    Windows 2000 Advanced Server Errors

I had the exackt same problem on my PDC. I just executed a command in CMD and the problem was gone, unfortunately I have forgotten what command I ran but if you look in the online help system I'm sure you'll find it...

    NT4 Backup Domain Controller...

I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server acting as a primary Active Directory DC, now I want to make my NT4 Server a backup DC but I can't... I install NT4 and select backup DC... then I create a computer account in Active Directory for my NT Server. But when the computer is supposed to join the domain it says that the computer account is already in use a workstation or server... Anyone knows what to do? Maybe Clutch can answer this one?

    NT4 Backup Domain Controller...

Now I got it somehow the way I want it, the NT box is in the domain as a server and is running WINS, FTP, SMTP, DNS, etc... The main DC is a K7 800, 256 Mb RAM... The NT4 box is waaay too slow for Win2k but NT4 Server is running quite fast... (P166, 64 Mb RAM, going to upgrade to 200+ soon)

    WINS server...

I'm currently on a small network setup with about 6 computers, I think the network browsing is quite slow so I have WINS server on my computer, but it only registers my computer, I'm in my own domain and all the other computers are in a second one... The other computers won't even find my WINS server at all... Anymone knows whats wrong??

    WINS server...

Yeah, the ICS have a static IP... But do you mean static IP on the LAN adapter or the Internet apapter?
  11. Marchuz^

    WINS server...

Ok, but I think I heard once that it's not necessary to enter the WINS IP manually, but that was obviously wrong... And another thing, if there is a computer with Internet connection sharing, is it necessary to have dynamic IP on the clients or is it enough to enter the IP of the ICS server as default gateway?

    WINS server...

We only have one domain and that's because my computer is running active directory, I'm at my friend's place right now and all their computers are in their own workgroup. They don't the IP of my WINS in their TCP/IP properties, but arent't they supposed to find it automatically, or is that only when they're being rebooted? Another reason may be that they have disabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP...

Whats yours expirience with IBM hard drives?

I have to agree with Silent-IQ... here in Sweden you read about alot of peple having problems with their IBM's, including me, after about one month i got about 90k in bad clusters, i fixed the problem with chkdsk and it's been running flawlessly ever since... But I have to say that IBM makes really nice disks. Fujitsu makes good disks too, I have and a MPD3173AT 17,3 Gb DMA66 drive from mid 1999 and it's been working flawlessly since the day I put in my computer...

    Win2k AS: Poor Performance

I run Windows 2000 Adv. Server on my home computer and I don't have any performance problems, it runs hust as fast as Win2k Pro on an Athlon @ 864 MHz, 256 Mb RAM... I think the reason that your computer is so slow in regular desktop applications is that Win2k Server is optimized for background services by default, to change this right click on 'My Computer' and select 'properties' and the 'Advanced' tab, then open the 'Performance' dialog. There you can change optimization mode, either applications or background services... [This message has been edited by Marchuz^ (edited 27 March 2001).]
  15. I just upgraded to Internet Explorer 5.5 Sp1, everything works just fine but when i start an explorer window with the folder-list enabled it just crashes... this is VERY disturbing... OS system size?

I guess i have the smallest Windows installation, my Winnt folder is 460Mb (!). And my Windows is NOT stripped, and I have SP1 installed, but i removed the SP1_files and the DLLCache... Works just great, and I have a bunch of apps installed... ------------------ Marchuz^ UIN: 42900735 marcus@fofso.net

  20. My swap file is 512Mb. I have 256Mb RAM and i have peaked 516Mb mem usage. I was running Photoshop, 5 Internet Explorer sessions, one Windows Explorer session, Outlook 2000, CMD, ACDSee 32 and 3D Studio MAX rendering a scene... Well, it didn't go too fast if I say so, but it was still very usable... ------------------ Marchuz^ UIN: 42900735 marcus@fofso.net

Why is my system so dope??

mello_j: It's true that the mutliplier is locked on Athlons but there are two ways to unlock it, first thing is to, just as you say to resolder some small resistors on the PCB, but thats just stupid to do, instead, buy a "GFD-card" and remove the plastic shell from the processor and attach the GFD... then you ca change the multiplier with the dip-swith on the GFD. The second alternative for overclocking your Athlon is by upping the FSB, this isn't a very good alternative since most AMD chipsets wont be stable at high bus-speeds. The absolute upper limit for the Via KX133 chipset is at about 120 Mhz. I have an Athlon 700 on a Abit KA7 mb myself that is overclocked to 800 MHz by FSB clocking (114x7). Another issue when overcloking Athlon classics is the level-2 cache, on a 700 it runs at 1/2 of the processors core speed, when overclocking you have to change the cache-divider so that the cache doesen't sun too fast, avalable cache speeds is 1/2, 2/5 and 1/3 of the processor core speed. You ca change the level-2 cache by resoldering some resistors on the PCB or in BIOS if your mb supports it, or by software like Mathlon. If you have any questions just mail me or icq me... ------------------ Marchuz^ UIN: 42900735 marcus@fofso.net

oXide: What you're saying is really true, if you have a Pentium III system, but this guy has an Athlon system, big difference... ------------------ Marchuz^ UIN: 42900735 marcus@fofso.net

  24. I'm running Win2k 100% stable on my computer at home but when I go to a LAN-party or a friends house to play some games I get random crashes or BSODs, mostly KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED or just a reboot. The problem can be solved (but not 100%) by upping the voltage for the processor. I think this depends on the powersupply but I'm not sure. My computer consumes a _lot_ of power and I think there might just not be enough power at other places but home. What I want to know is if there is not just enought power for the computer, does it even start at all or does it affect stability. ------------------ Marchuz^ UIN: 42900735 marcus@fofso.net

    Does power supply affect stability?

I already have motherboard monitor, if I remenber things right the voltages where a bit low at my friend's house... ------------------ Marchuz^ UIN: 42900735 marcus@fofso.net
