    Win2k vs WinXP

Anyone have any facts relating on how WinXP stacks up against Win2k. I've heard many arguments for both OS's but can't find any constructive or tangible evidence to pursuade me to go with one or the other. Anyone have any links or info on which OS is truly the one to use. There has to be a clear choice. Facts and figures and benchmarks should be able to determine which one is the DADDY. Thanks in advance.

    Windows 2000 & Gaming

When Win2k first came out all the magazines talked about how it butchered game framerates and playability. Have the service paks fixed these problems. I am thinking about Windows 2000. I have XP now and quite frankly I'm having some issues with it. It came preinstalled. My father in law swears by 2000 but could not provide me with its gaming ability. Also does it capture video ok (1394 fireware card)? XP is having a hard time capturinig video (sync problems). 1ghz AMD, 256mb ram, Gf2mx400 video card.
  4. I've got Ulead VideoStudio 6 which is excellent, but for quick email and archiving I like the windows media format. I like the small files you can get with decent quality. Ulead does do Windows Media Format but it is slooooowwwwww at doing it.
  5. PMISTRY, how did you "dump" it to Win2K? Is the setup.exe on the WinME CD?
  6. In Windows 2000 windows Explorer, you could set it up so that when you clicked on a file like an mp3 file or audio file it would play in explorer and a video file would show up as a small thumbnail video and you could play that in explorer also. Can you do this in XP? I cant seem to find it if you can.

    Explorer like Win2k in XP?

So you use win2k for most things DOSFREAK? How is your gaming performance in Win2k? I am contemplating moving back to Win2k. WinXP is problematic at best for me. Seems to be a slow performer and a resource hog. Just fishing for some advice.
  8. Is ACPI really necessary under XP for a desktop setup. I have disabled all the power management features for my PC anyway. I never leave it running if I am not using it. My only concern is powering down the PC without using the power button on the front.

Do I need ACPI with XP?

yep, checked that. Its set for DMA Mode 2 for the CD-R and Multi-Word mode 2 for the DVD drive.

Do I need ACPI with XP?

I am having a problem with my CD writer and DVD drive taking forever to spin up when I insert a disk. I read somewhere this can be caused by ACPI powering down the drives too frequently. I dont know if this is the problem. It didnt happen until I installed XP. When using Win98 the drives always spun up as soon as i popped in a disk.

    WinXP vs Win2K

I really do a alittle of everything. I game a little, I edit digital video, and photos. I also am on th net alot. I have read that they are essentially the same OS but why the extreme difference in system requirements. I have enough computer, 1ghz AMD geforce video card and all. My question I guess is - Why does XP require more than twice the system requirements than 2000 and is it worth the system resources hit if they are essentially the same OS?

  14. I have heard that partitioning a large drive under XP using NTFS is not a good idea, that it should be kept as one partition. I have a 40gb quantum drive.
  15. NTFS under XP is jackin' my system up!!!!!!!!! File access is incredibly slow. Programs take forever to start up. The harddisk is banging around constantly. FAT32 seemed much much faster. Also 3d framerates have suffered. Is NTFS better or just hype. It may be more secure but its definitly slower.

    NTFS Performance

I have formatted, reformatted and reformatted again and installed XP on both NTFS and FAT32. FAT32 is noticably faster. Program launch times are less than half. My hardware is a 1.2gh Athlon T-bird, 384mb Ram, VIA KT133 system chipset, Geforce 2 Mx400 video card, 40Gb Quantum Fireball. I have noticed a huge performance difference between FAT32 and NTFS. I ran some HDD benchmarks on both files systems and NTFS cant come close to FAT32. I hate to say it but NTFS ain't all that. Just because M$ says it better doesnt mean a thing to me. NTFS runs like shite on my machine. FAT32 screams and I never had a problem on my older Windows 9X machines using FAT32. Its a tried and true system that has never failed me before. When or if FAT32 screws me then I will switch. Thanks for everyones input.

    NTFS under XP

I am encountering a problem with some driver setup files under XP formatted with NTFS. During my install of my Epson printer windows returned a "can't locate c:\ (files name) and the setup quit. Then the same problem during my VIA 4in1 setup. Then the same during Norton LiveUpdate of Antivirus. After LU downloaded all the files windows couldnt seem to find them. I went back to FAT32 and no problems. I reformatted and went back to NTFS and BAMMM!! the problem returned. HELP!!!!!

    NTFS under XP

Thanks Toby, I did have that disabled too but thought that only effected old DOS stuff. Thanks.
  20. Can I just reformat a FAT32 drive and install Windows XP fresh using NTFS? Someone told me I would have to "erase" the disk first. Since formatting doesnt erase the format, info and partitions a possible conflict could arrise from a FAT32 disk being reformatted with NTFS over it. I thought I was somewhat computer knowledgable but this is a new one on me. Has anyone else heard of this.

    NTFS under XP

Someone told me its because I disabled the Last Access Update in NTFS. Some files need this to lookup certain files atributes? Sounds like its not it since the setup files I'm running were not present when I disabled the Last Access Update within the file system. I am stumped. I am sticking with FAT32 until I find out what is causing this.

    Geforce 2 mx...recommended ?

I have a g-force 2 mx400 with 64mb ram. I have no problem running anything 1024x768 32bit. I just finished Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the gf2mx400 was silky smooth. I would highly recommed it. The new gf4mx is just about as cheap though.
  23. I recently installed SiSoft Sandra and had it check my system. I responded back under the printer section to switch from RAW format to an EMF format of printing. I went to the printer properties and there are 4 EMF options (EMF 1.003/ EMF 1.006 /EMF 1.007 /EMF 1.008) Does anyone know the difference and which one I should use.

    Erasing a Hard-drive

Anyone know of a good hard-disk erase utility. I don't want to just re-format, I want to completely wipe it out then re-format.
