    Microsoft Word crashes at launch.

Do you happen to have Winfax installed? If you do there is a word template that tries to load (i believe it is located in your) /program files/microsoft office/office/startup folder. It will crash/freeze your system during word.exe startup. It is a known issue, so if my loaction is wrong, you can look it up on the symantec website. good luck!
  2. How do I make a script that will restart my computer automatically say every monday morning? I had at one time a simple batch file that would restart my computer using scheduled task manager to execute it, but I can't find it, and there must be some new way to script the same thing to do it more efficiently. Any ideas? I know this sounds odd, but there is a reason behind it. Lets just say we have an employee at another office 30 miles away who can't even begin to restart a computer EVEN with written directions..so my manager asked if there was a way to automate it.

Quote: Try this... Open a command prompt start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt then type in shutdown /? Jim Is this a Win2k Server command? I can't get it to work for Win2k Pro.

Quote: Why is a person using a computer they cannot even restart! That's scary! Very scary hehe
  5. Out of the blue one day, my computer started to freeze when shutting down/restarting. Windows closes programs ok, goes into the saving setting screen fine, then when it gets to the point where on screen dialog goes away (The one that says saving setting etc..) the computer just stops. Everything freezes. It does this "everytime". I "HAVE" to unplug it. My hard drive is probably hating me right now. I didn't install any programs or change any settings (Work computer) Are there any "shutdown" files that might have gone corrupt? Or maybe a setting in the registry? Doesn't seem like a real hard thing to trace for you experts =D Like I said, eveything works fine until that very sec where it would either restart or turn itself off. Helpppp!
  6. Quote: Event viewer is your friend! Check it! Very true, but because windows is at the last stage of shutdown, the event viewer has nothing on it. I did also notice that just before the computer freezes, the hard drive spins down and stops... as soon as that happens, boom. Question: If I were to and "repair" my Win2k installation, would that overide all my current Win2k settings? In other words, will it do the same as a new install, or just repair damaged files. Never used that option before.
  7. We received a dell for one of our offices that came with WinXP. The software that the branch uses won't work with XP so they installed Win2K. We went to ATI.com and found drivers for the ATI Rage 128/Pro (Being the only choice really) but the setup says that those drivers won't work with our adapter. I am letting another guy handle this, but he is having no luck. I am almost wondering if the motherboard has the adapter onboard. Maybe that is part of the problem. I haven't had a chance to go look inside the system. Has anyone heard of this ATI Rage 128 ULTRA 32meg before? The computer just arrived 2 days ago, and they are currently running 16 colors hehe. The software they use can barely be seen due to the lack of color. Does anyone know anything that might help us out or point us in the right direction. Even dells support is boggled heh.
  8. Quote: They have....for the Radeon's. Don't expect any more from ATI. You'll be disappointed, oh and expect support to go down the drain once the successor to the Radeon series arrives.... Thats perfectly ok with me I am not a big fan of ATI anyway. Not to offend any ATI fans out there, but their products just aren't what I am looking for.
  9. For anyone else having this problem, here is the solution: http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/win2k/win2kr128513013279directx.html Did some research at rage3d and found a user with the same problem. Hope this can help someone else!
  10. Would I just be better off re-installing windows?
  11. Running Win2K Pro Sp3 (Downloaded all available updates) File system on C: is Fat32 (NTFS on the others) Is there any place I can have the shutdown routine saved to a .log file? Maybe through a debug method of some kind? I tested a spare hard drive with a fresh copy of windows and the problem isn't there, so I know it's not hardware related. Does my computer do any kind of memory/kernel dump during the last part of a shutdown routine? This problem is driving me nuts, anyone have any idea's on this?
  12. Is there a device out that will allow 2 people to use the same system, using 2 mice, 2 keyboards and two monitors?

Windows 95a Registry Value Needed (Quick and Easy)

Here is what you are asking for then (from the system properties screen) Microsoft Windows 95 4.00.950a IE 4.0.4.72.2106.8 Hope that helps somewhat. There is nothing listed for service pack, other than the a, b, c at the end of the windows version number.

Windows 95a Registry Value Needed (Quick and Easy)

Quote: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\CurrentVersion We still have a couple older systems with Win95a on them but the value you want doesn't exist on them. Are you sure it is the current version under windows NT? Just wanted to check, because I have no listing for windows nt in that area. Was it a miss-type?
  16. Recently, I noticed that all of my scheduled tasks have "could not start" under the status column. I created a new task for one of my backups, and that one works fine, but all my others still won't start. If I right click one and select run, nothing happens. Now, I could easily make new tasks for the things I need, but I am eager to find out what happened or how I can fix it. All of the tasks are "enabled" by the way

Scheduled Tasks - Could not start

If I create a backup account, will it still back up even when I am not logged into it? Or do I have to switch to the backup account when I leave for the day?
  18. Are there some settings that can be changed to allow information to be sent/received more quickly. Anything would be appreciated. I was told there are some MTU settings that would make a difference. We use TCP/IP and have 5 systems running Win95 for a certain DOS app, 3 systems running Win2K Pro, and one running .. ugh .. WinME. We also have broadband ADSL. I am familiar with the registry and have no issues changing stuff manually. Thanks!
  19. Where can I get info on setting up a wins server? 10 fold sounds like a nice speed increase
  20. Anyone know where I can get a decent quality card at?
  21. Recently we had to re-install a printer on one of our systems. We use this dot matrix printer for a DOS based database program called DME. (Durable Medical Equipment) Trying to get my company to update to a windows based program, but anyway here is my prob: Before the re-installation of the printer drivers, we were able to tell the computer to print something and a progress bar would move VERY fast from 0 to 100% and store what were printing in the print queue allowing us to continbue working or proceed to print something else. Now after the re-installation of the drivers the printer now prints as the progress bar moves up and no longer allows us to move on. We have to wait for the bar to reach 100% before the printer stops and allows us to continue. Now is there some sort of config that got set back to default that might be the cause of this. No printer settings were changed within the DME program, so I "assume" it is a setting elsewhere. I hope someone can help, we are losing time/efficiency.
  22. Hmmm, no idea huh? I'll keep looking...
  23. Never needed a firewall until now, so I am doing some research on what to get. Been browsing the web some, and heard ZoneAlarm Pro is pretty good. Anyone use it? Are there some better ones out there at a reasonable price?
  24. We just got ADSL installed in our office and everyone hooked up to the network has access to the net. Is there an easy way to restrict that? Server is Windows 2000 Pro and workstations are Win 95. There are 7 Pc's total.
