  1. From what I recall, it works much like the old 3D glasses (with the red and blue lenses). You run special software on your PC, and then fire up the game. The video output is split into two channels, and your monitor looks like it's gone beserk. The glasses have lenses in them which refresh at different rates and fooling your brain into making it one solid image again, but it looks 3D rather than flat. The glasses need to patch into the video signal so they can refresh at the same rate as the monitor and make sure that each lens is displaying the correct image at the right time. I think they'd be interesting toys to play with, but I'd definately want to have a go with them before I shelled out.
  2. I'm pretty sure that DVD drives use lasers at different frequencies to those in CD drives. So it is physically impossible for a CD drive to read a DVD disk.
  3. Someone at the company I work for received this email: Quote: Dear Sir / Madam ref: Windows Security Update. Please call Microsoft Technical Support on 0871 xxx xxxx for your Microsoft Windows security update. Due to recently intensified Internet Virus and Hacker Attacks, it is vitally important that you update your personal computer's Microsoft Windows operating system. Please call 0871 xxx xxxx. Thankyou. Kind Regards Microsoft Technical Support Anti-Virus/Anti-Hacking Windows Update Tel: 0871 xxx xxxx Obviously a hoax, but we had to phone the number to be sure Within a couple of rings, a guy answered (first clue - MS don't answer the phone that quickly), and the second giveaway was the kids screaming in the background. Could have been 'bring your children to work day' I guess I reckon someone has just decided to setup a high cost phone line and see how many people he can sucker in. I'd have loved to stay on the phone to see what he was upto, but I wasn't going to line his pockets any more than needed.

Spare my port 1433/4, would you?

Unfortunately not. Blocking ports with your firewall just means that any probes on those ports won't get anywhere. There's no way to actually stop the probes from coming in (excpet to pull the network cable).

    A wireless solution

Does that not require line of sight? Any buildings, trees, large vehicles get in the way and the link is broken. Why wireless? Can you not use a modem/ISDN/Cable/ADSL connection?

UNREAL II - what is your take?

Watch the spoilers. Us UK peeps don't get it until the 7th The movies of it that I've watched have been very impressive though.
  7. I wouldn't be surprised to see nVidia pull some more performance out of the bag with updated drivers. Remember how they kept doing that with the GF3 cards? Personally I'm going to use the FX release to lower the price of GF4 cards, and then get one of those to replace my aging original GF3.

    XP PRO Castle Wolfenstein ?

Have you tried playing with the sound disabled? I know it's not ideal, but it might help with troubleshooting to see if the sound drivers are causing the problem.

    check this out !!

Don't bother clicking the link. The guy is trying to secretly get people to join his 'army' in some web based game. Clicking the link joins you to his army. It's completely pointless and a waste of space. Any mods passing may feel like deleting this thread

Maybe it's your motherboard drivers. Are you running the latest BIOS/drivers for it?

    Monitor problems

Have you unticked the box that say "Hide modes this monitor can't display" (or words to that effect?). Otherwise as mentioned, I'd point the finger at your video drivers.

    Possible Hard Disk Faliure HELP!!

That's not strictly true. When I called IBM about a failing 60GXP, they told me to download the diag tools and run them first. I should then call them back with the results and they would decide then about an RMA number. As a first port of call, I would try the diag tools first. They may just help you fix the problem without having to send the drive back.

    Possible Hard Disk Faliure HELP!!

ChkDsk will only report on cross linked files or bad sectors on the drive surface. If there's a problem with the electronics, it won't pick it up for you. A lot of hard drive manufacturers release vaious diagnostic tools for their disks. Vist the manufacturers website and see if some are available for your drive. It may just help tell you what's going on. If you can't see any tools on the site, call the manufacturers tech support line. It's possible the tools are hidden away and the support staff will tell you how to get them.

    Norton Corporate Edition 7.6 question

NAV Corp does have an Exchange/Outook/Lotus Notes plugin. We don't run either of those apps at our place, so I can't tell you how well they work. The version of NAV that I use at home integrates into my Outlook very well and is top notch at spottig infected files as they are emailed into me. NAV Corp does real time scanning, but I'm not sure what you mean about a monitor. Are you asking if there's a window you can open and see exactly which files are being scanned at the time? If so, then I don't think that's possible. When you run a full system scan, you can see what is being scanned though.

desktop size changes when opening any window??

The technical term for this is 'blooming'. It's caused when the electronics in the monitor have to switch from one colour to another quite quickly (as happens if you maximise a window). It's normally a sign of cheap electronics in the monitor and isn't user fixable. The only thing you can do is return the monitor and try a different one, or get it refunded and go for a different type of monitor altogether.

    Tape drive

At work we have a Storagetek L20 drive. It's fully loaded with 2 x LTO Ultirum Drives, and 20 slots for LTO Ultirum tapes. We use Legato Networker and backup around 25 servers everynight. On the whole it works pretty well. This isn't a cheap option though. IIRC the tape library was around £20K. The tapes are about £60ish each, and the Networker backup software runs into the thousands. It really is an enterprise level solution. It has a few little quirks, but the support bods from our reseller are very helpful. There are also a number of Legato authorised training courses to attend which will get you up to speed. Just about everything is licensed seperately though. Need to upgrade your tape library from 1 drive to 2 drives? ANother drive license is needed. Upgrading it from 10 slots to 20 slots, a license upgrade is needed. Want to backup a SQL database server, you need to but a modue to do that. The cost soon mounts up. There have been times we've almost dumped Networker because of the cost of these licenses and modules, but we figure that if we do that, then all the money we've currently spent will be lost anyway. So we keep forking out for it. It's one of those situations unfortunately. Once you get into it, it can be very costly to get out

    PS/2 vs USB mouse detection

This is fairly standard. IIRC the MS keyboards with all the extra functions on only work properly if run as USB devices. If you use them as PS/2 keyboard, then I don't think you can use the extra buttons. Not sure if the function keys still work though....

007 Nightfire won't start in XP

I'm sure there was a patch on Windows Update for games that suffer problems when trying to run movies clips. Have you got that particular update installed? It might be worth having a look to see if it can be removed, and then reinstall that update.

    Medal of Honor and Cheapness

Quote: Well Bursar, I guess you were never in the REAL military then. You have to go through training there too. Nope. I've got absolutely no military experience what so ever. Ofcourse you have to go through training. Makes sense. No point sending soldiers off to do a risky job if they don't what they're doing once they get there. Quote: I think Medal of Honor's use of the Quake 3 engine is a good choice, but the programming behind it seems poor. Odd, it runs just fine on my PC (P4 1.6GHz 512MB RD-RAM, GF3) at 1280x1024 in 32bit. There's a lot more going on in MOHAA. The AI whilst not top notch is constantly doing stuff, the explosions and debris are probably fairly intensive on CPU time as well. It's just a pity that Speahead is so short. It also doesn't flow as well as the original game. In the original game you kind of moved from place to place, but the events hung together. In Spearhead you are hoping about all over the place doing different things. I just got the impression that parts of it were done purely because of Band of Brothers. It's a fun game, but really isn't a patch on the original. Given that the title is "Speahead Expansion pack: First Edition - Central Europe", I would expect there to be more packs that cover other events.

    Medal of Honor and Cheapness

Don't worry about finishing levels with 100 health. As long as you're still alive, then that's all that counts That level is pretty tough. I lost count of the number of times I had to play it to beat it. After a couple of goes you learn where the tanks and men are coming from so you can get the gun into position early and be ready for them. Just hit the tanks in the turrets and they go down fairly quickly. You can also shoot out the tree house type things with the machine gunners on them. Americas Army is fairly rubbish actually. I haven't played it for a while, but you have to go through the training levels, and they're mind numblingly boring. You have the shooting range, the obstacle course and so-on. I'm sure it's realistic to a point, but it's supposed to be a game, and the word game implies fun. And there doesn't seem to be much of that in AA. Still, for a freebie, what can you expect
  21. How about the website of the company that made the camera? They should be able to provide you with the bare drivers for it, but the selection of actual software may be limited to shareware trial versions of things. Failing that, use a search engine and search for the type of software you're looking for.
  22. What do the instructions say? Some card readers probably have their drivers shipped as part of Windows. Others won't. The one I have required that you installed some software first, rebooted, and then plugged the card reader in (I think that's right anyway).

    Screenshots turn out black

How are you taking the shots? Does the game support the taking of screen shots during gameplay? Are there different graphics modes available (for instance OGL and D3D)? It might be worth changing from one to the other if possible and trying again.

    MAX PAYNE CHEAT PROBLEMS

Maybe he's finished the game, and just wants to mess about with it. I've done that on a few occaisions. Once you've been through a game a few times, there isn't always much to bring you back to it. Using cheats can help extend the fun.
