    Splinter Cell troubles (again)

Indeed. If you are into video games, definately get an add in graphics card. There are some great and highly affordable choices out there now. Heck, I am still using a geoforce 2 and have not quite reached the point where i need to update the card. Splinter Cell ran amazingly well for me. Only problem is...i got so hooked on the game that i ended up finishing it in just 4 days. and no multi players means..

007 Nightfire won't start in XP

my friend had this problem. One of the things i suggested was installing the indeo codec since win XP sp1 (a) does not come with it. I also suggested a few other things i can't remember. But the game worked after... Video clips played...and the mouse cursor moved at a normal speed on the second menu

    Question about Splinter cell

strange...'cause i have a geoforce 2 and was totally impressed by the games's graphics. Esp the shadow's (lighting) were ultra cool. I would like to get a new video card but not because splinter cell broke its back. The only game that has come close so far..is SOF2 on the huge map (the mansion). I had to scale down the graphics severely to make it playable.
  4. "This build of CD code is for Spearhead. This is an invalid build of CD code. Please fill out the ereg config form to obtain a valid CD code build." I found this at EA's support site. Its the exact same error as i get when i try to install nightfire (just replace the word 'spearhead' with 007:nightfire). The recommended solution is ensuring no compatibility is applied and instructions are for XP. This does not work for my win2000 nor is their a compatibility being applied. Why am i getting this error?? it happens with both cd-roms that i have... I have a geoforce 2 (using the latest offical det drivers) (with spearhead i had to disable run32.dll to get the installation past crashing. Though i did not get this particular error) TIA for any positive input/solution )

007:nightfire can't install --buildcode error pls help

finally figured it out. I had to make a shortcut of the setup file on the desktop. From here i disabled win98 compatibility. The game then installed normally. I'm not sure why the cd-rom drive is using win98 compatibility. anyways...YAY!

    The Official UT 2003 thread

just to say that i really like ut2003 online --its still intense and in your face. They balanced the weapons. I will say that i don't like the sniper weapon --even after they straightened out the light beam. I suppose it is a beam to balance the weapon out more. Instead of a brief muzzle flash, everyone gets a good long chance to see where you are. I think its the sound of the old snipe rifle i miss more though. It was very satisfying when you got a head shot Assault was the best part of UT2003 single player. So i'm not quite sure why they would scratch it. Assault required great team cooperation online --which is almost always non existant (unless there are clan wars about). So maybe they just decided that simple was best. And finally, ya, it does play like a suped up version of Q3. But i like Q3 )
  7. Well..is there? i'm too afraid to try it.
  8. hi..this posting is old...thos at the time were able to get high stakes working..including me. Its run very well 4 me under win2k since. In my case, the final thing i had to do was change a video card setting in the registry. I was thrown off by the fact that my video card was properly detected and so i thought i did not have to alter the setting. But i did. I can't remember exactly now...so i will have to look for the other thread and point you to it. Edit: look here... http://www.ntcompatible.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22255&highlight=speed

System Shock 2 won´t run, even with "-lgntforce"

You need to look at the compatibility settings in XP and then see if you can't use those in win2k and tell me what the settings are . I tried installing sytem shock 2 yesterday and was able to install it using compatibility 98 mode. However, when i tried to run it..i would get a severe kernal 32 error. I can't remember the exact message now.

    NFS4 render options

under hardware acceleration it should be: 0*00000001 (1) instead of 0*00000000 (0) however i'm not sure forcing the issue is such a good idea. edit: and group would be set to d3d

    NFS4 render options

well i changed the dx setting to the d3d as it says on this site if your card was not recognized (mine was tho). and now...IT WORKS!! AWESOME -go win2k!- and thanks for inspiring me again with this thread.

    NFS4 render options

how'd u guys get that far.. after i install and 3d setup fails... all i find in my registry is: default 3d device description (no entry for this) install path version i have a seperate entry for 3dsetup...lists 15 cards. 1.5.7.0. is my 3d setup version ('99) EDIT: ok i updated my 3d setup file to a newer version and it detected my card fine. But now when i try to run high stakes in 98 or 95 compatibility mode... i get a message that says warning #2 : your files are corrupted please re-install the game. This is as far as i got over a year ago now
  14. the problem with high stakes -at least for me-- is that the *_mp file referenced is a tempory file generated during setup (at least thats my conclusion). In the app tool kit you have to reference the file. But its not there yet. I can't see a place to copy the fix. Or, to reference the file without browsing to it. Obviously the fix got there somehow. So how do you apply the fix before the game is installed?? Also the ability to delete compat. fixes in the main database is greyed out. So how do get around that?
  15. obviously i got my flavours mixed up... we both know there were only 2 XP flavours and obviously 1 did not support 2 cpus..the cheaper one. BUt if ya feel ya got to take a cheap shot fine...i deserved it for not getting my flavours right.
  16. high stakes is one of the games i was talking about. interesting that win2k now has a fix for the 3d data component but NOT the rest of high stakes. Seriously i just don't understand why MS did not release the same fixes for win2k as XP. My cynical mind say that they want to continue to have us believe that win2k is really a business platform while trying to get us to upgrade to XP. I have no basis for this conclusion and i am still hoping MS will update the database soon. That to has no basis.
  17. i would also point out that win2kpro supports 2 CPUS. WinXP does NOT! i would have to spend extra money and get XP advanced. The true upgrade path for win2k is XP advanced NOT XP pro. the XP interface is dumbed down which may not be a bad thing. But i like to control more aspects of my O/S Sure XP has more "features" thrown in. However, I already have burner software, for example, and do not need XP's stripped down version. Stability/SPeed (XP vs win2k) performance --I have seen conflicting info on this and have not come to my own conclusion on this yet. XP is the chosen O/S now and so will get more support. For that reason alone, i will probably upgrade in a year.

    Wolfenstein Error!

it says right in the readme that the hunkmegs is flawed. I was crashing after dying and refused to accept that hunkmegs was at fault. I finally turned it off and my problem vanished. edit: I just double checked...I was in error. It is not mentioned in readme. I can't remember how i found out now.
  19. the problem with that is i have some games that need fixes XP has but win2k's 133 fixes do not cover. there also seem to be some specialty patches for some games... i prefer win2k to XP by far. Its just a couple old games XP can do now but wink can not. I'm not losing sleep over this (well not much
  20. i have not done it yet...just been assessing what might be impacted. But yes, i am suggesting you take the contents of the appPatch in WINxp (dlls 2 because they seem to contain the extra fixes XP has) and transfer them to the win2k appPatch directory (after backing up win2k's files there) Win2k has a few not listed in XP which would have to be custom added back... like explorer (though i'm not sure why a core part of win2k had to be made compatible with itself). Sooner or later i will try this. However, i hope that Jerry tells us how he did it. )

    Windows 2000 & Gaming

same system specs..ie a duel boot machine? and you have to run the test a few times to get a proper rate. I know that i get differing results each time i use the benchmark...usually within 180 pts tho.

    Windows 2000 - SP3 Feedback -Post here

i feel the need to confess stupidity... re: the reminder thing on the autoupdate. I only noticed today that if ya don't want the update, you simply leave it unchecked and click close. duh
  23. you alt-tab. however, some older games are not designed for this and so can lead to crashes when you try to get back. Some games have an ignore alt-tab built in. Still, you will find you can multi-task with quite alot of games.

    Windows 2000 & Gaming

if you have XP..no need to go back to win2k. unfortunately, MS let me down and failed to equalize win2k support for games vs win XP. What issues are you having? maybe some1 here can offer you a better solution.

The auto update allows you to toggle to manual. So push becomes only if you want the updates. I see no problem with it --'cept maybe its max reminder delay is 3 days instead of never.
