    Norton Ghost problem.

It may not help, but try to read the gost discs on a different machine (cd-rom). It may (or may not) work. Good luck
  2. I always use the ones from the asus site and I update them regularly. (bios, lan, sound, intel chipset drivers...) It works best for me that way.
  3. Did you try a fresh install of win2k? Try a stability test program like memtest or prime95.

what the hell happened to this forum

I migrated to a local forum in my country, although I liked ntcompatible very much. I used to visit it at least twice a day, but now I don't like it that much. Can't find the time really. It would be a big loss if this forum would die.

Installed new dual processors and it woln't work

Intel explains it in their processor specification, but who cares as long as it works Usualy you need two processors with the same stepping to run dual cpu's (p2, p3) but I have also seen dual systems which didn't meet this requirement. I guess the steppings are not so different afterall (read: intel doesn't really fix anything they just name it a new stepping )

Gigabit NIC on ASUS P4P800 Deluxe?

I think you need cat6 cables for gigabit lan.
  7. You could rename one of your disks G: into C: in disk management. Create a mem drive or an virtual drive. Try this Create a directory called "c" (for example) on your G: drive Open a command prompt type "subst c: g:\c" open my computer and you should see a c: I don't know if it will work to fool the programs. Good luck

    Motherboard Recomendations

I have a P4P800 and it is also a great board. I run a celeron on it, but I intend to buy a P4 3,0. It only supports raid on sata not pata. But read the reviews.

Hardware Failure...Help me identify what's fried!

It could be the psu mobo or the cpu. Remove all the cards, ram... except the cpu. Power on and if it doesn't beep you can be sure it's one of those three. Test the psu in another system. If you ask me it's most likely the mobo.

XP vs P4, what to get?

I'm an intel fan so you know what I'll recommend. I own an asus P4P800 with a celeron (out of cost reasons) P4's are really expensive here in Europe. But the board is stable and no problems so far. On the other hand I'm thinking my next comp might be an amd, but just for gaming not for "serious" work. If you do get a P4 stay away from prescotts (P4E) they tend to get quite hot.

slow boot into safe mode win2k....

It's slow on all systems since win95. Can you recall that it was faster?

    3D Game PC???

By the time the os, games and programs will use 64 bit, and be faster than in 32bit mode everybody will have 64bit cpus. Not even linux makes good use out of 64bit.

    RAID 1 BOOT PROBLEM

You could also boot to recovery console and try fixmbr and fixboot commands if it doesn't boot properly.
  16. I'm trying to run a simple web page from my home computer. I'm running tinyweb server (I tried other server software too), but none worked until I found out that my ISP is blocking all ports below 1024. My previous ISP didn't do that, but I'm out of college so no way of getting it back. Changing the ISP is also no option cos there is only one ISP in our cable network. I'm curently running my test page on port 8080 an alernative HTTP port http://tomay.no-ip.com:8080/ it loads without a problem, but if I just enter http://tomay.no-ip.com it times out. Is there a way to bypass this blocking? Please help!

best way to back up win98 home pc

I think win98 has a backup program integrated In my computer right-click on a drive and choose properties, then open the tools tab, there you'll find backup.

New motherboard..... xp crashes on load....

    How did you fix it?

New motherboard..... xp crashes on load....

First backup. Then you can try repairing the installation. Boot form the winXP CD and choose the repair installation option (not the recovery console) It is advisable to have the same service pack version CD. I have managed to do this with sp1 without much of a problem, but others have not made such a positive experience, so be careful and backup.

    Dead Spanned Volume

I guess you have a software raid. First backup all your data if you can. If you know which hdd is bad you can try ghosting it to a new drive which has to be the same (type and size I think, but not sure) If the ghosting program can read all the data from the bad drive you might get it all working again. BTW: I tested this with hardware raid 0 with only two disks.

    Processor Upgrade ?? P4 or P4E Prescott ??

Your mobo is not prescott capable. It only supports p4 processors which run at 400 or 533 MHz FSB (front side bus) Prescotts and p4c's run at 800. You could try overclocking your celeron to 533fsb instead of 400 (stock), but I'm not sure how. The fastes CPU your mobo supports is the P4B 3.06 which is the fastes 533fsb cpu. http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph07942 You can also check the hp page and search for cpu upgrades for your system. Some mobos based on the intel 845 chipset support 800fsb cpu's by overclocking but I doubt your will.

    Processor/CPU Upgrade

So far I didn't have to reinstall windows when changing a cpu so I doubt that you will have to.

    Sudden memory loss!!!

I booted the computer and as usualy it started waking up from hibernation. Suddenly a screen apeared, that memory configuration has changed and bla bla bla... So i rebooted just to find out that my computer has lost 32MB ram. From the original 512MB there were only 480MB. Apart from that the system seemed stable. So I ran sisoft sandra to see that one of my 128MB modules was 64 MB on one side and 32MB on the other. WTF, how can that happen. So I reseated the memory and everything is back to normal. How can that happen. This system is running rocksolid for a few months now without any problems. Not OCed, latest bios... Should I be woried that it could happen again? What if it happens when the computer is running? Anyone had similar experiences?
  25. Should work with no problems. Just set the jumpers right. I'm running my system with two ide HD's, a cdrw and a cdrom and no problems.
