    Installation over LAN

Hey, I was wondering how you go about installing Windows XP/.NET over a LAN. I have a machine connected up (to my LAN) with only a floppy drive in, and wish to installed Windows from another computer to it. Is there a way to select this when booting up of the installion floppies? I don't think I've ever seen the option to do that before... Maybe I can run the installation program from the target machine in its current O/S, and the installation program will handle it for me? but then I figure it will copy files across, and so render my unable to format the partition when it reboots... arg. Help? lol. Ta.

    Installation over LAN

The target machine (machine 2) did have an OS previously installed, and in the end, opted for copying the i386 folder across first hand and then converting the drive to NTFS. I do intend to try and do a network boot type of installation to at a later date if posible - its a learning experience Thanks for that link clutch, and the rest of you for your much valued input.
  3. Yep. Seen a screenshot, and used it... but I still don't like it. I'm too used to Windows I guess.
  4. Yeah Admiral LSD, Mac's do have a superior interface *cough* - each to there own really. If you like, then fair play! ...and LOL @ oldspice. Sorry dude, but from what you just said it kinda sounds like you want the Mac look&feel to get this "quality" a Mac provides for sound!
  5. What I can't understand is why anyone would want their PC to look like a Mac. If you want a Mac, why not buy a Mac?
  6. Hi. After having my main PC in my room for quite awhile and putting up with the noise it generates, I had a thought about shoving it in another room and replacing all the devices that need access (CD, CD-RW, DVD, floppy) to USB ones and running a really long cable to my room where a USB hub would be. The devices I'm thinking of powering from it would consist of a KB, mouse, SB Extidy, CD, CD-RW, DVD, floppy drive, scanner and maybe a printer. Now thats quite a lot. My question, is how long can a USB cable be? and would running all this off it (USB2 btw) be feasible? Does anyone do anything like this? I really hate the idea of anything USB... but the idea seemed like a nice solution.

Quote: Only with a Mac do you find absolutely flawless integration of hardware and software. Really... and that why a friend of mine has just recently had so much trouble getting his printer to work with his Mac... hmmm. Quote: Only with a Mac do you get an operating system built by the same people who built the computer it runs on. So whens the DoJ going to combat this lil manopoly. LOL. I could go on and poke holes at a lot more on there... Oh just one more!! "It's beautiful" - give me a break! Urgh! If I wanted a computer that looked like a, well, Mac, I'd buy a Mac LOL.

USB 2/Devices: How good are they?

Well the bandwidth was one of the things that I was looking at. I've not seen any USB2 card that can deliver the full rate/port yet, which sucks. Thanks though.

USB 2/Devices: How good are they?

Well the noise would always be there, whatever the level of it... any the idea is also to make more space too.

    win xp pro

Dude, its the same fricken O/S. If games work on Home, they'll work on Professional.

    win xp pro

Well if you had an /illegal/ key and were worried about your copy being deactivated as such, then you might go out and buy the cheapest copy you could find to replace it with (e.g. XP Home). Afaik, you have to do a complete reinstall to go back to a lesser version.

    Fan positioning for proper cooling

You should really have more air coming in, then out though.. otherwise the air won't beable to circulate within the case.

    Computer Locks when defragging files

Why don't you check your drives for errors one at a time (or rather defrag them one at a time), and see which one it locks up on?
  19. Hmm when I click open, or explore after right-clicking on an item in my Start Menu, it brings up the Move Items dialog box - something thats been bugging me for a while but I live with it.

    Venting here

DirectX maybe. ActiveX are what replaced VBXs in VB (Visual Basic).

    System Lock-ups.

A friend of mine has just bought themselfs a new Athlon XP system, but it keeps locking up (no BSoDs, no resets). I don't know the full spec. of the machine itself, but am I right in thinking that machines only lock-up like that when they overheat? I mean a driver or power issue would cause it to BSoD or reset, right? TIA.

    System Lock-ups.

Quote: ANd it is necesarry to use the 4 in 1 drivers. I don't mean to bite the hand thats feeding me here (so-to-speak), but its not. I haven't on my system and it runs great. Everytime I've ever installed those drivers (versions ranging from 0.28->0.31 I think) I had various crashses. They're worthless if you ask me. No other motherboard make has this kinda of thing, why does VIA? To me its either a gimmick or some kinda of selling point that just doesn't pay off. Anyone else care to put their point-of-view across about VIAs 4in1s?

    System Lock-ups.

heh well it is a VIA chipset - Epox 8K7A+. In my experience, the 4in1 drivers do more harm then good. I personaly don't install them on any VIA system that I have anymore. As for my friends system, he reset the BIOS it default settings the other night and lowered the CPU (it wasnt o/c before, but it is u/c now) and so far its been stable. I don't have a full spec., but this is what I do know: - Epox 8K7A+, Athlon 1800XP, GeForce 4 Pro 600 64MB Gold, Siler Mountain HSF, Maxtor 80GB 7200, 512MB DDR KINGSTON x2, CD Drive, DVD Drive, CD-RW, 10/100 NIC, Creative SB 5.1, 300watt PSU. It also seems to run fine either at the shop he bought it, or downstairs. That led him to believe it could have been heat (his room is hot) or a power instability as its plugged into a 10-plug adaptor. Thats all for now.

will it ever be possible to...

There used to be an option to accelerate the movement of your mouse, the longer you moved it for. I believe this is the option that harlekin was talking about that doesn't appear under Windows XP.
