The reviews of floppy drive led modifications etc etc (gee- a red led instead of the green one...) is not the worst part, there was a battle cry for avatars which would position this site directly into the early puberty market. Worse; we have some regular flooders who post (often half a screen) of nonsense commenting all and any threads, making the forums pretty annoying even if they too post useful stuff every now and then. And, as I'm b1tching already, I'm not really sure that the new software running the forums is an improvement. Anyhow, it can't be said clearly enough, Phillip, SHS, Clutch, DosFreak, CUviper, Four and Twenty, Blade Runner, Sapiens 24, Inferno and many, many others of the members have put in a huge work and helped many users during the years making this an excellent site. My vote would be to keep it that way, more professional, even it it becomes a bit "old-fashioned", without reviews on Super-Lasers new fan grilles with 84 pics. H.

Personally, I don't mind the files so much as the compatibility list showing up on top. That one I'd be happy to see behind its own link at the side. H.

You bet its weird. Not one ping worked yesterday, still I was able to browse most sites. As mentioned I've tried to flush back to a fresh XP install but that didn't help. Anyhow, now I've seen that the problem is varying (I used to be able to ping some but not all sites) I'm pretty convinced that the cable company is to blame, another thing is how I'll be able to convince them about it. Heh, tonight things are different -they are worse! I can't ping ot tracert any sites, even if they work with IE6. Anyone have an explanation of that? Neotrace doesn't work at all, just shows 2 points, my PC and the destination (see below). I can reach www.yahoo.com with IE6 without any problems. Sounds like you have switched the autoplay feature off. Several tweak programs (like TweakUI) allows you to adjust this, and it could be that you have to use the same one you used originally (inadvertedly perhaps) to switch it off with. Right-click on the drive icon for your CD, go to Properties, then to the autoplay tab. There you can adjust the autoplay for different kind of CD's. H.

OK, The router has been out of the loop for a good while now, the cable modem is directly plugged into my main machine. That was about the first thing I did, sorry for not explaining it clearer (see post #1). The sites I can't ping I can't throw a tracert to, heck not even a nslookup works. With other sites all three work fine. The cable company is, well, a cable company, and claim that some software is blocking at my end. What could that be ? I have no firewall installed, no proxy, Lmhost is not enabled, URL filters are not enabled and no security policies are set. The cable company just claims that they would have plenty of complaints if it was on their end, but I'm not convinced. So, thats where I stand, either I have to find out what is blocking or I have to present enough evidence to convince the cable guys that it really is at their end. And I can't get one more idea on what to do... H.

SamSpade only traces my IP as "probable bogus rDNS: No DNS", I guess my ISp has some shields as my IP is a dynamic IP. Spade gets the canonical name right though. H.

This is some nightmare... I've tried both DosFreaks suggestion to switch around primary and secondary DNS server and Clutch suggestion to use a different one- with no luck. I also tried to flush back to a fresh XP install (Drive Image) with not much else than XP installed. Same problem, only difference was that now I was able to ping the damned sites that I cannot connect to. It was slow, but the ping worked - but with IE6 not a chance. The oddest thing is that I can't connect to My ISP's (the cable company) news server, and only randomly to their web page. When connecting to their newsserver I get an error 11004 which I believe means that some software is blocking. But there is none... Somehow I can't imagine that the problem is on my end. About the same time this started the cable company switched DNS server adresses and as I was then accessing over a static IP thru a router it took a while to figure out. Now they maintain that I "must have something blocking traffic". Shoot, in order to get the butt moving at my cable company & ISP I need some strong proof that the problem is on their side. If it really is on my side I have no idea what to try out anymore or where it could be anyone have ideas on how to get forward ?? H.

You are beyond help because you do twenty things at once, and either repeat your info endlessly (see above "every single time" 3x already in this thread) or you do something else than suggested, or you reply with OK, I'll do that when... I don't believe that you've even bothered to check out any of the 658 google results on "failed OpenOffice 1.0 install" Sampsons first reply to you really said it all - why don't you just do that ? If you read his answer carefully, he was actually telling you that Drwatson will not tell you a whole lot - not that you should post what it tells you. H.

Yes, you need wake on LAN (WOL) for this to work. Also, he must have a fixed IP address, so you have somewhere to send the wake up command to. BTW, for reasons I've never understood, WOL only works for me if the PC is shut down (not hibernated) on my LAN. Also, it needed the NIC manufacturers (3Com) drivers (as opposed to the W2K /XP ones) to work. Another nice proggy you might want to try out for remote connections is Remote Administrator, available at www.famatech.com. H.

OK, I'm a FAT32 fan and wouldn't put NTFS on any of my private systems, corporate stuff is another story. Still, I've never heard that NTFS would really give anyone a noticeable performance hit. It isn't faster, its slower, but it isn't really that much slower. In short, I doubt that your trouble is because of NTFS, but unless you are running on big corporate networks, run huge files etc stay with FAT32. H.

SOF2 isn't bad, but isn't really all that different from SOF1. But its fun andf challenging if you like first person shooters. M4Carbine points out some major annoyances, unfortunately you find these in all games. I'm on the hospital roof and can't get rid of that bloody hellcopter, I've hit it with one grenade though. Uykucu, I'm disappointed on your attitude. If we would have a sys admin who would try to restrict access to changing background images and such he would find himself outta work and fast. Imagine a cleaning lady restricting access to the garbage bin because she doesn't like to empty it... This is the kind of '80s attitude, the users are there to serve the network and the sysadmin thinks he is some sort of semigod issuing corporate policies. People have PC's and the P stands for Personal. The more they enjoy it - the better they work with it. If they want to ICQ in a hotel room instead of having beer in the bar its their business. H.
