  1. File and mail server for 98/XP based network

    1. Synchronize Client Folders to Server Folders. Clients work with files on their machine while the Server keeps record and makes all updated changes on the Server folder. ie. Clients can open and work on a Word document on their pc and when they save the file locally, the server picks it up and saves a copy on the Server, sorta backup protection. The client pc folders are not accessible over the network (workgroup) and only the Server has direct access to clients (no peer to peer connections) all domain users must access the server for the files, any updates on the server files is automatically updated on the originating clients folder as well.

    2. Mail storage. The server holds all domain users mail accounts and automatically downloads mails. The clients log onto the server to check and download their emails. Trying to cut down on bandwith usage where some clients are accessing the same accounts and have to download from the net each time.

  2. does anybody know any way i can get power from the motherboard or power supply without having to turn on the computer?

what i have done is added 2 usb lights in the case(i got tired of having to use a flash light everytime i mess around with the pc)but it's kinda pointless cause i have to turn on the pc to have the lights on which defeats the purpose, i don't want to have another seperate powersupply either.

well, if anyone has done something similiar, please let me know.

Thanks for the info. From what I read about those cards, they only mentioned playback (or de-coding). I don't really have a problem with that. The part I'm wondering is the encoding part. It takes me about 15-20 minutes to encode a *.vob track (or a dvd track of a song) to mpeg1/2 format. It took me over 6hrs to encode The Eagles DVD to VCD format! I want something that'll make it go faster so I was wondering if the new generation mpeg cards would help. Again, it's the encoding that I'm after.

    Thanks

btw, I'm running a Athlon 1G T-Bird with 256mb ram (the other 256stick burnt out frown ) And I just spent $450 on a 17" LCD monitor so I'm running out of cash to spend (though it's a sweet wide screen 16:9 LCD smile ) and about $80 for a tv card & keyboard. More of a appearance upgrade than a performance upgrade, vanity, I'm guilty as charged :P

*edit* forgot to mention the DVD Burner I just bought as well for $100. So that's a total of $630 already spent. I'm not looking forward to adding another $600 for the upgrade frown

  5. thanks for the feedback guys.

man, from what you guys are all advising, it's gonna cost a bit to upgrade.

i hate it that even though i'm in taiwan, prices are still so high as compared to the states.

I have done some price checks and basically the P4 and the 64bit Athlons are the same price. about a $60 difference. This is with 512MBDDR 400, SATA 120GB HD. But it's gonna be in the price range of $580~$650 for the upgrade. That's more than my budget is allowing me to spend.

I wonder if I could get away with just buying a mpeg card?? I have never bought one but would it get the job done? Do these cards actually improve encoding/decoding times?? It would be a much cheaper alternative and I could spend the money on a larger HD and a stick of ram (pc133 shocked ) though I am against buying a stick of ram that will be usless if I decide to upgrade later on.

  6. thanks for the feedback smile , I have been doing some research and noticed though that the celeron's weren't up to par. I mean, I'd rather opt for an athlon xp than a celeron since price wise, they are about the same but performance is better with the athlon. I'll be doing some heavy DV editing soon so I'll need a cp that'll be able to cut down some time. If I had the money, I'd go for for top notch with scsi hd's, but times are rough these days. With me married now and a new baby coming in July (the reason for the DV editing part). Well, atleast I have a couple more months and hopefully after Comdex in June, prices will come down.

man, what happened to ntcompatible?? after 100+ views, only one reply? frown

  7. Hey guys, it's been a while since I visited this site. I hope this topic doesn't start a flame war.

After finally getting a DVD burner and doing some encoding, it was a painful experience which tells me it's about time for an upgrade.

How are the Athlon XP's? Are they stable? Do they have heat related issues?? (summer is coming soon!) I'd rather opt for Intel this time around, but the prices are so ridiculous.

Welp, thanks for reading and would appreciate any replies!

  8. ok, well, it's been over a month now and still can't get that partition recovered ;( , was using easy recovery which proved it isn't as easy as stated.

well..i decided to give active partition recovery a shot today which required me to boot from a 98 boot disk, here's the funny thing, under dos, my partition showed up! 8) all the files were there so i copied some of it over to a new partition and booted up windows and yup, files loaded up! so it's xp that's screwing it up.

now here's the dilema, if i use dos and xcopy the files over, all the filenames will be messed up since it doesn't support long file names..so what do you guys suggest? is there any way of copying the files while still keeping the long file names? ;(

  9. thanks guys, i had intended on using another software but i'm now giving East Recovery a shot.

dunno if i'm doing it right, i just installed it and then went to the 'advanced recovery' and selected the damaged partition and clicked 'next', it started scanning the partition and it's finding files and directories so i'm sure i'm doing it right..but man, it looks like it'll be a while, 9-10 hrs to scan 9.5gb space.

well..if i'm not doing it right please let me know.

  10. Today for some reason I felt that I should do some de-fragging on my HD, haven't done it in a while. After completing the defrag, and while I was working on something else, a notice popped up saying that my OE had an error. I thought nothing of it, but when I tried to open up OE again, it would crash out instantly.

First I guess I should mention that I only have 1 45gb drive partitioned into 3 parts, 2 of the partitions are used for WinXP while the 3rd partition is used for linux.

I had only defragged one of the XP partition, the one where I keep ALL my data, that's when the OE error popped up cause that's where I store all my folders and accounts. I tried to defrag the main XP partition but it wouldn't let me. So I rebooted my pc to see if that would fix something up.

Well, it wouldn't boot. I tried everything and ended up using the cd and recovery console. I did a chkdsk and everything was fine, I did a deep scan and it was fine, but neither allowed me to boot up, so I ended up doing a repair just in case. That took a while but eventually it allowed me to boot up.

The problem now is that the Data partition is now completely EMPTY! It shows up as an unformatted partition! Is there any way to get this back????? HELP! This is my computer at work and I have TONS of important data on there! frown (I know I know...but I didn't feel like I needed to back up the data, my previous tactic was to keep all data on a seperate partition that way I can always re-format and re-install if XP ever screws up :P )

  11. Well it seems like I'm gonna have to put 98 on there, there is an accounting program that won't run on XP... :x

but still would like to figure it out...

anyways, on my XP box, i can see the other XP in Net. Neigh. but when I click on it, it gives me the "...is not accessible. You might no have permission to use this network. Contact administrator..etc..etc... Network path was not found"

Strange, cause when the box is off, it doesn't show up, but when on, it shows up.

  12. This is a fresh install of XP, did not modify much on it, all that was done was added account names of the other box's to it. Guest account is open as well.

It has been a while since I messed around with this, so I just basically copied all the settings on my XP box over to the new one. Well...I guess I'll have a busy day ahead of me trying to figure this out..some start for a new year frown if all else fails, I guess I'll just place win98 on it :P

What's also strange is that it doesn't even show itself in Net.Neigh. No workgroups, nothing is visible. It gives me an error that there are no workgroups.

A quick IPCONFIG on both XP machines, the only difference I notice is that with the working XP Box, WINS Proxy is Enabled, but not on the other one, could this be the problem? And if so, how can I enable it? Can't find it anywhere.

  13. yah, Client for MS Networks, TCP/IP and File and Print sharing..those are the only ones I need. What makes it so troublesome is that this new XP box is the Chinese version and it actually does seem different.

Like I said, I can access the shares on the new box by file explorer typing \\192.XXX.XX.X\ but I can't access it thru Network Neighborhood, none of the other machines are showing up. It can surf the Internet fine too.

The other machines can't access the new XP box either via Net. Neigborhood nor thru file explorer, it can ping it though. I had thought maybe it was firewall settings on the new xp box, but nope, it's not.

Well...I'm at home today..so I won't be able to fiddle with it till tomorrow.

  14. Ok, we got a new XP box at work. I hooked it up and the IP is thru DHCP of the IP router. It can ping all the pcs (98 & XP) and even browse the internet, but when I click on network places, nothing shows up. I know it's in the correct workgroup and also same subnet mask, but still nothing. My XP box see's it in the neighborhood browser but says I don't have permissions...i already added the appropriate user accounts to the new XP box.

    is there something i'm overlooking?

  15. for some reason, when a 98 box is communicating (getting files and such) with my xp box, the NIC just dies, i have to reboot the XP box inorder to get it working again. 98 and XP boxes are all networked together and had worked up until now, they are all hooked up to the net via a router and switch. anybody have any ideas?

  16. well...i had thought i installed the latest drivers, but it seems i got the i386 glx instead of the i586, forgot about the kernel files too...so i grabbed that as well...installed both, restarted x and it messed up, had to go to console and reconfigure x, got it back up and edited the xfconfig file as stated in the readme, restarted x and only thing different is the Nvidia splash screen prior to starting x.

man, it's been forever since i messed with linux, but some of it is coming back..guess i'll fiddle around some more with it later, 1:36am here..going to bed. :x x)
