DHCP server, How do you do ?

Maybe Valery is only trying to start DHCP ? Just guessing but if so: Go to Control panel, choose administrative tools, then component services and click the services. Go down to the DHCP client, right click, choose properties, and set the startup type to automatic. Back off one step, choose start from the right click menu, and your DHCP is set to start automatically at next boot and its up and running for now. H.

    Does winXP have ACPI problems?

Can't recall where I saw it, but some BIOS versions may cause this harmless error message. I think it was Asus or Abit boards, should be or is fixed in newer bios versions. If you have either board, check their web sites for what fixes are implemented recently H

Outlook Express 6 very slow startup

There is a MS knowledgebase article on this read it HERE Its about OE 5.5, but might help anyhow. Also, it could be that you have a virus scanner that causes this, if so, try turning it completely off to see if thats the culprit. H

    Question about CD-RW

Is this a trick question or what ? When you choose (in Nero) "Recorder - Erase Rewritable" it should be like formatting a floppy, after that the free space of the disk shows up as the same as capacity (for example 651 MB /651 MB) Try another disk, or try to erase the disk again. It is a CD-RW disk, isn't it ? H.

    New system? Maybe....

Depends on what you do with your PC, but my guess is that you're in for a disappointment. Word, Excel & Max Payne is not going to be any faster, but benchmarks will be. I do understand you though, I just tried to give some friendly words of warning ... H.

    New system? Maybe....

I hope you are not expecting to see true wonders speedwise when you upgrade from a P4 1.5 Ghz @ 1.724 Ghz to a P4 1.6 Ghz @???? H.

Dual Boot, help me out plz

Or you switch boot drive in bios. If you want to do this, unplug the other HD when you install. H.

    MSI GF4 Ti4600 malfunction?

We are all guessing here, but I doubt that its a power supply problem. You write "I´ve also taken everything out of the system except the graphics card, reset the BIOS and still this error will occur.". If a 300W PSU cannot handle this, I would think (or rather test) twice before forking up the cash for a new PSU just because of this problem. After all, everything works (worked) fine when you get it installed. You could try this in BIOS setup: - disable AGP 4x, video mem & bios cahing - lower your memory timings (normal settuing instead of turbo/ultra) - increase all your voltages one notch H.

    MSI GF4 Ti4600 malfunction?

Easy to test, isn't it? Take out half of your RAM, all extra HD:s, any other "extra" stuff and see if it works. H.

    IE6 question

Always taught it's dependent of the original format, IE isn't exactly a picture format converter. H.

Buying a new video card and.......

For what its worth; go with the Nvidia. Myt reasoning is that because Nvidia has a huge share of the graphics card market, most games & software is developed on and made for Nvidia. ATI support is sort of an add-on. Like palos I'm waiting for the 4200 to become an off-the-shelf item, then we'll see what happens to the 4400 and 4600 prices and buy which one feels like a decent deal. I' guess we're talking July/August shopping here. H.

    permissions setup in XP

There is one disadvantage going NTFS and that is loosing the ability to access the HD from DOS (-floppy). Yes, I know there is a recovery console, yes, I know there are utilities to circumvent this. Still, nothing beats a good ol' bootdisk when you want to tinker with things. For most home users the security, permissions and disk quotas are not really that relevant. In an office enviroment they might be, but at home ? So why do I find the DOS disk so important ? First of all, it gives you an opportunity to fix things in your windows install (check out all the threads on locked files, undeletable directories etc). Also, for some tasks DOS is pretty handy, for example the easiest way to defrag the page file is simply deleting it in DOS. Secondly, and most important for me, is the possibility to use disk cloning software as the backup method and feel comfortable about it. OK, OK, I do know they work on NTFS too, but they do this by rewriting the Master Boot Record (MBR), pointing it to boot from a viritual (DOS) floppy, and then hopefully reverting after the clone is done. This is at least how Drive Image works, and I believe Ghost operates in a similar fashion. Well, I don't feel comfortable with this, I don't like fiddling with the MBR. If, just if, it goes south all your partitions are gone, quotas, permissions and all. To the issue of performance, there is no significant or even proven difference. MS claims so, but I've seen several tests where there is no difference found or FAT32 is marginally faster. If you want to use very large partitions or if you handle verly large files, NTFS is your only choice. H.

    IE6 question

Dunno what is wrong with your IE6, but mine here sure brings up the jpg format as well as the bitmap. But it depends on the picture, doesn't it ? H

    New system, what to get?

IBM's are great IMO, I have six of 'em spinning, the oldest one must be from 96 or so. You'l find anecdotal evidence that any HD brand is good or bad, I doubt that there is a big difference in quality between the major brands today. Speed etc is another matter. H.

    Renaming C:\Winnt

The work to rename the folder would be far too big to be worth it. Not only do you need to fork through the registry, but you'd also need to fork through every shortcut, many program settings, enviroment variables that are re-written to the registry etc. My advice is - don't even think about it. Ther option to rename is there during setup, just like pmisty says. BTW, why do you wan't to do it in the first place - why do you care so much what your sys directory is called? Let me guess, you want to multi boot W2K ? Its better to do that from different partitions. H.

    DDR Ram question(s)

Set your memory settings in BIOS to the slowest possible, maybe that will help (especially the latency to 2.5 or 3). Many people have problems when trying to mix two different sticks, for various reasone. For example, some mobos can autodetect the sticks optimal settings and get confused with two brands. Having different mem configs and banks as you apparently have is likely to cause problems. In short, its possible that you'll never get them working together. H.
  18. Am I missing something obvious here ? Say you get an e-mail, and you want to save the e-mail (the text) in your inbox or a folder, but delete the attatchement hanging on that message. Is that really impossible ? Running Outlook Express 6, if that matters H.

Can you delete attatchements in Outlook Express?

Thanks, precisely what I sorta remembered but needed to know ! H.
  20. Quote: As cheap as processors are, why don't you just buy a new CPU? Yep, buy the fastest one there is / you can afford, and then overclock the heck out of it !! H.

Can you delete attatchements in Outlook Express?

Thanks, that does the trick, as long as it doesn't have to be performed often. Still, I find it strange that there's no way of doing this within the program. Anyone know wether Outlook (as opposed to Outlook Express) can do this ? H.

Can you delete attatchements in Outlook Express?

Right, the individual mail is stored in the .dbx files and you can decide wherever they should be stored. Sampson, I think you saw the temp files. It is a while since I've used it, and my memory isn't what it should be, but I distinctly recall the full Outlook (maybe ver. 4 or 5) to have this functionality. You just rightclicked (or whatever) the attachement and could delete it while keeping the e-mail. Can somebody confirm? H.
  24. What are your settings (multiplier x FSB) ? The highest possible FSB is what you should aim for, not highest possible CPU speed alone. Of course its worth it, as long as you get it up and running stable! And apart from a minimal risk - whats there to loose ? Another thing is that it seems pretty unlikely to succeed. H.

    Hibernation Problem

Never thought of it that way, but yes, I believe ACPI is a prerequisite for hibernation, at least in practice. MS knowledge base is likely to answer that question if you care to search it. Does your friends box have the hibernation tab when right clicking desktop then select properties, screen saver, power? Does a file called hiberfil.sys appear in the root of the system drive ? Somewhere at MS site there used to be (years ago) a utility called HiberTest.EXE which could, in the usual confusing MS way, give some hints on what the obstacle to hib was. H.
