Question on a BIOS PCI timing setting (performance related)

well I don't do device driver programming but I didn't say what i do is easy either. It is incredably complicated. as to the real question at hand - does each device hold the bus for the specified latentcy? NE1 know?

Question on a BIOS PCI timing setting (performance related)

well alec I am not a device driver programmer so i don't know this stuff for sure either. You really need to ask Jeh at 2cpu.com he can sort you out. Anyway here is what i remember/know I read somewhere sometime that the latentcy time that you set is how long the card can hold the bus not how long the card will hold the bus. If this is true then every one should have the latentcy as high as possible. I think that the real reason that the setting is there is not for performance but for compatibility. I.E. as someone mentioned earlier VIA boards have problems with pci cards which may sometimes be resolved by messing with this setting. VIA makes total shit so this makes sense. As I have an i840 chipset and mulitple pci busses on my board this setting really doesn't amount to crap on my system unless you set it too low. If you do that you are then causing bottlenecks i think because you limit how much each card can do at one time there for each card has to do a little bit then wait then do some more and so on. I don't really have any isses with that here because i have the high banwidth cards on the separate 64 bit bus. Basically all i have is theory just like you but if my theory is right then you want to have it set high maybe even highest possible. Then again it depends waht you are doing. If it is lots of little requests then you want a medium low setting. Things like a server with lots of random file access perhaps. If you have large sustained transfers then you want a high setting. Like Video capture. This is pretty much why i recomended something in the middle. People like you and me are multitaskers. I run every application i use in a day all the time. I don't really do much video editing anymore but setting the latentcy high did make an improvement in the sustained transfer then. Once again i beleive things i have read stated that it was how long a card could hold the bus. Not that it would hold it that long for every request. I do web application programing and SQL databases. Which couldn't be further from device driver programming. THe closest thing i do to even memory managment is designing tables in MS SQL so that certain fields will line up on certian datapages. So basically i am all theory here. but i do have some experience messing with this stuff. -Jeff

Question on a BIOS PCI timing setting (performance related)

alec higher setting is generally better I had to set mine pretty high to get my video editing stuff to work. the idea is that on device can hold the bus for longer with a higher setting. the downside to a higer setting is that it will in turn increase the time it takes for another card to get the bus and if that other card doesn't need it for that long i beleive it will hold it that long anyway. For you i would go somewhere right in the middle like 64 -Jeff

what the hell happened to this forum

Alec get real you are not going to drop your internet connection to save money that is F***ING rediculous. If I stopped using the internet I would loose money because I am a software developer. (you are to last time I checked)

what the hell happened to this forum

well it seems i have started some action up here at the forum unfortunately just more of the same I guess my answer to my question is that there is no real excitment in the windows world with longhorn far off xp getting stale and 2k3 working very well. I have become much more interested in the 2cpu forums as i am an avid Dual user and the fact that they have so many members posting such a variety of things all the time. The problem with this forum is that it is so specific to NT that it only heats up when there is a lot of excitment about NT right now there is not.
  10. I have an old gateway gx-450xl it has a daul pii xeon motherboard in it based on the 440gx chipset the system came with one p2 450 xeon 512k processor and a terminator card. I ordered a matched pair of p2 xeon 450 512k processors and installed them. No luck it says that the cache is disabled and it only recognizes one of them. if have tested both processors individualy and they both work fine. when i boot the computer with both of them in there it runs really slow due to the cache being disabled. latest bios updateds are installed. i did install a new video card at the same time but i doubt that that would cause the second processor and the cach not to be recognized. Are there different versions of the p2 xeon that support dual mode. If there ar that sucks because i have three single ones. -Jeff

got it installed and it works perfectly get this win 2003 auto detects the second processor and installs the multiprocessor HAL all by itself.

sorry i didn't post back sooner you guys really went nuts on this anyhow i am a member of 2cpu also as alec mentioned and i got my answer there (and here from dumez albeit a bit later) the answer was the missing VRM I have ordered one from gateway and it should be here on monday. I am glad i will have a second dually back I have a 2x p3 850 system on i840 and for some stupid reason i sold my 2x p3 500 440bx system anyway the second p2 will be a nice upgrade because i am using that machine 2 days a week as my primary computer now. tue and wed every week i am working at a my company's new sister company which is about an hour south of my office. It has been really fun to get out of town and work with another company especially because a lot more people work there and I am the lead software engineer. We are designing some pretty neat web applications using sql asp, asp.net, and php. I would like to move fully to asp.net but it is a tough transition to get everyone up to speed on it (myself included) It seems that even though the asp.net is more robust I still like the freedom of the near lack of structure in classic asp. there are lots of little tricks and shady manuvers that you can pull off in classic with ease. kinda got off on a tangent there sorry. *eagerly awaits his VRM that cost more than both p2 xeons* funny isn't it p2 xeon $14 a peice VRM $49

A very sad time for me - All should read

I was in a car accident a little over a week ago with some of my friends. We were all drinking and having a good time. I was driving and I broke my back. The kid in the back broke his back aswell. My best friend of 7 years died. He was completetly FUBARed. It took them 3 hours to get him out of the car. Here is the news paper article. http://www.benningtonbanner.com/Stories/0,1413,104~8676~2000015,00.html Lesson is don't drink and drive.

  18. after running adaware and spy bot for the forth time today then reinstalling my os i finally figured it out. the answer to my problems was there all along...VMware i installed vmware and now i can just do all my surfing and shady p2p searching inside a virtual machine and as soon as that install gets crapified i can just reinstall with no downtime whatsoever. My comp is plenty fast so surfing with vmware in fullscreen mode is plenty fluid. Ha ha stupid crap software i finaly figured out how to be free of you. Now vmware is not cheap ($300) but it is a small price to pay to be free of this crap once and for all. this is the happiest day so far this year. the shit has gotten damn rediculous recently. It seems like i have spent more time fixing my damn computer than working this year. Typical day would include uncrapifing pc to get 2 hours work done only to come back the next day and do it all over again. WTF? anyway free at last free at last. i would sugest this solution to anyone who can afford it because for me it pays of in a day or two. For those who are don't use the computer for work it probly will not pay for itself except in frustration saved. I can finally complete my programming with ease and get on to the fun stuff.

    Anyone tried Longhorn 4051?

i have 4051 running right now. It is a bit funky with explorer crashing sometimes, but the system its self is very stable. I like it a lot. It is fast as hell. It installs in like 15 mins as opposed to the 30-45 that 2k and xp took.

Network Drives and Need for Speed: Road Challenge

Quote: Thanks Four and Twenty, that helped. Also, I think I might've found the source to my NFS4 problem. I think it's the sound. The windows sounds play fine, but I can't hear any sound in movies although I'm sure I have the appropriate codecs and filters, and there isn't any sound in certain programs like console emulators. What's up with that? glad to help
