Thanx Bursar, but how did you found this values ? It is very close but not exactly the same I think... I take it nevertheless, if no updates.

What about the French one ? Any date, except 'soon'? -
which file system is more efficient for windows, NTFS or FAT
Ant -|- One replied to shassouneh's topic in Customization & Tweaking
NTFS5 (win2k) is well known for being more stable, secure and, so it seems, faster. That's all I know about this, my win2k is on ntfs5 and I've never had any hdd problem nor corrupted or lost files, so far. -
Why not, be careful though with the temp because it will get higher, at least a big little (10° or more, athlon & duron are quite hot !). Good luck !
-
I think there's no real danger, as long as both cpu and ram are 133 FSB, the pci's and agp bus should support it (no prob. for the video card).

Why not format FAT32 the target partition under Win2K, simply ? -
I don't agree with you Bobbinbrisco, AVP does not take much ressources on any machine I run at work nor on mine at home, my pc behaves as if AVP wasn't doing its job, just as if because, AVP does work all the time !! Another point: you can't delete a file (it occured for me with e-mails)? Just disable the protection for a second and do what you think is correct, or open a command line and do the same the old way... That's all folks !...
-
Why not try, and buy, AVP (Kaspersky Labs), it is the best for me, particularly with emergency floppies (the first floppy is an image of a Linux system, thus running it afterwards) to eradicate viruses already at work on a given machine, also a perfect "alltime / any file activity" watcher !!! And in my opinion not very demanding as for the ressources as a service; but very cpu intensive and heating when hdd scanning, I must mention, but does anyone has to do anything else while scanning ? That's the question.

Thanx Pmistry, what you wrote might do the trick for me, logical it is ! But do we know if all the goodies in DX8.1 for win 9x are the very same for win2k, that I may doubt... tell that I am wrong ?
-
I know that when you install NAV (not corporate...) is asks you wether you want your e-mail accounts protected or not (OE Express, I don't use any other) and indeed changes the pop and smtp addresses in the accounts' settings. Hope this helps...

Finally figured out how to get the startbutton to say someth

Is possible for win2k ? The same way ??? Thanks ! -
It might depend on the os you're running the connection with... Does anyone know why dx8.1 is so much lighter for win2k than win9x ?
-
Yep, I do agree with Uykucu, what's the point to crash one's own machine just for the fun of it, there's something I don't really understand ?... Or, are we talking of some kind of a bug you can perform at will ?

In my opinion you should go for Win2k pro as there are quite a lot of probs with XP for the time being... no problem of incompatibilities for me so far, all of my games work just fine (the lasts being MaxPayne, Undying, Severance-Blade of Darkness...). I'm just waiting to upgrade my video to a Radeon 7500 (for the price/perf level) and maybe a new cpu (what about a real P/// 900 I could boost higher...). So, Win2k is my choice, but do consider what Clutch said about the backward licence until XP is stable... Bye !

Nothing new nor original but Happy Birthday to YOU Brian, and thank you for what you're doing for us in this forum !

Hi, I personally have the SD-M 1212 for quite some time now, and it is udma2. It works fine for me except that the bios does not detect the drive at once, I have to enter/exit the bios to see the drive detected... that is if I want a "normal" boot, because even though the drive is not detected by the bios, win2k picks it up and it just works fine, just as if the bios had seen it. Brian Frank, one of the most active in there told me once that Win2k does not rely on the bios as to determine wether there is a drive or not, it just finds it and activate it if there is one working in the system. Amazing how things work...

Any Good Cloning/Image Software ?
Ant -|- One replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Hi, I personally use Symantec Ghost, and I must say it works like a charm ! You can even image a hdd that has bad clusters and you will obtain something clean on the new hdd, providing there wasn't any crucial data on the bad blocks. To burn your image on a cd can be performed with Ghost, though I haven't tried because I don't have a burner. So, go for it ! Whatever soft you want to use, it can save you hours and hours of reinstallation and settings... Good luck and keep us informed ! -
Who said "Do not double-post, please !" Choose your section and just post, that's that simple. As for your problem, sorry but I don't have any idea...

Defense of Via chipsets (or Via doesn't suck)
Ant -|- One replied to Brian Frank's topic in Slack Space
Hi, there! Just wondering about something I read in the above posts. Does anyone know of any compatibility issues between my mobo (Asus P3V4X, 694x_chipset) and Ati's Radeon vid cards (including the 7500 yet to be available in France) ? I'm currently using the Rage128ProViVo without any problem except I can't play every games I have at 1600*1200... That's why I planned to get the Radeon64DDR... My former choice is now out of the question, I'll get the Radeon 7500 instead since it is a revised and boosted version of the R64DDR. I'm really faithfull to Ati since the RagePro (RagePro, Rage128TvOut, Rage128ProViVo,... and soon the Radeon 7500) So, the question is: Do any of you knows of any bad issues ? Thanx for any response ! -
UNDYING works fine under Win2kPro !!!!!!!!!!!!!! But as for Win2kServer...

Hi, there's something I don't understand: at whatever speed I set my CPU -a P///650E- from 650 (original) to 911 (fsb140) I see the temps jumping up and down when idle from 37° to 46° while just browsing, no heavy apps running... AND while playing heavy 3D games it jumps to 50-65° running at its original speed or @728/806/866/911... The mobo temp reading is lying (whatever prog I use to see temps under win2k). I know the P3V4X is known for this problem, but has anyone an idea as to clear the situation and set my mind at ease (I don't want to burn my CPU!) ???????????? According to what I've just said, should I worry or not ? Thanx !
-
You lost what ? Aren't they just disabled in the bios ? Did you reset the bios to its default ?
-
I thank you all, but has anyone any solution to get the real temps? Considering the ups and downs are the same whatever speed I set the Cpu speed at, what am I supposed to think about all this ???? BTW even @911 my P///650ESlot1 does not crash win2k or any apps, I just have concern about the temps... Weird, no ?

Help !!!!!!!!!!!!! When I check mail, I get the error message saying Msimn.exe has generated an error and will be shut down, you should restart the program. That's what I do, and at the very moment I click on the Send/Check messages button, the box pops up and the program is shut down after a few seconds once again. I know that a process crashed (sinchronising my Hotmail acount) but I don't think is is really related because, a few months ago, I started to use EudoraPro instead of OE for the very same kind of problem. The sole difference is that I updated IE & OE to ver. 6. IE does not crash anymore (for the time being). What could cause all this mess ? SBLive drivers are quite the latest ; I didn't installed the very last published on NTCompatible News Page, don't really think this the cause... ? HELP please !

No, I've not yet tried to reinstall nor repair IE6 & OE6. I had the very same problem with IE5.5 & OE5. But I've just tried another solution I found through Google search that consists in finding multiple occurences of winsock.dll and wsock32.dll and rename any extra ones in .old, leaving just one copy in the WINNT\System32 folder. It might have done the trick... I'll post again if it happens again. Thank you very much !
