THE OFFICAL Windows 2000 vs Windows XP Thread

Oh Boy, here we go again.... I vote for Windows 3.11 working over Dos 5.0 or maybe 6.0 Definetely not 6.22 or anything never. There are just too many driver problems with the new HW.

Ultra-Violet Cold Cathode or Neon Light

What is this a new sign for your peep-show or your kwik a mart??? This is a computer you are talking about. I am all for mods (i sell computers in any colour they want etc.) but there is such a thing as overdoing it in my opinion.

    Formating / Reinstalling Frequency

Yes it does.... I had a cct breaker and a UPS protecting the comps however i think it was the emp getting through which i could not do aqnything about. This is life. I am happy i could get away with approx. $300 damage. It could have been a monstrous loss if something happened to my HDD's

What about sending an e-mail to the forum users about the chat room? I saw it by accident while browsing the forums today. And i am here nearly everyday Oh let me guess in 2 weeks time

Quote: Yeah, I have heard of IRC. I do not want to download it because of spyware. I just thought that they would have one that you could just go on like they do at www.tweakxp.com . And, NO this is not my first comp. I have had plenty of comps. before, for your information. I have Internet Explorer and Windows Messenger, ICQ, MSN Explorer (I am on it right now!), and all of that other junk. I do not like the chat programs because they put that spyware crap on your computer and they slow down the comp. I have my comp. tweaked up pretty much as far as it will go. I know more about computers than what you think! I know more than what some people do. ;( I won't dignify this post with a proper reply, CUViper and Xiven said all that was necessary.

    Formating / Reinstalling Frequency

my w2k sp2 @ home was going for about 18 mths, however ıt just died on me after a lightning hit the building next door and fried my Nic's and switch. Now it doesn't boot up. Coincedentaly sp3 is just released so ıt needed a format anyway.
  8. Hi guys, first of all please no non-sense reply's... I would expect decent answers from the heavys. Config is.: P4 478 pin Asus P4 TE i850 512MB RD Ram (256+ filler on each bank) Leadtek Geforce 2 mx 32 MB Apache 56K Int. Win XP Home Rest is insignificant. Problem: When the system was built, live card was not slotted properly. Win xp installed smoothly then they noticed no sound!!! (Dough!) So they plugged the card in properly and booted, Win XP found the card, it might have installed the drivers properly no info on that. They stick the Driver CD and do a drivers only install. System boots up and finds SB Live! then returns hardware can not be installed, The data is invalid... Same thing is valid for Gameport. On the device manager the above two is listed under unknown devices, and has the same error when we tryed to reinstall drivers etc. Bios is set for pnp os, but manual config was tryed. I have replaced the card, I have even removed the PCI Bus under device manager and let it find everything again. There is no onboard audio. I have tryed the card in different slots I have taken out the modem and tryed no luck. Booted in safe mode, uninstalled the unknowns booted again. Reinstalled the creative drivers from CD. And many more As you can guess they did not work Now there is a new 25 MB driver from creative. I am going to try it today, but curious has any of you had this? It drives me nuts. I set up NT AD Networks, or ISP's from scratch and can't install a stupid sound card. Creative: 1 Cenk: 0!!!! PS, in case i can not find a solution to this problem i am preparing a mail bomb which looks like an RMA package for Creative Europe. Or it is something stupid which we overlooked and i will throw myself off a bridge. (We have two here which are 75m high)

Quote: LOL, I hope for your sake it is a 1-off. I know it is one off, since i used this board B4. they work like a charm. I have seen single or all PCI slots not working, this is the first time PCI2.1 only!

Let me guess this is your first computer and think internet consist of ICQ/messenger and IE6.... www.mirc.com download it, go to undernet network and get into the #ntcompatible channel.

Quote: Oh, & Uykucu - some mobos whilst claiming to be PCI 2.1 complient, just aren't - & it's usually all boards of same model, not just a 1-off, though I would have thought that would be very rare nowadays. A brand new Asus P4T-E with i850 and 800Mhz RDRam???? I am putting my money on a oneoff! Hell Asus Socket 7's supoort it!

Quote: EXCEPT that if the short provides a lower resistance path (as is virtually always the case) then the current will be shunted in that direction as electrons always follow the path of least resistance. And there will be no voltage as V=i*R Whole point of ground. And since the whole current will fow trough the 0 resistance, there will be no voltage at any point in a linear cct which is what that was. Only thing i can think of is a feedback from the GND. But we are running on PC here, if this was the case other mices would do the same. Anyway what does it matter... We are not in the business of designing new mices

Best soundcard for dolby digital amplifier

Yours will do fine as Admiral said. If you have to have the optical, get the SB Live 5.1 Digital. It has an optical out instead of SPDIF. Retails about USD$40-45

    Monitor Hz

Ahhhh, when are you guys going to learn. Overclocking can not create something that is not there. some limitations has been ut on HW for a reason, to protect it. I have seen melted MOBO's Graphic Cards. Result of the weakest component failing is not always it stopping to work. They do cause fires etc you know. BTW ANY and ALL benchmarks are sythetic. If you really want to compare stuff, get your assembler book out and write it yourself even 2+2 will do. number of cycles is your benchmark. But since each CPU has a different design then comparison is irrelevant since you can not compare apple with a water melon. Last thing on OC, the moment you go above the spec, you start to create errors on each process, Microprocessors or Digital electronic is unreliable on its own anyway, it does not need your messing about. This is what the ECC is there for, but above spec you start to create more errors cause you are losing process synch (actually ALU, BUS, L1, L2 cache structures are the cause.) so your CPU spends more time correcting those errors etc. And even if it was true that OC can increase the performance how much do you think it will be? Let me give you a clue. Difference between a P4 1.8 512KB and P4 2.4 512KB is less then %3... (also 2.4 is just a normal P4 same as the 1.8 they came out of the same line the silicon structure and clock connected to taht is the only difference.)

Got it, It was not the SB. It was the MOBO. Pci 2.1 devices does not work. Don't ask me why.

I just want the blummin' thing to be over and stop me having to get out of bed any ealier then usual! lol. I respect that trully as a person who used the opportunity of worldcup to avoid the traffic I was stranded once the games were over but.

Quote: You get a short circuit to ground and instantly all the current the port is capable of supplying (and possibly even more so) will be fed down the line which can easily explain what happened... Actually, If you short whatever with the ground (virtual or real) it will be grounded But hey, i saw a brand new asus board out of box, PCI2.1 is not running. Don't ask me how since i have no idea. Modems or any basic PCI works nothing PCI2.1 though. (ie 3Com Nic, SB Audigy Platinum.) Windows installs and runs just fine, only when installing drivers for any pci2.1 it comes up with the "The data is invalid" Took me a while to figure this out. And Techs, still no clue Maybe i need better ones.

    stability and reliability

We are just going in circles. We all agree it has to be done only difference is, clutch is stating and talking about the logistics of it, while i state the obvious and give a different point of view. AlecStaar, no offense intended but you are taking the moral high ground just for the sake of it in my opinion. You are involved in the computers, you should have an idea how the businesses work. We don't / can't apply democracy to business. Maybe in a charity organization or so which will be pointless. Can you imagine a board of directors calling in a vote by the employees whatever to raise their salary or whatever to close the company or not. I know those are overkill questions. Looking into the private e-mails of the employees is like tapping their mobile or home phone. Should not be done. but any e-mail under that company's domain is company property. Nobody is complaining when they install CCTV in their offices. This is not so different. if they have a private matter to discuss there always is hotmail yahoo etc, if they are broke enough not to have an isp connection. Ahh, i am bored. You guys got my point i think

Quote: Well - heres one that may be hard to beleive - and I may be ridiculed , but here it goes... Working at a tech support/high speed dealer/ service department for computers at a stationary store. I was usually on the phone about 60% of the work day, the same with my colleagues. This lady calls in, she sounds old, she doesnt know what she's doing. Probably. So anyways she starts explaining to me that her mouse is hot. Hot to the touch. I hesitate for a second and say "Hot? What do you mean?" She explains how she just turned on the computer and her mouse is hot. I dont understand, she's obviously exaggerating the truth. So, I cover the mouthpeice on the phone and say to one of my co-workers "Hey - this old lady thinks her mouse is hot" (meanwhile thinking this is ridiculous) and he turns to me and says "Is it a Trekker?" So - I entertain his question and ask her if it is a trekker. She says yes. She stops by later and we replace the mouse and I ask my co-worker how he knew that. This is where it gets iffy. Apparently, Trekker has stated somewhere that the environment in central saskatchewan is not good for their mouses. I opened it up and sure enough it was starting to melt. Now - I am still in a little disbelief about the whole thing, but there could be some truth to it, but I just boiled it down to crappy mouses. ...just thought it was an amusing anecdote. How can a mouse melt? they get 5V's and what .1 mA's This prooves it bad engineering can create miracles.

Quote: I'm curious as to how he managed to fit an RJ11 plug into an RJ45 port. Not everyone in world uses RJ11 In Turkey they use RJ something (same as states), same as the ones we plug in to the modem. there is plenty of space left afterwards, I wonder why he hasn't tried to plug another one in.

  25. You guys really have the patience to explain AD security, IIS configuration or SQL to a 16 year old who wants to impress his friends???
