the last time i messed around with linux was with mandrake 7.?? and from what i remembered, corel office came with a self installer instead of the previous /make /make config /make install crap that you had to do in the past. true there are way to many distro's out there, but the bigger names are the ones trying to target end users. it's kinda tough to bundle everything or alteast bundle some standard apps into it cause isn't that what microsoft is in trouble for? b'sides, the idea behind letting you choose what's right for you is great, but then again..like i said before, i'm a pretty lazy guy so that's why i stick with microsoft and so does the rest of the 90% soho market.

to tell you the truth, i'm not sure what he does over there, i just know the first day on the job he was using his managers account to log in to 'familiarize' himself with their system. i highly doubt that he's in a high position though. my point just stating that linux can be a very powerful tool. as for regular end user, i think it can be used by the average joe if it's properly configured and installed first. lets remember that the average joe buys a pc pre-installed with windows too. if you were to give that person a pc and tell him/her to install it from scratch, i'm sure they'd run into TONS of problems configuring everything as well. ask anybody off the street about fdisk/partitions/etc. and check out their reaction. lets not forget the topic of the thread, it was does linux suck or what?

Quote: Linux is cool as a toy lol, don't let any linux users see that! actually you'd be surprised how many big corps run linux as servers, and for important stuff, not for simple web servers. a buddy of mine from college is now working for VISA and they're running linux for some secure application. how do i know? the first day on the job he was messing around with some of the settings and was visited by VISA security right afterwards, almost cost him his job, hehe

heh, i know plenty of ppl who have used windows and STILL don't know how to use it. i remember messing with Linux 2 years back, with redhat 5.1, it came with this huge reference book which was very useful, and also having a friend who knows the stuff was a bonus since he could log into my pc from the states and compile everything for me. i haven't really checked out any of the newer distros, but i can say that it has come a long long way and more user friendly with each distro. might wanna check out redmond linux, looks like a really nice distro. ps. i'm not a computer science major...i'm a college dropout..but i still figured linux out and later installed and configured my own... don't get me wrong, i still would prefer windows over linux, but then again, that's probably cause i'm a lazy b4stard, hehe

i think he's refering to Hardware MP3 player? so that might be the problem he's getting that it can't read ntfs file system. The only options would probably to re-install win2k and this time install it with fat32 instead of NTFS, otherwise, invest in an external harddrive and format that new drive as fat32 and copy those mp3's onto that drive.

heh, i guess i'm one of those folks that was too lazy to mess around with those settings...heh, i also didn't know that you could view picture files in thumbnails under explorer ..also i've only had the inf loop problem one time, that's it...i guess i'm lucky, using the recent xp driver from Nvidia 21.83 on my Leadtek Geforce2mx SH Pro. has anybody checked out the Remote Connection feature? It Kicks A$$, i like it alot better than VNC

Quote: Amazingly enough, its not! As a matter of fact, I'm using it as I type this reply right now! heh, are you typing it outside in the snow? -
i never saw that in Win2000, WinNT, Win98 or in Win95
-
what impressed me the most was no more need to click 'start' 'turn off computer' 'turn off' anymore...a simple push of the power button automatically turns it off! wow! that's how it should have been all along!

Quote: I see. I think it may be overheating actualy. I do NOT have a heat sink! All i have is a mall fan! Quote: Note, again for reference, here is the system specs: AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHZ on an ECS k55SA motherboard heh, i'm still stunned at this part of the post! u'd think the cpu would be fried by now! -
does your bios not support cd boot?

i kinda regretted spending US$40 for it, it didn't come with any games and the only game i ever play is counter-strike, i ended up taking it to the office cause the boss's kid likes it alot, heh...gotta do something to make up for the days i show up to work drunk:D
-
i have the corded version, seems to work well in XP/2K, if that helps any, though i only use it for simple games...tried it out on a demo copy of aquanox, but was too lazy to configure all the buttons, etc..

yeah the server is slow, it used to be faster but the ISP got flooded when we had the typhoon so their network has been $h1tty. BTW, server being in Taiwan doesn't speed things up either, lol. But atleast they offer me with 100MB webspace, 100MB email space, 3+ gbps downstream and 256kbps upstream all for a measly US$21/month unlimited access!
-
i'm using the web space provided by my ISP, ppl do have problems but usually if you hit 'refresh' a couple of times it'll load up.

yup and it's freeware too! the webpage is http://www.ntutility.com/freeware.html heres a screenshot: ..also, I noticed that Morpheus randomly connects to servers...so that one i posted above might not be right, hence the 'appears' part
-
Morpheus uses port 1214 and the server appears to be 24.141.46.95 I used Active Ports to find that out, you can grab a copy at http://www.smartline.mu/software/aports.zip dunno about kazaa, don't have it installed. hth
-
don't really think it's network problems, cause the only time that happens is when i submit the reply, the other pages are loading up fine. *hmm..it worked fine this time* lol 8)

For some reason, one of the 98box is screwing up. It can't find the rest of the network but itself although It's able to obtain a lease from the dhcp server (router/switch) but not able to ping it. That's really odd. Anybody have any clue?
-
heh, seems it's working again. oh well...guess must have been just one of those thigngs

I messed around with the NIC settings and Under WINS I unticked the 'Enable LMHOSTS lookup and it sped up the peer-to-peer browsing here.

hmm..sucking air from the heatsink would shorten the lifespan on the fan wouldn't it? I mean, the heat that is sucked thru the fan would not help cool the friction of the bearings. Just a thought.

dip switches? that only changes the multiplier clock of your cpu, what you are looking for is the jumper for your fsb settings, check your manual, should be 3 tiny pins with one plastic thingy shortning 2 of the pins. you'll have to pull it out with some tweezers or needle nose pliers and short the other two (or whatever the manual says). I would post a pic but they don't seem to have the manual for your board on any of chaintechs websites. lol, just rechecked chaintechs website and it just got hacked, wow.
