The Sims 2 Problem Solving Thread

Hey dosfreak, mind if I make a recommendation for your thread header here. Can you ask them to also post their system specifications. As you can see there are allready quite a few posts with TOO LITTLE information in order for us to help them properly. Also for anyone else posting a problem please let us know what kind of computer you have, what type of video card, how much ram, what type of sound card (that means 'On Board sound' or a seperate sound card ..IE soundblaster audigy etc). We cannot help if all you tell us is the game goes all funny what do I do??!!!!! so if you have posted allready please provide the info I just asked for and you will have more chance that someone will help. thanks S

    HELP WITH INSTALLING SIMS 2

Hi, Is it possible by chance that you bought the DVD version of the game and not the CD version. If you only have one CD then it is the DVD version and that is why the cd rom won't read the CD (actually DVD! lol) Now if you are sure you don't have the DVD version then can you tell me what type of cd-rom drive you do have and if you have any problems reading other Cd's. also can the Sims 2 cd you have be read in other computers beside your own? S

    I can't install Windows2K

What exactly do you mean by when you put the cd in the drive? are you putting the windows 2000 cd while your in Linux? if so, that is not the way you need to install win2k. you will want to make sure you have a partition that you can put the OS into without messing with your linux installation. and you would boot your computer with the win2k cd in the drive (making sure that your cd-rom drive is the first boot device in your bios) then follow the prompts to install. you will probably also need to make sure your GRUB is set to see both OS when booting to give you the option which OS you want to boot into. It's been a while since I have needed to install win2k AFTER installing Linux so you might want to wait till a more knowledgeable Linux guru comes along!! lol S PS it also helps on this board if you apologize for not asking about a SIMS 2 related issue (lol just kidding, it's an inside joke here)

    photography buffs

was checking out a site by photographer Abelardo Morell and was blown away by a series of pictures he made by blacking out all his windows except for a small pinhole then using a large flat film camera and a 8hours+ exposure. check out the pictures. http://www.abelardomorell.net/camera_obscura1.html as a side note I find this a great way to show people how light carries information. Codec "MEGA" packs: Which in your opinion, is best?

Generally I only need Divx, xvid,OGG and an Ac3decoder for audio. Divx , I get at divx.com xvid, I tend to use KOEPI's build I can't remember where I got the OGG codec off hand and the Ac3filter I got at DOOM9.org. that is pretty much it. with those I have been able to play everything I have had so far. Codec "MEGA" packs: Which in your opinion, is best?

Yes I agree with Adam on this one. Never install codec pacs as they are far more likely to cause you problems then solving any. S

    The Sims 2--Please Help

Hi, well in order to help it would help us if you could provide us with some more info about your computer. What are the specs on it, stuff like what kind of processor what type of video card etc. also is it a pre bought system like Dell etc and if so what is the model number. let us know and we can see what we can do to help. s
  13. Well I have not seen it yet but I do want to. but I was wondering when I first saw the trailer a few months back I could not help but think of Crimson Skies. I know it is nothing like that game but I think it was the planes that did it in terms of seeming familiar. but it does look like it might be a good romp, Kind of like the old serials they played in movie theaters back in the day.... Adding new hard drive

Hi, Yes you will need to format it. I am running windows 2000 so I am not sure if the procedure is the same however if you bring up the run box (START > RUN) and type in compmgmt.msc and clic run and that should bring up your computer management console and you will see an option down on the right hand side for disk management. clic on there and it should detect all your drives. choose the one that is not formatted and right clic on it. the option to format will be there. the sims 2 versus voodoo 3

Sorry to say but it is time to upgrade that video card. It won't support DX9c so you are out of luck. S
  19. No the 4.10 are not out yet. they are just using the pre-release drivers sent out for testing. Personally I have moved on from Doom3 and will be installing Star Wars battlefront when I get home. (picked up a copy for me and one for my room mate). S

    Question about mixing memory brands

it's because there is such a thing as sdramm ddr but it is still different then DDR. it kinda came between sdramm and ddr but then ddr more or less became the standard. sdramm ddr is just really sdram that can move the info both ways just like ddr. S
  24. thatsteveguy

    Question about mixing memory brands

You don't want to mix DDR ram and SDRAM. some older motherboards support the two but not sure if you could mix them like that. so unless you have another computer that could use the SDRAM don't try to put that other stick in as most likely it won't fit in your DDR motherboard. S

    XP Pro Crashing

also are you disabling the onboard video in the bios after you put the ati card in? and changing the video boot prefrence to AGP/PCI? and make sure no drivers for the internal vid card are left in the system after changing to the ATI card. could be a confict between the two. S
