    Restricting Internet Access With ADSL

The hard part is there are no DNS numbers on the client machines. They all are assigned automatically. I could probably re-configure everything, but wasn't sure if windows 2000 had a way to do it with say permissions or something.
  2. We are running a small 6 Workstation network here at work, and I was wondering if it's better to let the DHCP server assign IP address' or is it better to assign them manually? Whats better for long term performance and reliability?
  3. Getting DSL installed in a day or two and was wondering if I will still be able to use ICS across our network like we do with dialup. Never used DSL before. New to my area =) Can't wait hehe

Getting DSL, can I still use ICS?

    Need Advice...

We are trying to connect a computer from another town to our small Lan here at work. We had tried modem to modem which works but is connecting at 26.4 (Using two 56k v.90 USR Modems. Our server only has a dialup connection to the internet (As that is all that is available at this time in our area) I know we can do this via the internet but I am unsure how where our IP address is always diff each time we connect to the net. Can a VPN be used? Help!!
  6. Can I somehow setup my Win2K to automatically do a defrag every week when I am asleep? I don't see an option to do it anywhere. I would like to do it without using a 3rd party program if possible.

Is this dns2go client considered a host? Or do I still have to set a vpn host up?

    Need Advice...

I just registered a free domain and will give that try either later today or first of the week. Hopefully this will go pretty smooth. Haven't done much with domains, but I guess there is no better way to learn. Thanks

    Need Advice...

When I go to setup a client for VPN it asks for a host name or I.P address. This is where I am confused. If the IP address of the server changes each time it connects to the internet, then how do I know what IP address to have the client connect too?
  11. Doesn't that just start the defrag program and not actually defrag? I was under the impression that I needed to use switches when I launch it. I can try using the task scheduler again, but when I tried it a few months ago I had no success. Maybe there was something I missed.
  12. For the most part, ntbackup has been working great in backing up our network drive. Every once in a while, it won't backup. There are no errors in my event log, and no backup log gets generated in my backup log folder. It does not happen often, maybe once evey 2 weeks. It's setup to do a daily backup at 1:00am and lasts like 25 mins. Any idea why it does nothing once in a while and with no errors? Or is it just one of those things?
  13. We are trying to connect two computers in different towns to each other for networking. We have our server running windows 2000 and our workstation running *gulp* Windows ME. When the computer using ME dials into the server and connects, I have no access to the network. We have a small 6 workstation network setup at work, and I just need this computer dialing in to have access as well. Why is there nothing under Network Places? Is there something I am missing? Network places is completely empty. No shared drives are listing. No shared printers are listing, notta. I have an account setup for the computer dialing in, and I have double checked everything. I can connect to the server with no problem (via Modem) but don't know where to go from here. This is probably a simple problem, but I can't figure it out. This is my first time doing a remote network connection. =(
  14. Ok, I assigned a small range of IP addresses for the remote computer and that seemed to help a lot. It then asked me for a password for the resource: \\servername\IPC$ After giving the network a domain it seemed to work finally and get past the password problem mentioned above. I found the workstations and host under My network places after doing a search for the host name. Now, what exactly is the diff between a Workgroup and a Domain? This would only work after giving it a domain name. I hate being so numb in this area (networking) but I have learned a lot in the past few weeks. This is still going to need some tweaking, but it's finally getting somewhere. Now will I have to map the network drive every time or will it connect on it's own? Things seem pretty different when doing it from a remote dial in. Thanks again guys for your patience with my learning. You all are the best resource out there!
  15. I am going to try pinging the host today, and if that doesn't work what do I try? Using a new protocol? If so, which would be the best route? Clutch, your very good with networks I hear, what would you suggest on this problem?
  16. Like I said, I am pretty new to this whole dialup remote networking. I have TCP/IP installed of course, but do I need to enable or install anything else? I also don't use the ping command much. Any switches I need to use?
  17. I need to have a computer in one location dialup using a modem and connect to a network server in another location. I setup Win2k to allow incoming connections, and made an account for the incoming connection. For some strange reason I can't connect. The modem is a 56k USR v.90 external and is connecting to another v.90 modem. It's not even showing in incoming connection when we try to connect to the server. We have PcAnywhere installed for the same 2 computers, and had the host waiting for incoming calls as a service. I stopped the service for PcAnywhere, but still I am having no luck. Why in the heck is this not working? I was told it was pretty straight forward. I am kind of writing this in a hurry, so if further info is needed, please let me know. Any place where I can read about setting this up?
  18. I am running windows 2000 pro and have my system set up to use internet sharing so my roomate can get access through me. Now it was working great, then one day he was able to use the net but only for about 20 seconds. If he tries again to do somthing he can for about 20 seconds then it no longer responds. What could have happened? Is there a setting that could effect it like this? It's strange. Is there any info you all need reguarding our systems?
  19. Looking for a fax program that would allow me to send a single fax to multiple fax numbers. Anyone know a good program that does this?
  20. What are some good ways to tweak my dialup connection under win2k? I use internet connection sharing, so as long as it doesn't effect that, then I'll be happy =) I am using a USR 56k V.90 modem. Does messing with your MTU settings etc really make much of a difference? Any info would be appreciated!
  21. Is there a file size limit for an NT Backup file? I have a 20 gig 7200RPM drive I want to use for backing up our 7 gig network drive. The problem is I get a message saying that the media is full. It's not even close to full, and it always ends with a file size of 3.99 gigs before giving that error message. What am I missing? Why won't it backup the entire network drive? Why just 3.99 gigs?
  22. Thanks for the response Toby. I will go format the drive with the NTFS file system and see what happens.

    Internet Connection Sharing Question...

After reading my post, it sounds a little retarded. Let me explain again. My roomate plays an online game called Ultima Online. We have been using internet connection sharing for a while now with no problems. One day out of the blue, he no longer was able to connect to the Ultima servers. It starts to work, and connects him to the games patch server (for game patching of course) and then when it tries to recieve the message of the day, it freezes. Funny thing is, it works fine on my system, and he can access the web, but only parts of it. Some websites he can get onto, others he can't. Once in a while his game will connect to ther patch servers and he will recieve the message of the day, but then it again hangs. Almost like there is a block or something. In the above post I said the net works for like 20 secs. What I meant by that is, on the pages he can't connect to, it says, "website found waiting for response.." in I explorer, but doesn't do anything. Just hangs. I will try to do a ping later tonight from his system, but there has to be something that got changed. We have re-installed network drivers, operating systems, reconfigured ICS, and nothing seems to fix the problem. Any ideas?
  24. I installed a new 20 gig HD yesterday and lost use of a program that runs off our at work network. The program is dos based and we have 2 machines here that run windows 2000 and this program. There have been no problems at all until now. The only thing that has changed is my map networked drive letter. It changed from F: to G:. Nothing else has been changed, so I am assuming that has somthing to do with the program no longer running. Now I have checked the shortcut to the network based program and it has changed to G: automatically. Now is there a way for me to change my new hard drive from drive F: to say G ;( Any other possible idea's as to why the program doesn't run? I click my shortcut and the screen goes black then switches back to windows before the program has a chance of running. Kind of frustrating. Like I said, the hard drive was the only thing added to my system. No other hardware or software has been added and no settings changed. Help?!?

    Hard Drive "Config" question...

I found my problem... There was a batch file that needed editing. But I'm still curious, can you change your drive letters easily in win2k?
