    Erasing a Hard-drive

I'm going to sell my PC and need to COMPLETELY erase without a trace everything.
  2. I am new to the Win2k thing so please bare with me. Someone told me that you can't burn CDs if your system is formated with NTFS. Can someone please shed some light on this subject for me? Thanks.

    Performance on system?

I would disagree about the k6-2 being a terrible CPU. The K6-2 is an admirable milestone in personal computing. It single handedly paved the way for the ATHLON (which is the CPU of choice for most manufacturers) and without it we all would be paying big money, whatever Intel wanted us to pay for an inferior CPU, the P4 (what a joke).
  4. Checking to see if anyone else is experiencing hard-drive thrashing for about 5 seconds after WinXP 2600 boots up and comes up to the desktop. It appears XP is either looking for something or is completing some kind of task after the desktop comes up. I have check in 'services' for the culprit but since I am new to the whole NT thing I probably don't know what to look for.

    Hard-drive thrashing!!

Nemesis, Thanks for the tip. I checked the event viewer and didnt find any errors, but found that Diskeeper 7, which I recently installed is performing its thang. I was stumped, so thanks. ps. I didnt even know what the event viewer was for until now, thanks.
  6. Going to reload XP, can anyone provide an opinion on how many partitions to use. I have read, 1 for the OS and 1 for apps. I have a 40gb hd and need some constructive advice. Thanks.

    How many partitions

Thanks for the replies. I will try 2 different partitions. One for the OS and some common apps and the other for games and mp3s, etc. Thanks for the advice everyone.

    Unbloating XP

I just reformated and installed XP Pro. 2 gigs for an install?!!! Can someone tell me how to get rid of some of this trash. The "add-remove programs" tab doesnt allow too much removing (win98 had better digging around options). I was able to remove MSN crap but freakin messenger is still about and I dont use front page either.

    Running UNDYING

  12. Using XP Pro. Everything was cool until I installed nvidia 21.81 ref drivers. Now my system takes a good 60 to 70 seconds to power down. Anyone else having this problem. Tried the 21.83 whql drivers just made things worse.
  13. I would appreciate any input. Which is the better all around file system NTFS or FAT32? I heard that NTFS is slower than FAT32 because of all the monitoring extras involved.

    ntfs and cd burning

He made a pretty good argument that cdfs was not compatible with ntfs. That readable cdfs was but cds could not be written to through ntfs. Thanks and I will put a foot in his a**! I should post his name and email address for all to pound on him.

    Running UNDYING

Thanks for the info. I tried XP.....HATED IT!!!!! The pretty interface and double the system requirements of 2000 were reason enough to dump it. Easy CD creator hated it also, since XP has built in burning stuff. I had to uninstall Easy CD creator and it wiped out my both my cd rom drives. I couldnt even reinstall them!!! XP is just glorified, simplified 2000.
