    dead HD?

Well... Tried it. It can't find the OS, so it just goes to the repair consol.... typing in FIXMBR does nothing, just returns to the C: prompt with no response. But I can hear the hard drive clicking, transferring data. is there another way to fix the MBR or file allocation tables?

I will try that, sounds like it might work. Thanks...

ECS K7S5A, onoly one drive per IDE channel!?!? WTF!?!

Yes, it is on autodetect. And it only detects one drive, if two are in, it detects none. Per IDE port... It doesnt detect my CD drives either!!! They used to work, not it won't show up... Sounds like the manufactures problem here... Any solutions?

Quote: Well, one lousy NIC can throw the whole show into the can... it can & does happen! A way to eliminate that is to pull the nodes one by one & have them logon while that particular person is NOT online, & see if you still drag once you have gone thru them all eliminating the "bad-seed" in the mix! (Yes... a hassle!) That seems kind of weird, but will check into it. It would be a pain in the ass but I'll see what I can do. Maybe there is a diagnostic program I can use on the NICs. Quote: Ok... by software, do you mean like a new driver update gone bad for some of that equipment, or possibly a Windows Update that hosed it? OR, something a user installed into the mix that affects your whole LAN there?? Ummm, no, I don't think so. I don't know. I think it has something to do with Windows. I don't understand, but I have a preminition it is software based problem, but I could be wrong. I'll see if I can figure something out. Quote: You sure that switch is running 100% still? Could be it's on its way out... that does happen too! Something to test... Like I mentioned in the beginning, I tried one of my 100 MBPS full switch that I know works fine, I noticed no performance increase from a 10 MBPS hub to a 100 MBPS switch. That shows something is weird. Quote: You're probably right about that, it's bouncing all over the place & broadcasts not in a "shaped-charge" type wave (shaped by conical device/shield) but more like a ripple on a pond I'd imagine, circularly/spherically outwards from the center broadcasting point! That seems logical and I'm pretty sure thats what is happening. But I have not really noticed much degration or failures in the signal, it's just slow which is expected. Well I will of course try these things and options and see what I can do. Thanks very much for all your help. If you get any other ideas please tell me. I hope to get this resolved. Thanks a bunch...

Yes I beleive the HUBs are switched. This is why I don't think the problem is hardware related. I think it is software. This problem never used to exist, until recently and it has been getting worse over time. Yet I don't see how a 10 MB or less profile can take 20 minutes to be transferred! That is insanely slow! But all the problems i am talking about are on one side of the wireless link, so it's all happening in the HUB. None of that data should be going over to the other building. So I DO NOT think the slowdown has ANYTHING to do with the wireless part of the network. Also you mentioned possible interference. Yes, this is quite possible. I'm sure there is some, but the link seems quite stable for the distance it has, and objects in the way. For example, a tree. Don't ask how it is getting through the tree, the signal could be bouncing off houses and streets and cars and such in the neighborhood. I will see if I can take some pictures to show you this setup, it's quite interesting. As for hackers, it's possible, but I doubt it. The data is encrypted at 64 bits I believe. Not impossible to crack, but I don't think anyone would care to spend the time to crack this, all data travelling over that link is useless to anyone anyway. It's just internet and stuff. I will try some network tools, can you suggest any? We do not have any XP machines here, so the TM will not be possible in this case. I'm pretty sure this problem is software oriented. Can anyone think of any other ideas to fix this. I can't seem to find the problem.

I will now explain the network setup the best I can... It would be eaiser to draw it... heh, maybe i'll draw it and scan it then show you guys. But for now: This is a very interesting, and simple network. We have two buildings, the buildings are approx 175-200 meters apart. It would be VERY impractical to setup any wire-to-wire comm. for this, and very expensive. So we have setup a wireless bridge. 2 access points, with two 14 dB gain antennas pointing at each other from each building. This connection has been up nearly 8 months so far, and problems have been very minimal (simple, mediocure things like someone unplugging the WAP). In one the building, we have 6 computers connected to a HUB, that runs at 10MBPS. And obviously a cable going to the WAP on this side of the building. In the other building, we have 8 computers (soon to be MANY more) and a DSL connection via a Cisco modem/router. The WAP on this side goes to a HUB, where a connection to 3 other computers is, another HUB, and obviously the WAP and DSL connection. The connected HUB, hasa 5 computers connected to it. All HUBs are HP-brand and are 10 mbps. If I remember correctly, they say something like "switched" on them or something... Which confuses me really, heh. I will confirm that later. Anyway, that is the setup. I hope this helps. Thanks for all the help guys.

Quote: DosFreak brings up an EXCELLENT point: Hardware... it's TOO easy for us most of the time to get caught-up in software-centric viewpoints only! (I often do!) Network Packets Collisions may be an issue here as well as his mention of the size of the profile data. I have checked and considered this area as well to a basic degree. I tried of one of my 100MPBP switches from home to see if that would make things move faster. It didn't. Right now, we are using a switched HUB, I think... something like that, its a large, 24-port 10mbps HP-brand HUB. Only 6 computers ara connected to it with the exception of the other side of the network which contains a DSL connection. At the end of this, I will explain the network setup. Quote: QUESTIONS: 1.) Do you have any means of checking if your network is "healthy"? (Because a bad NIC in the mix can mess things up ROYALLY... for the WHOLE segment it's on in fact) Not really, what is the best way to do this? I'm pretty sure that all comptuers cannot have a bad NIC. But one, maybe. How do I go about checking these things? Quote: 2.) Hubs or Switches in use over there?? HUBs, all HP-brand. All 24-port. Quote: 3.) How many nodes as well??? On this segment, the only segment, approx. 85 nodes exist, while only 25 (approx.) are in use. Quote: 4.) Are all nodes there on the same segment & what-not as well???? Yes, all nodes are on the same network segment. Quote: If everyone's on the same segment, and there is say (I have had this happen) a person doing Access programming or VB programming using JET, & his program does ALOT of querying for data, it can HOSE the performance of the entire segment. I have talked to all staff members, no one is running any such program. There are no performance issues on the network, except for the typical, and expected performance of an 10mbps connection. The only problem, is this. Quote: APK P.S.=> Yes, more to look into, & I for one need more data from you if those possibilties have been exhausted at this point from above, they have often helped (especially using LMHOSTS stuff as I have seen Clutch bail alot of folks out of jams with)... this almost sounds network hardware related at this point! apk thanks for all your help so far, hopfully we can resolve this!!

The profiles are each under 10 MB. It should NOT take 20 minutes for even the 10 MBPS connection to download that. Something is wrong... What do you mean by the NIC settings being correct? Can you explain in more detail please? And what do you mean by length specs? The Cat5 cable length? I know it cannot exceed 100 meters, and it is not. The longest cable in this room is probably only 20 meters long. I don't know what that is in english I don't use english units. Thanks

Win2k Clients, Win2k Server, Roaming Profiles, SLOW LOGIN!!!

I tried a few of those things that sort of fit the subject and they did not work... My problem is NOT viewing sharred files or connections. It is simply logging in on a Win2k client, which is connected to a domain, on a win2k server. There are shares on the server, but that is it. I don't see what could be causing this to go so slow!!! There has to be something to fix this... Any other ideas?

Delta Force, VIA chipset, SYSDUMP error! Ahhhh

Does anyone else have any information? I have tried a ton of stuff and still cannot resolve this problem. A flying PC is about to be born soon. Ever see a PC fly at over 500 Kph?

Delta Force, VIA chipset, SYSDUMP error! Ahhhh

It's Delta Force Sysdump.txt error. The game freezes, a window pops up saying "sysdump.txt" with an OK button. Then you click OK and it goes back to the desktop. It doesn't matter if I just start the game after a fresh boot, cold or warm. Or if I've been on the same windows session for days, it still does this error. It's quite random too. I can sometimes start the game and it will play for several minutes before it dies. Sometimes it does it seconds after I just got in. It's very annoying. It does it on certain maps, a very select few, it does not. I am not using any custom maps, or trainers. The only thing I'm using is a No CD patch and it doesn't seem to make a difference if I've using the patch or not. This problem, according to NVidia, is also occurs a lot more on systems with a VIA and AMD chipset. It also states that the problem is often between Direct X and your hardware. Therefor suggesting a driver problem. So I have been franctically trying new drivers. But I cannot seem to find a stable set/combo. I will go and look for that MS update. Maybe that wil help. Thanks for the help, if anyone else has any suggestions or knows how to fix this please let me know.

    xcopy - doesn't work properly

Cool. I just got back from work, and tested it out. Seems to be quite a handly little utility. I don't know why I never used it. I've always seen it, but never used it cause I assumed it sucked like the Win98 one. I will change that setting so the drive will stay connected the time I need. As for the tape drive. Well, they are quite expensive. Right now they do not have the budget to even get a new scanner for $150. So for now we have to make do with what we have. Thanks for the help.

    xcopy - doesn't work properly

wow! thats for all the help guys i will do this when i get to work... judging by the overall opinion of this NTBackup, it has a GUI? That'd be nice. About the backup, maybe the Y:\ drive is not there. I mean, it is, but it gets "disconnected" according to explorer, even though if you double-click it it goes to it. The tihng is, drive Y:\ is a wireless connection to another HD on another Server in another building. The wireless network is bridged, with 14dB gain antennas on 2 WAPs about 150 meters apart. Seems to work well. We are sharring a DSL line at one end, this way, we only have to pay for one DSL, and the networks can be connected as one. Pretty sweet setup. Unfortinatly, I think the connection only goes about 1.5 Mbps max. Most of the time, it feels like around 800Kbps. Anyway I will try that NTBackup and see if it will work out. Sounds impressive, I don't know why I never saw that. I"m assuming its the regular backup prog that comes with Win2k Server? Thanks for all the help guys, very much appreciated.

    xcopy - doesn't work properly

thanks for the response... i don't get any errors at all, it simply, executes the file, and nothing happens. when i run it manually, same thing. i haven't tried typign it into the command line lately, i will try that again. ntbackup... is it automated? or can it be? i just need regular nightly backups of data onto a remote server... thats all, very simple. i haven't tried other tools, nor have i looked because i am quite lazy. lol, sorry, but its the truth. some admin i am huh? heh... thanks for your help
  15. Arrgghhh... this is pissing me off. I'm using Win2k Server and IIS to host a web site... And I have used IIS before and know how to use it. But for some reason my my Win2k machine when ever I got to my website I get a "File not found" 404 error... BUT THE FILE IS THERE!!! WTF... Does anyone know what is wrong or can suggest some things to try! I have looked over EVERYTHING I can think of... Maybe I am skipping something unconciously but its really pissing me off. Any help would be appreciated! Thx...

IIS... file there on webserver, but "File not found&quo

Well I had already reinstalled IIS... but its no big deal since the config was basic at best. I never really used the logs so I never knew where they were. But IIS is working now, I think I may have had a few other things installed that may have been causing the problem. But they're gone now. Now I finally got IIS running the way I want with PHP and working with MySQL so everything is great now. Thanks for the help.

IIS... file there on webserver, but "File not found&quo

Clutch, thank you so much for responding! I just checked these: NTFS permissions: fine, everyone has read, I have all permissions file extensions: all files, html, jpg, what ever... none will work, it just says "file not found" when you try to go to the site, or a specific location. Security Util: I was ussing IISLockdown, I ran it again to undo the settings, it had an effect, the error slightly changed, but still the same problem. URLScan, I don't believe that is installed. Logs: How do I get to the logs? I looked in IIS, didn't see them (maybe i'm blind?), also looked in the event viewer. Found no errors but some information for IISCTLS, what ever that is... I believe these 4 "infos" were made when I did an "undo" on IISLockdown. I am going to try to uninstall IIS, and the reinstall it.

    Data recovery on fried HD

I've lost a Maxtor before too, I thought it was the I/O board and I was right... I did that exact same thing by getting another one and exchanging I/O boards... Worked fine. Then I got my data, then put the board back on the new HD, and returned it... LOL I will NEVER buy another Maxtor drive again. I have had 6 die on me... All because of power failures, which is pretty lame if you ask me. Whats so important on that drive anyway...? Don't wanna loose that 25GB of pr0n you downloaded. J/K of course. Well the $700 is a bit low from what I've seen... Funny story though, I had a client of mine who's HD died and they absolutly had to have the data, they spend $1400 to get 13.4MB recovered... LOL sad story. But apparently it was that crucial to them. I am still in contact with that client too, and she backs up her data EVERY DAY now lol... I don't blame her, its not that much data anyway. Good luck dude
  21. I don't think theres much of a difference... I used Win2k when it came out for about a year and a half, then when XP came out I got that and have been using it now for almost a year... I do lots of internet, and lots of games... I never seemed to have very many problems with either. They both work quite well. I guess most of the time its just a matter of opinion. Which ever you like better I'd go with. Good luck.
  22. I have a WD 100GB hard drive. And in Win2k Server it is only showing up as 93.2GB hard drive... If I recall i think there is a way to get the full capacity I just don't remember. Can someone please tell me how to do it and what is involved? Thanks.

100GB HD, only getting 93GB... Help please.

Oh.... Damn! I was hoping for a few extra GBs... I need it! LOL I should go buy a few of those 200GB drives. Still not enough though. Thanks for da help!

100GB HD, only getting 93GB... Help please.

Hmmm I swear though somewhere I read on WDs site about getting the "full potential" of your HD... But I can't find it there anymore. I think this meant some sort of application or something to allow you to access the full capacity of the drive. I could be wrong but I'd like to know...
