NFS: High Stakes finally running on Windows 2000

There are a couple of mirrors of this guide to get NFS: High Stakes running under Windows 2000. Thanks to Rory, http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~goaz/nfsw2k.html http://goaz.redbrick.dcu.ie/nfsw2k.html

Doom III: How's it treating you?

Hey Alec, sorry it didn't work out for you. All I did was extract that file interaction.vfp to Doom3\base\glprogs. Then I executed Doom3. My ATI driver version is still only at Catalyst 4.7. I am waiting on official drivers rather than use Beta right now. 4.8 is due out early next week. In the ATI control panel I have AA/AF set to Application Preference, apparently Doom3 runs slower with AA enabled via the ATI control panel. I only noticed less chugging but definitely a lot smoother than it was before. My card is only a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB. Running the game at 1024x768, HQ, 2xAA. I don't know what else to say, but I am glad it didn't mess your installation or PC.

AlecStarr, you might want to check out this Radeon speed up for for Doom3. http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14874 Worked well for me.

Doom III: How's it treating you?

Of course the only way to know for sure is to wait for it to come out and see for yourself. Consider: The three biggest engines for the next 3-4 years will be the Unreal engine (Which won't have another major revision for another 2+ years, The Doom 3 engine (which probably won't have another revision for 5+ years) and the Half-Life 2 engine for probably won't have another revision for 5+ years). These engines should run just fine on 2+ Ghz processors and X800, 6800 video cards for the next couple of years. I have played Deus Ex: Invisible War on the Xbox and its frame rate is pretty smooth. ION stated themselves that they targeted the console from day 1. That caused a huge uproar from the PC folk, where Deus Ex 1 ruled. The PS2 version of Deus Ex: The Conspiracy was a frame rate chugger. Phalanx does make a good point, and NFS Underground looks just like the PC version on the Xbox and yeah its a smaller investment if you have an Xbox already. While 2GHz processors are fine today they won't service the new Doom Engine, or the HL2 engine or the Unreal v3.0 engine for the next 5 years. Look at Quake 3, when it came out it could run on a P3 500. But trying to run Medal of Honor, Elite Force 2, or Jedi Outcast, or Jedi Academy on a P3 500 would have been unacceptable. When Quake 4 comes out, the Doom 3 will have been pushed to great heights by then, the 2GHz processor will be the minimum spec. These engines take on new identities all the time.

(i.e. must be upgraded first for noticable improvement) I think its a combination of things thats slowing you down, the 400 MHz bus is a bottleneck compared to 533 or the 800 ones. The i845 chipset is not optimized for high speed memory modules, I thought DDR333 was tops for that, and I am not sure about Dual Channel support. The graphics card is low end, the 5700 was what the 5600 should have been. If you wanted 1 upgrade part, then get a new CPU, P4-3GHz+ with Hyperthreading with an 800 bus, I am sure your board supports it. Check ASUS's website. If you can swing it, a modest CPU upgrade like a P4-2.8/800 with a Geforce FX 5900 or Radeon 9800 Pro could also work, prices for these cards is falling fast. But you would wind up upgrading other stuff later on like a new memory to take advantage of the increased processor speed. Also try defragging your hard disk, and I am not sure what kind of HDD you are running but 7200 RPM helps, compared to 5400 RPM drives. Good luck.

Doom III: How's it treating you?

It does seem odd since ID has always favored V-Syncing off as opposed to Epic which Tim Sweeney said himself, why bother disabling the V-Sync, it just causes tearing. But I don't know why Doom 3 is capped at 60?????????

Doom III: How's it treating you?

Installed the game and it runs fine, not sure about FPS but it seems smooth enough at 1024 at High and is fine at 800, apparently ATI has beta 4.9 Catalyst drivers out to help improve performance on Doom 3, http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4547.html Give it a whirl.

    PC Speaker Talk

Need some opinions on this: I have always debated whether or not 4.1 or 5.1. or 6.1 and even 7.1 speakers are worth setting up or not. My desktop space is limited and my current 4.1 setup is awful, its the Altec Lansing ACS54 4.1 setup with a measly 40 watts, 20 for the subwoofer and 5 for each satellite. I just recently got a Sound Blaster Audigy 2, which can support 6.1 audio, but my current 4 speaker setup is limited as is my desk space, I have all 4 speakers set up in front of me, which makes rear sound pretty useless, I have been thinking of buying a powerful 2.1 setup with high wattage, ie. 140 watts or so...what do you guys think on this?

    PC Speaker Talk

Yeah I guess its in the wrong forum...but yeah I do like music and audio and consider myself an enthusiast, but I have no space to setup a good 5.1 system or something, I can't put speakers behind me which makes the point of 5.1 useless, my current 4.1 setup looks like this: Rear>>>>Front>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Front>>>>>Rear Left>>>>Left>>>>>>>>>>Monitor>>>>>>>Right>>>>>Right Its completely awful but I got no room behind me since I have a bed there, and I want something with high watts so I can every small detail. I hooked my PC up to my Sharp Mini System that has 100 watt speakers and man did it ever sound sweet, but to move the system is too much of a hassle and they aren't shieled either so the monitor was looking funny. Lol.

    MS Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel

If your motherboard has an onboard MIDI/Game port connector you could just buy the Gameport bracket and attach it. Or buy a really cheap 16 bit sound card and just use the gameport feature. You could upgrade to a newer Creative Labs sound card like the Audigy series, they still have game ports, that connect via a bracket.

Can't Load Quake 2 Mission Packs!

Try the compatibility mode and set them to Windows 95, it should install then. If not go to planetquake.com forums and search for mission packs and winxp or win2k, some people have a method of manually unzipping the archives and setting up the games to work that way. Good luck. I know it works, but I have moved to XP now and I just set the compatibility to Win95 and it install fine. Create a shortcut to the setup.exe on the CD onto the desktop and set it for Win95. Then run the installer, it should work.

Audigy Original or A7N8X onboard Nvidia APU???

My sis has the same motherboard and uses the onboard and its good, the best onboard audio solution out there. My P4 board has a Realtek ALC650 codec on it and its crap compared to even an SB Live in my opinion. I put my SB Live in because I lost about 10-15 FPS in games because the SB Live is accelerated and uses less CPU cycles than the Realtek, and this is the only thing that sucks with onboard audio but the NForce audio is accelerated and much better than Realtek or VIA. If you want a good sound card, upgrade to the Audigy 2 series, a noticed a big difference between that and my old SB Live, and it would be better than the NForce but the NForce is better than the Audigy 1.

    Building my own pc

Hey AlecStarr, Yeah its been awhile since I have been posting here, but I have been upgrading my PC quite a bit lately and thought I would dive back into discussions. My next component to add is a Serial ATA hard disk. As for the Abit boards, I think they offer the best performance while still being competitive price wise. I find them a bit cheaper than Asus boards but they aren't marketed cheap like ECS or Epox boards. I have had an Asus K7V for my Athlon 750 and I put an Asus A7N8X into my sis's PC. Both boards are fast and stable but so are my Abit boards that I have used including, the Abit KA7-100 for my Athlon and my current Abit IS7. Plus the features are more and better than the Asus offerings.

    Maximun specs of NT

You know what was really funny now that I look back at it. I used to check out how old OSes would perform on my newer PCs. When I got my AMD Athlon 750 a few years back I managed to screw up the motherboard by installing a copy of Windows 95 Retail v4.00.950, yeah that corrupted the BIOS somehow and that motherboard was gone. I am just saying be careful installing NT4 on a newer machine.

    Building my own pc

In terms of preferences and opinions, I like the Intel chips. I find them to be better engineered, better designed, and give you the best performance for ALL the things you want to do with a computer. There are a few people out there who just play games, I play games too, but I am glad I bought a Pentium 4 chip, becauuse its quiet, runs cool, and gives me the performance I need to run multiple MS Office Applications, AutoCAD, Nero, encoding and decoding DVD and audio, and plays my games like Painkiller, and Far Cry quite fast. I suggest you consider the P4 processors, Intel just launched the new line of chipsets with the new socket interface, that interface should be around quite awhile just like the 478 pin interface we have seen with P4s for a few years now. In terms of motherboard I have had success with Abit boards and Asus boards, either is good, just pick the one with the options you want. Today's motherboards have tons of great stuff like Gigabit LAN ports, USB 2.0, and Firewire. Sound cards in general just stick with Creative, they are great and the Audigy 2 ZS and Audigy 2 are great cards. I have the Audigy 2 and paid less than the ZS model, essentially the ZS has 7.1 speaker support over Audigy 2's 6.1 support. My system that I put together last year: Intel P4-2.4C Abit IS7 motherboard 1 GB Dual Channel DDR400 Western Digital 80GB ATA100 Hard Disk Since then I upgraded my Sound Blaster Live to a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and upgraded my Radeon 8500 LE to a Radeon 9800 Pro. The 9800s are going for cheap right now, get one while you still can.

Game Pad and Call of Duty

I don't think that the Hammerhead joystick works correctly on Windows XP, but in any case you need to enable joystick support in Call of Duty, I think you can do so through the console. Try asking on the Planetcallofduty.com forums.

    Doom III Release Date Guesses?

Wow there have been some changes aroound here...honestly I dislike this new forum look...oh well. As for Doom 3, it will be out by the end of summer, EB has estimated June 16, but my guess is end of June or probably July. It will beat Half-Life 2 to shelves, its nearest competitor in the FPS market. But other great games like STALKER, and Medal of Honor Pacific Assault are also due out this year.

    Windows XP hangs at startup

Eurimouse, why is that all of your posts show up in the Windows 9x/ME forum, when they are clearly Windows XP problems? You'll probably get more help if you post it the Windows XP/NT/2000 forums, I wonder why your threads weren't moved there by the moderator either?

    Need system32 folder file

Can't you just copy the file from C:\Windows Folder\ServicePackFiles\i386 into C:\Windows Folder\System32 ? I don't think you need to use Extract or Expand.

For the old DOS gamers: OpenGL ports of CLASSICS!

The only way to run that game is MS DOS. Forget any version of Windows 9x. If you have WinXP or Win2000 installed on a FAT partition use a Windows startup disk to get access to a command prompt. Other than that install DOS on your laptop and run it from there. Of course you will need to configure sound drivers and cd drivers manually.
