Just bought a Radeon 9700 Pro....

You keep saying how much better the Radeon is, and i agree, but like i said you have very low points for such a card. I use no tweaks apart from upping my cpu and that gives me a small amount of points. I find it hard to belive that you went from 2.26 up to 2.53 and got that much of an improvement in points, even with dx9 and new drivers. Anyway all i was suggesting at first was for you to look at your system because you had a low score for that system. I was gonna go for this card myself until i saw its problems with some games, like displaying bad textures in UT2003 and also a mate of mine bought an 8500 radeon and he doesnt like it, so i stayed away. Maybe they have changed but i need proof before i jump the boat. I jumped over to my P4 because the Intel chips are so much cheaper now than they were and i thought i would give them a go, but the radeon still seems to have problems and at nearly 50% extra cost of the GF4 Ti4600 i didnt think it was worth it

Quote: How do you figure that a Radeon 9700 is clocked "so much higher than the Ti4600"?. Here are the numbers: Radeon 9700 Pro: GPU clock- 325Mhz Memory clock- 620 Mhz GeForce Ti4600: GPU clock- 300Mhz Memory clock- 650Mhz 25Mhz is not "so much higher in my book". The memory is clocked 30 Mhz higher on your Ti4600 also. It's not the clock speed of the GPU or the memory that make this card stand out....it's the technology behind it. For example.....How does a AMD XP 2000+ outperform a Pentium 4 2GHZ?....Is it the clock speed?. Certainly not with the XP 2000 being clocked at 1.667Ghz. It's the underlying technology. Happy Holidays everyone!!.... Any ideas why the Radeon 9700 is more expensive than the 4600 then, everyones system that has this card outruns my system, 3dmark scores for frame rates and quality. Obviously you arent getting what you should from this card. You also said 25mhz isnt much higher, but it is still higher and this card has better technology and has 8pipe lines rather than 4 on the GF4. I am getting 600 points more which is a lot more. If i clock my CPU back to 2.53 i still get 12712 points. You also said that an xp 2000+ outperforms a 2ghz P4, does this mean you are suggesting that the GF4 outperforms the Radeon, in this case everyone should save there money and go for the faster Gf4

Quote: This card is nothing short of AWESOME!!!. The speed and image quality is INCREDIBLE!!. I have been an Nvidia user for a long time and was hesitant about buying this card. Nevertheless, I am very surprised at the speed this thing possesses. My 3DMark went from 8000 to 12249!!. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking to upgrade...... If you look in my profile you will see my 3dmark, i aint saying anything bad about the card but i aint impressed with that score for a 9700 radeon on your system. RAM and processor give next nothing for 3dmarks, especially with a radeon being so much higher clock rates than the Ti4600 (mine is at stock speeds) i would of expected much higher than what i have

    ECS K7S5A Mobo

Hi guyz, i have had this mobo for sometime but yet only had it running for about a month or two until i got my P4. The mobo had problems then but it wasnt too bad really, now it has reappeared and is extremely bad. When i restart or even turn the comp on after a shutdown, it does not boot up at all. It doesnt beep, but what it seems to be doing is keep reseting itself, like every 5-7 secs the cdrom lights start to flash and hard drives restart spinning up. Then i can turn the comp off, leave it for a couple of secs, turn it back on and it either does the same or starts up, it has been on 2 PSU's which somebody suggested it might be that, but i find it hard to believe it wont like both. This is very annoying and i dont want to update the BIOS because i am scared that it may not boot back up which may brake it completely or would this not be an issue if it didnt start up again? Plus replacing the board is going to cost £70 and thats far too much to spend. Anyone any ideas on what it could be?

Quote: Quote: Yes i sit and do this till it turns on You don't list what PSU you're using in your sig - from what I've read, & given your symptoms, it wouldn't hurt to see if you can borrow another PSU from somebody & try that with it, or failing that try stripping your system down to the bare minimum [no drives, 1 stick of RAM, etc] & see if it still has the same prob. If you do that & it doesn't, try adding 1 device @ a time. If the problem reappears after a specific piece of hardware is added, then try leaving that out & adding everything else. If you can do that with no probs then it's that 1 piece of hardware - either the device itself is faulty, or it's just too hungry for your PSU. If the prob reappears with multiple combinations of hardware, but not the bare minimum then I would be inclined to suspect the PSU. I have tryed a 400watt Dual fan PSU, a single fan 400watt PSU, and a 300Watt PSU. It doesnt change a thing with any of them. It is using the 400watt dual fan now as it is noisy and i wont have it on my P4 coz of its noise. I will try taking things out tonight, i dont think it will be any hardware because i have ran all of it on my old gigabyte ga7dxr+ board which stopped working . Oh and merry christmas
  7. Anyone running Lindows at all?? I am wondering how it compares to standard linux and if it can run much Win32 software?

Quote: Marktait - just a hunch - have U tried turning it on, waiting for it to do it's usual nothing with occasional flashing of drive LEDs then hit reset? Yes i sit and do this till it turns on , i updated the BIOS and this did not help at all. I think il be staying away from ECS in future, not just because of this but because you cant even upgrade your BIOS in windows. If you ask me, booting into dos and running your BIOS update from a floppy is dodgy stuff as floppy disks are very weird at times and cant read very well.

Lindows 3.0 Anyone running it on their system?

Right, OK. Some great input there.

Quote: Hello Mark .... I have almost the identical same system you do with the identical same problem. Hit the power button and .... nothing, except the disk and DVD led flash every once in a while. I was wandering the Internet and saw your post. I now realize I don't have a broken mobo [its only a month old]. We have to be dealing with a BIOS bug. So I went to www.ecs.com.tw and search their support FAQ. Sure enough, this problem is there with a BIOS update proven to fix this problem. Go to: ftp://ftp.ecs.com.tw/bios/k7s5a021001.exe I wouldn't worry too much about losing any data on your hard drive if the BIOS update screws up. This may leave your mobo upable to boot, but all the HD data is untouched. Just read and totally understand the instructions before you do the update, follow them to the letter, and you shouldn't have any problems. I've done FLASH updates for years without problems ... all you have to do is leave it alone while its up[censored] ... and hope you don't take a power hit while its working. Your a life saver man, thanxs

ASUS A7M266-D with WinXP unstable to the maxx.

Secondly take out all cards apart from the vid card and 1 card of ram and boot it with the minimum, see if you can run it then without a problem, if it runs ok then add a card each time. If not then check your cpu temps and make sure all hardware is seated nicely.
  13. Quote: Got my ECS K7S5A and Athlon XP 1700+ today Have u tried running that board yet, as i am having probs with mine and may have a feeling that its to do with the XP chips, maybe BIOS needs upgrade. Let me know if u get probs starting up sometimes. Cheers

    Is this strange??

I bought 2x 80GB Western digital Caviar SE 8MB Drives and put them on a raid controller on IDE1 (Striping), i then put my 80GB IBM on IDE2 (Striping) on the controller by itself. I thought it would be faster to copy files around on the caviar drives but if i copy a 550MB file from my IBM -> WD drive it takes about 10seconds but if i copy from WD -> WD seperate partitions it takes more than double the time. Then if i copy the file back to the IBM drive it takes about 10seconds again :x Any ideas or is this normal??
  16. Marktait

    Is this strange??

Yeah i knew they worked like that, i was just wondeirng with it being 2 drives phisically but 1 drive to windows due to striping, so i thought it wud be faster as i wud be copying from 1 hdd to another really.

    Problems with ATA100 RAID Controller

Quote: It is a known issue that Seagate harddrives works like shit in RAID. U cant fix it. Its something with the firmware in the seagate harddrives and seagate themselfs have been unable to solve it. good job i didnt get 2 seagate drives then, i nearly did coz they were going really cheap. glad i got the WD, amazing speed. Striped raid and i can copy 271mb file in 3seconds to my IBM 80GB also on the raid controller on IDE2. Raid is fantastic
