    cd burning problems *again*

This is frustrating, having cd burning problems again. Don't know what the problem is and have even did another clean-install of win2k with no luck. Seems that the software, both Nero 5 and 5.5 are burning it fine, but it is not accessible. I noticed by visually checking the disk that it indeed has been burnt, but the coloring is lighter than a good burnt disc. Could it be possible that the laser is dirty or not giving out enough power? If so, how do I go at solving this? Well, I will take this external HP burner home tonight and see if it is the SCSI card or just the Yamaha burner that is causing this problem. In the meantime any ideas will be appreciated.

    cd burning problems *again*

Heh, after about 20 nice and shiny gold coasters I have laying around the apt. I decided to crack the burner open (since the warranty period was over, and I didn't send in the regestration card) and noticed a thin layer of gunk on the lens, grabbed a cotton t-shirt and cleaned it off, re-assembled it, test burned a multi-session disc, and guess what, it worked! hooray! I knew Yamaha didn't make crappy hardware considering I paid about 400 for it. That thin layer of gunk would explain why the burn was so faint, and why it was still able to read and burn, guess it wasn't burning fully and perhaps missing some blocks as well. Anyways, hope this helps anybody out there, whom like me, live in a rather filthy apt.

    DNS Questions

at work i'm behind 2 proxy servers (both are freeware:p ) I have AnalogX for HTTP/POP/SMTP/FTP and Jana for Socks5. How do I find out what ports the apps are using? For example ping, tracert, nslookup and vnc. At home I'm connected via Cable Modem, not behind any proxy and at work we are connected via DirectPC. I can connect via vnc from the server machine at work to my home pc without a problem. The problem lies with the proxy server.

    SP2 Official release

Just grabbed a copy and installed it. Afterwards, everything seemed to run fine, ran clibench hard drive bench and it seems to be a tad slower (ATA 100 Maxtor drive). Well, ran Winamp and sat back read a magazine, after about 10-15minutes, music died, windows froze hard, had to hit the reset button.

    cd burning problems *again*

Well, I tried to burn the disc using the HP external SCSI drive and it burns fine, yet the Yamaha is still not able to burn the disc. This is killing me. The Yamaha drive read perfectly the disc I made with the HP. btw, I've burned about 150+ discs of the Yamaha before, it just suddenly died on me.

  9. Is it just me or can you just not delete your own posts? oh yah, another annoyance is that every time I visit back to this site and post, the 'show signature' is clicked on default...kinda annoying forgeting about it and having to go back and un-click it.

    Help with AMDK6

nothing to worry about, just a bug that happens with older amd chips where it will report 1/2 the actual speed. there was a post in here somewhere about it.
  11. i have tried about everything and can't seem to be able to flash the bios. i am absolutely positive that i have the correct flash utility as well as the correct bios but everytime i try, it prompts me with a 'file size does not match' error. i even tried to flash the old saved bios and it still gives me the same error. 14. Here's the problem...I have Win2K English here at work and it is acting as a file server for other pc's here. There are some files that are in chinese and were able to be accessed when I had win98, but after installing w2k (clean install) the files are no longer able to be accessed by the other machines nor my machine. I think it's because of the funky characters being generated. Folders with roman characters and the files within it with roman characters as well are able to be viewed whereas the chinese ones cannot. Anyone had this problem before? Is my only option to rename all the folders/files to english names???

I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

heh, has anybody seen this? http://www.we-deliver.tv/
  16. heh, i know sounds are *.wav files and the sounds folder is still there, but after following those instructions and restarting icq, the sound dissapeared...i'm stumped and thought maybe it was one of those *.dll files that messed with it...i guess not. *sigh*
  17. is it just me or does sound disappear afterwards? that 'uh oh' on incoming messages is gone now, how do i get it back? i'm sure it's in one of those 3 dll's that got deleted

  19. I just put win2k on my pc at work and can't get my scanner to work, it keeps giving me black previews and also makes the scanner sound really LOUD and rough. Just wondering if anybody got it working succesfully, if not then I guess I'll move it to a win98 box and have it set up a server.

Am I the only one who thinks Win ME sucks?

hmm..actually parts DO matter...I'm no expert, but I've done my share of OS installations, everything from Linux to BeOS. I know for some pc's installation will go smoothly while other pc's will put up a fight. I think mostly it's hardware related and really dependant on the compatilibility of these hardwares. I have some machinese that run flawlessly without BSOD and that's running Win98, but the hardware is usually above average, then I have had cheapo pc's crash every now and then. So it's like saying I'm putting a 350HP engine in my Ford Pinto and it will break. Get it? Anyways, just my 2 cents...
  22. Just curious here, the 4in1 4.29 drivers I installed made my Maxtor 15GB Ultra ATA100 Drive state as a "Maxtor 5 1536H2 SCSI Disk Device". Anybody know the deal or if this could be a problem? Also just noticed that the DVD rom was also indicated as a SCSI CdRom Device (on seperate IDE channel) Would also like to know how to check if the HD is being used as ATA100? Where to check? Benchmark for the drive: Read Max 17655 kB/sec Read Average 16030 kB/sec Read Min 13438 kB/sec Write Max 36571 kB/sec Write Average 32120 kB/sec Write Min 28444 kB/sec CPU usage 6 percent
  23. hmm...that sounds scary... When I had my old IBM ata33 drive and installed udma support it was being read as SCSI drive as well, and I know I rebooted over 10 times without any problems.. Well, I searched all over the ever so complicated ms knowledge base and didn't find the hotfix but i did send AOpen an email about the problem, hope they get back to me soon. as for error log, there was only one error i saw and it was refering this: viadsk The device, \Device\Scsi\viadsk2, did not respond within the timeout period. that's it, only appeared once so i know it's not a boot up issue. you are refering to the 'Event Viewer\System Log' when you say Error Log right?
