    lost cd rom drives

Some program improperly installed their Lowerfilters or Upperfilters in this Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q270008 In Windows XP deletion of upper and lower filter keys will not remove that program unless you also delete the Service registry entries and the drivers themselves.
  7. Open My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types, look for WMx extensions and change default program. Windows Media Player will work as a gateway to the Internet if you click Media Guide in the vertical panel of options on the left. It defaults to the site http://www.windowsmedia.com on launch. To turn it off, choose Tools, Options, Media Player tab, clear Start Player In Media Guide. If Windows Media Player is in skin mode, press Ctrl+1 to reach full mode. To have Windows Media Player’s menu bar appear, press Alt key. Open the File menu. If Work Offline is checked, choose this command to clear the check mark and go back online.

    Mouse Acceleration - Help!

Did you try specific program button selection on first tab (buttons)? It has come to be known that there was disagreement at Microsoft between the team working on Intellimouse Explorer software and the Windows XP programmers. That is why you cannot control the level of acceleration in Windows XP but only choose its activation and rely on sensitivity adjustment. No known solution at the present time.

    XP vs 2k Game Performance

Standard Windows XP configuration hurts responsiveness and it shows. MenuShowDelay has an excessive string value of 400 in: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop The system reserves 20% Internet bandwidth. Disappearing CD-ROM/CD-RW ... any solutions?

Microsoft solution: check Windows XP Registry to find the two keys "LowerFilters" and "UpperFilters" in this Dword: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-0 87002BE10318} Some programs add an extra letter in those keys and the CD-ROM disappears from Explorer. To restore CD-ROM drive access simply remove them.
  24. The VIA BETA driver patch was designed for AMD based KT133x, KT266x, VT8662, and KLE133 VIA motherboards in WindowsXP . George Breese comments: "On these chipsets, it will patch register 55 in the Northbridge, which will supposedly switch off a Memory Write Queue timer. In the KT133A datasheet, register 55 is "reserved". But - yikes! - in the KT266, the documented MWQ register is register 95, not 55. Register 55 contains unrelated DDR timing adjustments and could actually be dangerous to program. For this reason, I do not recommend installing this driver on the KT266x chipsets until VIA examines this issue. For now, use WPCREDIT and set bits 5, 6, and 7 to zero in register 95 instead."

ASPI Layer for W2k, does it exist?

The Adaptec program is only an upgrade for an existing ASPI layer. ASPI layer is Windows provides for wnaspi32.dll in winnt\system32 as the basic universal driver. Other active ASPI elements whether Vxd or otherwise may vary with the software. Avoid headache by using the ForceAspi utility. To install manually, get all four ASPI files here: http://www.windowplanet.net/downloads/binaries/aspifix.zip Put the four files in these folders and make them read-only: wnaspi32.dll in winnt\system32 aspi32.sys in winnt\system32\drivers winaspi.dll in winnt\system wowpost.exe in winnt\system Install the necessary Registry entries with: http://www.birdcagesoft.com/freeload/RegAspiNT.zip
