrry

Get a geforce, since newer games don't support 3dfx products and nvidia won't do anything about it. Yeah I think it sucks too.

Weird stuff happeing on home network

Did you try to connect just two computers directly, without a hub. Could be that there's something wrong with it?
  16. 3com 3C905BCombo. Or you can get a bnc to utp converter.
  17. ;( Yes it's a b..ch! I have a 128 Mb dimm cas2 ram I use in many different macines, so I'm inserting it in many different motherboards and taking it out. But yesterday as I wanted to boot one of my old macines I herard that beeeep beeeep that none of use likes . BTW this ram worked in this macine before. I cleaned the ram contacts with alcohol, and dusted off the slot, but again beeeep beeeep... so i tried some other boards, but it only worked on an Intel se440bx-2, but not in all slots. There is no visible damage on the ram and other ram works without problems. Something else I noticed, if force the ram while inserted to one side a little it works again but if I release it the computer hangs. Could it be that frequent ram inserting damages the ram? Anyone had similar problems. Is there a way to test what is wrong (beside the ram tester). Please help.

You guys crash your computers a lot?

I have had a few cases that I couldn't run a stable system on. In some cases it was the ram and in some it was the motherboard itself. Hard to tell though. It can also be incompatibility. Check for bios upgrades. Or try replacing ram mobo... In one case i couldnt make a 4gb hdd work in a sys. It booted and everything but after a while some strange error happened like spontan reboots. Thr hdd works with no problems in another sys, and the one I replaced it with works well too. When something like this happens it really ruins my day and I wish I had no computers, but after a few q3a's the world seem ok again (Yeah whatever)

    Media Player 6.4 Codecs

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediatech40/Install/8.0/WIN98Me/EN-US/wmpcdcs8.exe This was "I feel lucky" hit on google searching for "microsoft codecs". I don't know if there are all codecs here, there are at least all of the microsoft ones. If you're looking for others like divx and stuff there is a reasonable doubt that microsoft will ever support it since it develops it's own standards for almost everything. If this is what you're looking for I'm surprised that you couldn't find it yourself (I know the search engone on the microsoft's site sucks big time). Otherwise I haven't heard of any other codec packages.
  20. I have a ABIT ST6 Raid MB with a 1,3 GHz celeron. Before the 1,3 I had a 900Mhz celeron. There is however a certain difference between those two beside speed. On the 900 I could notice when it was idle cos the cpufan had a lower pitch (noise), when it was not idle it had a higher pitch (the cpufan was spinning faster I suppouse). But with the new tualatin the fan is the same speed all the time idle or not idle. Cos of that the cpu is quite warm all the time. The difference between idle and not idle is 4°C (49 idle 53 not idle) as far I can remember it was much more on the 900 Celeron. I tried the cpufan from the old celeron, but it was the same. I tried cpuidle and some other software cooling programs but they have no effect. SP1 didn't fix this. Does anyone have this problem on a tualatin cleron or PIII? ;( What about P4's or amd's. What is the temperature difference between idle and not idle? Please help.

  23. XP has more new features and stuff, but I think it makes the less stable. I've seen more BSOD on XP's than on 2K's. Soon I'll have to make a new install of XP's cos the're starting to act weird. :x I also do most of my gaming on XP's, but the games still run faster on the god old w98. I suggest you do them both if you can. A multi os system ain't that bad if your computer boots fast
  24. [size:18][/size]I have a problem on win XP. When I boot power management works normaly. But after I play a game (e.g. GTA3) or use some programs the hard disks and the monitor dont turn off after 5 minutes anymore (I have set both to 5 minutes). I have 12 prosesses running and no programs. Haven't tried SP1 yet. Any suggestions please. ;(
