Can't play any music CD's. Plz help!

When I put any music CD (retail or burned) into either my CDROM (Y:\) or DVDROM (Z:\), Winamp & Media Player both refuse to play it; >Winamp just says [unknown host] cda://Y,1 (2,3,....) >Media Player just tells me it's an unknown format Both drives can read data & game CD's just fine. I have asociated the media players with audio CD's, but it didn't help. The problem surfaced out of the blue, since I've always played music CD's on my PC, & I've never had this problem before. Anyone have any ideas?

Can't play any music CD's. Plz help!

Quote: 1st experiment: Rather than use Winamp or Windows Media Player go to Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/CD Player - if it plays your CD's, you know that the problem is not with the CD and your the Codecs have not been changed.(the error message you get from Winamp can mean that it is trying to look some CD ip on the net and cannot make a connection). If it doesn't play if may mean the codecs were changed or the drivers for the CD's are corrupt. 2nd Experiment: Copy an mp3 from the CD to the Hard Drive. Again try to play the CD using the CD player supplied by XP. If it plays, your codecs are fine. If not the Codecs have been corrupted or substituted. Run your anti-virus software to see if you have some beast lurking on your machine that may have caused the damage. If you can play the CD with the CD player on the CD, reinstalling Winamp and Media Player should alleviate the problem. If you can play the CD with the CD player on the Hard Disk but not on your CD devices it means there is a difficulty with those devices. These things can happen for no reason because they can be hardware related. They can also happen inadvertantly because we have installed some new software or game that puts dll's and drivers in the system that optimizes that software but breaks something else. Have you made any such installations? Sampson, thank you for all your help. Here's some results: > Media Player & Winamp can play both wav & mp3 files. This can be done whether the music is on CD or on the hard disk. However, retail music CD's cannot be played by Winamp or Media Player. Both give the same error as stated in my initial post. > Windows CD Player can play retail music CD's. > I just did a fresh install of Win2K & immediately tried to play retail audio CD's, but both players refused. No virus protection (or other background) programs reside on the machine. Any more ideas?

Need link on how to edit mpeg

I downloaded a 255MB mpeg file. I want to post part (2 or 3 MB) of it on my personal webspace. What kind of tools do I need to accomplish my goal? Links to helpful sites would be most appreciated.
  4. Well, here are a couple of links to wet your appetites. Thoughts on the industry's direction? What kind of impact will this have on SCSI? http://www.tomshardware.com/business/02q1/020315/cebit-01.html http://www.abit.com.tw/abitweb/webjsp/english/news/en_0203131/en_0203131.htm
  5. First off, I'd like to apologise for my ignorance, as this will undoubtedly sound like stoopid questions to some of you. I will try to be clear & provide as much info as possible (probably much non-related info too, sorry) I installed W2K Adv Server at home. During install I ticked the ftp option, but unticked most/all others. This machine (192.168.0.2) is behind a NT4 workstation (192.168.0.1). The 2nd nic in the NT4 box is connected to my cable modem. I also have Sygate (ICS + firewall) running on the NT4 box. I have been using the free web space (10MB) provided by my ISP to store drivers 'n such. I have now run out of room & want to use my W2K box to store my files & use a ftp client (Cuteftp-Pro) to access them from the 'Net. Using the ISM applet in Admin Tools, I right-clicked my computer & chose New > FTP. I followed the wizard instructions & created my site, "Stuff", & my home folder, which I called "Storage". I also stopped the default site service. I have a few questions related to what I've done. I hope they are not too many, but understand if they are; [*]Am I now running what you call a IIS server? [*]How do I go about applying all the Hotfixes/patches? Windows update doesn't show anything different. [*]Considering the Class C address, what about 'Net access from ftp client? [*]Do (should?) I want to Allow Anonymous Connections or Allow IIS to control Password? [*]Can potential hackers "see" my password as I'm logging in? If so, what are my options? [/list=1] Thank you for your time. Any help offered will be most appreciated.
  6. I was wondering if the Windows alt+tab key combo can somehow be disabled while I play Counter-Strike? I use "alt" to move backwards, & sometimes hit "tab" to do a quick check to see how many enemies remain, only find to find myself staring at the desktop. This is quickly follwed by a string of obscenties. Can this be done within Windows (regsitry) or 3rd party software perhaps?

Alt+Tab combo: can it be disabled in games?

ConQueso, thx for your help. That little utility does the trick, but it looks like I am forced to use it to launch the app (half-life) too. Is there some way to use this utility to force whatever shortcut I chose to run the exe to "IgnoreAltTab"?
  8. If I add custom fonts to a simple web page I create using FronPage 2000 (or even Word 2000), how do I get other people to see the fonts when I post it on the 'Net? If I view the page from one of my other machines, none of my custom fonts appear. The only time I can see the custom fonts is if I view the page from the machine that has them installed I was told that I had to "embed" the fonts into the page. After searching throughout the FP 2000 toolbars, I'm still at a loss. How exactly do I do such a thing?

    NT4 & DirectX 6

Hey all. I've been away from these boards for a while, but wanted to say it's good to be back. These boards are without question the place to be for NT info. I found a DX6 hack for NT4 after exhaustive searches on the 'Net. While being a little hesitant to install it, I figured "why not?" & went ahead with the install. Although I haven't noticed much difference, what I did notice is that NT4 is still as stable as ever (for me anyway) even though the author of the DX hack explicitly stated installing it "...may ruin your day...". I haven't installed any games on it other than Counter-Strike, which runs fantastic (though it always did). I was wondering if anyone has had similar good fortunes running any DX hacks on their NT4 box(es), & what (if any) differences you noticed?

    Alice in Win2k

Continuing with Lactic's reply, I'd make sure DirectX is installed correctly too. Go to Start > Run > dxdiag & make sure you don't have any errors/conflicts. If you do, reinstall DirectX.

    Need DirectX 7.0 on NT 4.0 SP6a

Quote: How can I install DirectX 7.0 or trick NT to support programs which require DirectX 7.0?Thanks, Well, I've been running DX6 on my NT4 box without problems for a while now. I haven't seen a DX7 hack though. Maybe time to upgrade to Win2K?
  13. Hi everyone. I have a couple of questions, hopefully someone can help me out. 1. When I bookmark a site in IE6, I notice in my list of favorites that the newly bookmarked site has it's own icon beside it's name. After a while, I notice it has the regular blue "e" icon beside it (like all other bookmarks). Is there any way to have all my bookmarks keep their initial "custom" icons? 2. Is anyone aware of a program that stores all your Windows appearance settings, so you can merge them into your registry next time you do a fresh install of Windows. What I mean is, after I finish a fresh installation, I spend 1/2 an hour setting up Windows to look the way I like it (fonts, window colors, desktop color, etc, etc). I really dislike going through this process after every install. If there is such a program, do you think I could use it to implement all the registry tweaks I do as well? I know that the registry is very specific to the current setup of the pc, but I almost always setup identically (partition wise also) every time.
  14. I have been running IE6 without a glitch since it was released. For something different, it tried the latest version of Opera browser. For unimportant reasons (okay, it's slow & I hated it), I uninstalled Opera. Now all my fonts are screwed when I view the pages with IE6. The fonts are tiny & barely legible. Some internet shortcuts that I had pasted on my desktop would not work until I set IE6 to "Check to see if it is the default browser", now they work. But this font problem is driving me crazy. I even went into the registry & deleted the Opera folder, but it didn't help. If I go to Tools > Internet Options > General > Fonts > The fonts are listed as: Language Script > Latin Based Webpage Font > Times New Roman Plain Text Font > Courier New Suggestions?
  15. Looking at the following key in the Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management I am baffled at why the SecondLevelDataCache parameter is defaulted at 512(K). How many processors today have a cache this large? Anyway, I am temporarily running a Celeron 850, would I change this to 128? Also, how does the LargeSystemCache setting differ from the aforementioned one? Should I set this to 128 too? While there are quite a few interesting parameters in this particular key, is anyone familiar with the four "Pool" related (PagedPool & NonPagedPool) settings? Have a great weekend

ASPI Layer for W2k, does it exist?

Pardon my ignorance, but I am still unclear on this whole ASPI issue. I have an Adaptec 29160 card installed (I used the Adaptec driver from floppy during installation), but when I run Adaptec's ASPI checker program, it says I have no ASPI layer installed. Wouldn't the ASPI layer be installed with my SCSI card? Furthermore, when I run the ASPI install program (v4.6) from Adaptec's site (the one that tells you not to use it on Win2K > due to the legal issues mentioned in a previous post), I am told I have "no Adaptec host adapter" installed in my system, & I am forced to cancel the installation. I would like to use the Exact Audio Copy music ripping program, but it recommends an external (rather than the native Win2K) ASPI layer, although the native layer does work. Suggestions? Could the fact that I installed Win2K as a "Standard PC" have anything to do with it? Also, I do have a very recent (or the latest) version of Nero installed.

OT: How to save web page?

I found a site (conspiracy type pages) that gets moved or shut down a lot. I'd like to save the whole thing (including all media files) to my hard disk. How can I do this? I am using Win2K + IE6.
  19. I have never had a problem with this utility before. But I just ran the "Nvidia Win2K refresh fix" on an older Samsung Syncmaster 550s monitor (I made the registry backup on the hard disk). Now when I boot the machine (& I will be doing this physically soon), I can't load windows. I get as far as the initial BIOS post screen, then the monitor just starts going crazy. It starts screwing up before the Win2K "Press F8" screen during the boot process. I find that strange considering that screen is well before the Win2K boot GUI. I tried: > pressing F8 even though I couldn't see anything on monitor (just in case I was allowed into the debugging screen) > switching video cards > clearing the CMOS > degaussing screen > yelling obscenities Suggestions?

OT: How to save web page?

Alec, yes, many of these types of sites get closed down by the U.S. gov. The ones that are most always shut down are the ones talking of the C.I.A (& Mossad) involvement in the Sept. 11th attacks > somehow all tying into the gazillion barrels of oil in/around the Caspian Sea. Look for the Russians to be getting nervous..... Many of these sites talk of "Lighting Fires" > the equivalent of you setting a fire in one neighbors yard, telling him it was the other neighbor, & letting them kill each other so you end up with their land. But, sometimes there is no direct line to what you covet. This is where setting a fire in your own yard can be useful........

Lost my Admin Tools. List, anyone?

I accidentally deleted my "Administative Tools" shortcut icons 8). It displays an empty tab when I go to: Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > "empty". Can someone list them (the exe's) for me? That way I can find them & restore them to this folder.

    No printers in Device Manager?

I noticed that my printer is not showing in "Device Manager" in Win2K, although it is working fine. Is this normal? Where would I look to check which driver version I'm using? I can't find a driver version if I go into my printer's "Properties".
