  1. I've recently upgraded my PC both in terms of hardware and OS. Before, it was a P3 1GHz with an Intel D815EEA mobo and Windows 2000 Pro. My Fuji 2400 Zoom camera worked perfectly. After some initial driver installtion, Windows just saw the camera as a removeable drive when I hooked it up with the USB cable. Now my PC has an Intel D840MV mobo, P4 1.6GHz and is running XP Pro. I've installed the Intel USB 2.0 drivers for the motherboard, and the Fuji USB software for the camera (have downloaded latest versions from the web). When I connect my camera, it starts going through the motions, recognises the camera correctly, and then displays a message to the effect that my hardware has malfunctioned and won't work properly. I've tried different ports in the USB hub (it was fine under 2K and my mouse is hooked up via it), and I've tried it in a couple of different ports on the motherboard. I still get the same results. Does anyone else have one of these cameras working under XP? If so, how did you do it? The other alternative is that I buy a card reader, and just stick the memory card in that to transfer the pics, but this is a last resort.

Digital Camera doesn't work under XP

Tried more stuff last night. Updated software, reinstaled drivers, tried using the Windows 2000 drivers, but still nothing Looks like I'm going to have to get the card reader after all. Grrrrrr

Digital Camera doesn't work under XP

Quote: I´m still thinking that your problem may be caused by the USB 2.0 mobo´s drivers... have you tryed to uninstall them and check if the camera works? Another question, have you posted a message to the Fuji guys? I haven't done either of those things. I did try the camera before installing the Intel USB drivers. When it didn't work with the plain XP drivers, that's when I installed the Intel ones. I then re-installed the Fuji software just incase. I checked the IRQ settings, and one USB controller is on 19 on its own, the other is on 23 which it sharing with my 3Com NIC. Device Manager doesn't list any conflicts though, and I would expect them to share quite happily. I've tried several different ports (the mobo has 4), and I've also tried different ports on the hub (into which it was connected under 2K and it worked fine). I've just tried it again, and XP reports: USB Device Not Recognized One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message. So no change so far

Digital Camera doesn't work under XP

Quote: Do you have an IRQ assigned to USB? Erm, not sure. I'll check it. Quote: some cameras dont support usb in winxp Just what I wanted to hear. Not It's strange as Fuji have drivers on their site for the camera that are designed for XP, so I figured it should work. Looks like I may have to bite the bullet and buy the card reader

My keyboard and mouse are USB, and they work just fine. That's not to say that there might be some bizzare conflict between the drivers and the camera though

Remote Assistance / VNC controlling PC

VNC works like a charm, as I use it control a number of work machines without leaving my desk It doesn't support drag and drop, so there isn't an easy way to transfer files between the two systems. It will take you just as long to transfer files that you download onto your friends PC as it does for you to download them in the first place, so there isn't really going to be much benefit there. There is also minor lag between the two systems, so downloading a demo, installing it onto his machine, and then playing it via VNC is going to be very difficult to do as well

(0==== McAfee Manufactures Virus Threat ====0)

I haven't read the article, but these kinds of rumours have been around for ages. If it were true, and was actually proved, how damaging do you think it would be for the company concerned? I don't think any of the AV software companies would actually get involved in something like this. Not only would it destroy the company it would also severely damage the AV industry as a whole.

will it ever be possible to...

The mouse in the OS seems fine (or maybe I've just got used to it), but it's really hacking me off in Half-Life. In every other game I play under XP, the mouse is fine. In Half-Life, if I use the keyboard to move at the same time as using the mouse to look, I really have to wrestle with the mouse to get it to work. It just seems to ignore me most of the time. If I bind a mouse button to Forward, then I can hold that down and look without problem. It's just when I use the keyboard and mouse together. It all worked flawlessly under Windows 2000, so there must be something in XP. I've tried command line switches to HL, tried it in compatibility mode, tried registry tweaks and all-sorts. It just won't work properly. Anyone else got any ideas?

Will my PSU handle it all!

Quote: if its 300watt leave it..all this crap about bad psu and board support is pants,,if it is 250watt then thats a worry but 300watt can handle the most demanding setups. It's not pants at all, I have an Epox 8K7A+ mobo and an Enermax 350W PSU, and my voltages are low. I'm not the only person with this problem either. If a "300W PSU can handle the most demanding setups" do you think that they make 500W PSUs just because they can?
  10. I'm currently running Win2k Pro with Outlook 2002, and am planning a hardware upgrade this weekend. I'll also be upgrading to WinXP. I've run into a minor problem with exporting stuff from Outlook though. I have exported all the emails and the rules I use without problem. I can't see an easy way to export the account settings and my address book. Yes, I could write them all down, but there must be a way of simply exporting the data so I can reimport it into Outlook once I have everything reinstalled. I've had a nosey through the help files and the MS support site but can't find anything. If there's a way to do it, can someone let me know please. Cheers.

How to export Outlook 2002 settings?

Quote: What gets me is some of you still use pen and paper! You have a computer for christ sakes!!!! Copy and paste your settings and contacts into a txt file and save it where ever. One of the reasons I was using pen and paper was becuase I was formatting the system. And besides, the password box is asterisked out. Fat of lot of good copy and paste will do for that! I'm sorted now anyway, thanks

Will my PSU handle it all!

Quote: If it's an Enermax PSU, you might want to consider getting a new one as these and Epox boards seem to have a major issue when paired togehter. Thank you, that was the point I was trying to get at, and not the 'your PSU is underpowered' one. It's to do with the mobo and PSU combination.

Will my PSU handle it all!

I doubt it. The Epox boards have very poor power regulation features. If you use Motherboard Monitor, check out your 12v and 5v voltages. You'll probably find that like mine, they are a fair bit lower than they should be. I have an Enermax 350 watt PSU and it that doesn't help either. If you have a PSU that has adjustable pots inside them, you can tweak up the voltages a bit. Otherwise you'll need something with more oompf I'm afraid.

Updating Norton Antivirus subscription on two PC's

Quote: Blade Runner......... Silly me to assume, since I can install NAV2000 v. 6.0 on both of my machines without having to pay for the program twice, that I should be able to install the definition updates on both machines without paying for the same information twice. Oh well, .00 isn't going to break the bank. Really? I'm sure that goes against the license agreement. I'd be very surprised if it says that one copy of the software can be installed onto multiple computers. I've just tried to look for license for my copy of SystemWorks 2002, but can't find it. I guess it must be electronic and you have to agree to it to install the software. Just because you can install software onto more than one PC at a time, that doesn't mean that it is legal to do it.

    Refresh Rate Fix

Most non-nvidia cards don't have a refresh rate problem.

Anyone seen this happen with Max Payne

I haven't played the game recently, but previously I had a similar problem when running it under XP. Grabbing the latest patch for Max Payne fixed the problem though.

    DirectX 9

Yup, agreed. I got burnt by a DX8 beta. Never again will I run beta versions of it.

    home network setup

Double check the Internet Settings on the other machines, and make sure that they are set to connect to the Internet via a LAN. Also make sure you have Microsoft Networking and File and Print Sharing installed on all machines. You can untick the box for File and Print Sharing on the NIC that's connected to the Internet. Make sure all 3 PCs are in the same workgroup. Completely empty the IE cache on the machine that connects directly to the net. I've had some bad cached pages that have caused problems with some of my networked PCs when they try and access the net. I think that should cover the basics.

The static IP addresses you have assigned are wrong. They should 192.168.0.* If you change them to that it should work

Updating Norton Antivirus subscription on two PC's

I thought they stopped that for the 'home' versions of their software specifically to stop people from getting updates when they're not entitled to them.

Updating Norton Antivirus subscription on two PC's

I suspect it's one subscription fee, one PC. To update the other you'll need to purchae another subscription for it.

Anybody give SOF 2 a spin yet?

Quote: Medal of honur does far better WWII attempt, if that is what sof II was going for, as some one else had mentioned. Eh? As I said, I haven't played the full game, but what makes you think they're after a WW2 game? I don't recall M4's, and OICWs being the weapons of choice of the allied forces in the 1940s.

Anybody give SOF 2 a spin yet?

Check out http://www.planetsoldier.com/ it has instructions on how to enable gore in the demo. It's quite impressive I haven't played the full game yet though. I've heard mixed things about it. Some people say that despite all the hype, the AI is still a bit dodgy.

    Service Pack 3?

Quote: Micro$oft are obviously quite happy to make money from the hotfixes they sell to us users in the meantime. Selling patches? That's a new one. Got a link to the knowledgebase article so I can have a look?
  25. There isn't really any justification for waiting for MS. There are other Operating Systems available that would make use of 64bit architecture. In the server arena especially, the extra performance would be welcome. Once there is a point to running Quake on a 64bit platform, then maybe MS will look at releasing a dekstop based 64 bit solution. Until then it's the realm of the servers, and there are other OS's about for that. It also depends on how Intel implement their 64bit solution. My memory is very hazy here, but I think I remember something about Intel 64 bit chips not being particularly good at running the 'old' 32bit code. AMD on the other hand are planning on producing chips that should work just as well in 32bit as 64bit. As I say, my memory is hazy on this point, and a lot of it is likely to be marketing buff anyway
