    Win98 and win2k... but

    2 GeForce2 or not 2 GeForce2...that is the question?

I own a GeForce 256 SDR (Creative Labs), and have never had any problems with it in Win2K with any of released or leaked NVidia or Creative Win2K drivers. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

    Diablo 2 final problems

Matrox the creme de la creme? Man, someone's living in the past! Matrox took over the niche that was previously owned by NumberNine with their Imagine 128 card for 2D acceleration. Matrox had their brief, shinning moment and beat out S3D cards sold by the likes of Diamond, etal. Matrox was king of the 2D-cards for quite some time (a long time in computer industry terms). However, once 3Dfx came out with their original 3D-only Voodoo chipset, things started to change for people wishing to have a good 3D gaming card. (There was one other good but shortlived 3D chipset in their, a Power-whatever, or so I recall). I owned the original Orchid Righteous 3D voodoo card, later replaced my a more stable Diamond Monster 3D one. 3Dfx maintained the lead in 3D gaming cards for quite some time, later producing the Voodoo2 chipset licensed to OEM's like Creative (I've still got two Creative 12Mb Voodoo2 cards stuck in a drawer somewhere, along with a FireGL Pro, which was used for 2D). And Matrox still held a good share of the 2D market, as well. The Voodoo2 chipset held its own even against up-and-coming rival NVidia, who came out with the original TNT chipset shortly after 3Dfx's voodoo2's. The TNT chipset was good and it was fast and it offered 2D and 32-bit graphics, unlike the Voodoo2's. However, it couldn't hold a candle to the raw 16-bit speed of two Voodoo2's used in tandem. That's about when everything changed. 3Dfx announced their new chipset, the Voodoo3, would ONLY be produced by 3Dfx, basically telling all their previous OEM's to get stuffed. NVidia, meanwhile, started production of the TNT2 and the TNT2U, both of which offered blazing performance in 16-bit and acceptable performace in 32-bit color. With the GeForce cards, NVidia still maintains their huge market share in the gaming kingdom, second place being held by 3Dfx. I haven't used a 3Dfx card since switching to the TNT2, and later the GeForce, but I know this. I've never...NEVER...seen so many damn released and leaked drivers provided for any other video card, even my old FireGL. Buggy releases or not, they're still the best going, IMHO. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

    bizzare cd burner problem

I'm running an HP8100i also, along with Adaptec ECDC 4.02c and have no problems burning discs, even 10-20 at a session. Sounds like possible corrupted files/registry to me. Are you running the latest version of ECDC 4? Any beta hardware drivers? ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

    Revolution IV by Number Nine

NumberNine had their hayday with the Imagine I-128 under Windows 3.1, and it was all downhill after that. Sell the card you have at a garage sale or something, and pick up a decent used TNT2/TNT2U if you want to do it on the cheap. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

VERY puzzling problem w/ Adaptec ECDC

I've been burning CD-R's with no problems whatsoever using ECDC 4. Specifically, 4.02c. If you're using any version other than 4, there are known problems and some workarounds. I'd suggest you goto http://www.adaptec.com/ and check them out. If you're running version 4, get the latest updates. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."
  7. I've been running Win2K, and ONLY Win2K, for the past several months, ever since the last 3rd-party software vender released a patch for my work-software. I've got a 333Mhz P2, 192MBytes RAM, GeForce SDR, HP8100 CD-RW, Creative 6X DVD-ROM, Creative Dxr3 DVD decoder card, yada, yada... Works with everything I have. Works faster and more stable. It was necessary to apply the Hollywood Sigma beta/Creative Dxr2-Dxr3 hack to watch DVD movies. It works, and works faster with the games I have, but I'm pretty selective about the games...Half-Life, HL Opposing Force, Quake3, Soldier of Fortune. It even (believe it or not) runs an old GWBASIC program I use in my work. How it does that, I dunno, since the program directly accesses LPT1. Anyway, I sure like it. Never going back to Win98SE or on to WinMe. My advice is to check here and other forums first for hardware and game compatibility on items you have or intend to purchase. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

    High Heat 2001

I've always found GameCopyWorld: http://www.gamecopyworld.com/ a reliable source for game patches, etc.
  9. I've noticed that my taskbar icons will look really ****ty if I switch to Large Fonts. For instance, I run 1024x768x16 and small fonts on my 19" monitor. If I switch to large fonts with the same resolution, the taskbar icons (specifically on the right end of the taskbar) look really cruddy.
  10. Don't know that this will help anything, but the Creative Dxr3 beta drivers are about as buggy as you can get. Even to the point of kidnapping (as best I can describe it) some of the video codecs. Only solution, the ONLY solution to that problem that I've found is a complete reformat/reinstall of Win2K. Again, it may not have anything to do with your problem, but then again...they call them "beta" for a reason.

Networking Win2k to Win98 comps! HELP

    >Same probleme the W2000 comp has access to the files on the W98s (2comps) read and write but not vice versa????????''< This won't help the first poster, but it may help you. Goto Control Panel>Users & Passwords>Advanced>Advanced. Click on Users>Guest. Uncheck the, "Account is disabled" box, then reboot. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

    Norton Antivirus

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I found their tech support to be good. What I had to do was to go back to the webpage where I had purchased the software (hopefully you kept a copy of the email Symantec Store sent you), reinstall the ZL-whatever to the desktop, then re-download the evaluation edition. Then reinstall it, and run the ZL-whatever. After that, you'll have a fully-functioning, non-crippled NAV 2000. If you didn't keep the email they sent you, have their tech support remail you the URL. Kind of a ****ty way of doing things, IMHO. You'd think they'd actually let you download a non-crippled version, since you've bought and paid for it.

    Fool win98-programs in Win2k

Very good, DOSFreak. I d/l'd and installed Beta 3, and it works fine for the simple jobs I need it for. Looks to be a very, very powerful tool, too. Thanks for the heads up. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

    Fool win98-programs in Win2k

    >www.powerarchiver.com for a nice freeware (not what your looking for) compression program.< Oh, goody, another friggen beta. Having just had to do a format and re-install after suffering the consequences of installing Creative's Dxr3 beta drivers, I'm not relishing installing any new betas. More importantly, are YOU using this program, and how has it behaved for you?
  16. I'm using Win2000 on a 333Mhz, and it's substantially faster than with Win98. I've got Norton Antivirus and Creative Disc Detector running in my system tray, almost necessary evils. RAM does make a difference, as I could tell when I upgraded from 128 to 192. I turned off some services, since I'm only running this on a 2-'puter peer-to-peer network that is our home and office system. My GeForce card may help. I must say, Win2000 is much stabler than Win98, as well as faster. The initial load takes a bit longer, but no more unneccesary re-boots.

    Fool win98-programs in Win2k

Along the same lines, has anyone been successful at installing the portion of the Windows 98 PLUS CD that handles the pkZIP-unZIP install into the Windows 98 Windows Explorer shell? I tried it with acompat.exe and had no luck. I'd much rather it than WinZIP.

New Creative Dxr3 Win2k Beta Drivers

It now seems that the Creative Dxr3 beta somehow "kidnaps" some of the video codecs. At least, that's what it appears to do. I noticed on starting some of my .MPG video files in Windows Media Player, that Media Player tries (unsuccessfully) to download updated codecs. The result is the video is very slow and jerky. It did not do this prior to installing the Creative beta. Uninstalling the Creative beta did not remedy this, nor did installing the new Media Player beta help either. I was able to confirm that Creative's beta caused this problem, since I had to install a new HDD yesterday and did a clean install of Win2000 on the new drive. I ran a .MPG video in Windows Media Player just prior to installing Creative's beta, and it ran fine. After installing the beta the same problem occurred. However, I can use the Creative PC-DVD player to run the .MPG videos, so not all is lost...though it pisses me off to have to resort to that. ------------------ "Being married to a programmer is like owning a cat: You talk to it but you're never really sure if it hears you, much less comprehends what you say."

New Creative Dxr3 Win2k Beta Drivers

Ledzeppel, sorry to hear they've worked out that way for you...guess that's why they're beta I don't have PnP enable in my BIOS on my old-now Dell D333, or ACPI for that matter. Kinda nice being able to choose what IRQ's get used for what (in a round-about-way). Nor am I currently running any D3D games, just OpenGL. And thanks for the heads-up on the conflicts you mentioned. Hopefully, Creative (or Sigma Designs, or whoever) will get stuff fixed for the final release. Gawd knows, some of us have been waiting a long, long time for something other than the Hollywood/Creative Dxr2/Dxr3 hack! I should mention that I'm using a GeForce SDR with NVidia 5.22 drivers. I may try enabling standby mode and see if I get the same results. [This message has been edited by DeadCats (edited 10 June 2000).]

New Creative Dxr3 Win2k Beta Drivers

The Creative beta drivers and application appear to be working fine for me under Windows 2000 Professional (final). Tried 'em out with The Matrix, though I didn't have time to play the movie all the way through.

I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

    >>If you can judge someone by their typing, then you really do have no heart for anyone...Your posts here mean really nothing to me, because I know that it is impossible for someone to judge another person over what they type, real or fake<< Better not tell my wife that, since we met and fell in love with each other online in 1993 (we were married 5 years ago last December). We could even decipher what kind of mood each other was in by WHAT was typed, and HOW it was typed. Maybe for YOU it is impossible. But please quit judging others by your own inabilities.
