  1. I would like also suggest winroute for internet sharing. It has alot of useful options and taught me alot about networking. You have to go through the help files a bit but once you understand how it works it is very powerful. Right now Im running a quake3 server off of my client machine that is accessible from the internet.

Of course it has a nat, firewall and packet filtering and every other little deal. Its just a little bit more advanced than ics and sygate.

  2. set the client to obtain ip automatically. Everything else on client should be blank. Disable dns ect..ect. On the server open network properties right click the nic with your dsl connection and then hit configure. Click the sharing tab and then click enable sharing. It will then tell you it is adjusting your other nic. Viola.

  3. Yeah warftp is nice and all it has a very nice interface and one of the best for setting up accounts but its buggy and has a security problem. Check out the homepage for details on that. I would either wait for version 3.0 which should be out soon or get g6ftp. It has more options then serv-u little less options then warftp but less hassle. Plus its secure. No reported exploits so far.

  4. first:

Try removing the nic and reinstalling it with any updated drivers from there website if you can. Verify that everything is set to obtain automatically.

Then if it still doesnt work change the media type to 10baset instead of autodetect because cable modems only support 10mbit.

Do you have any other nics installed? Any conflicting network software?

  5. definetly check the connection types between a win2k machine and win9x machine. Ive got experience with this one myself. It will cause intermittent access or wont even work at all on autodetect. I guess this a problem with only certain nics.

  6. Ok heres my situation. I have 2 computers networked with a crossover cable and sygate for internet sharing. I was wondering if it were possible to run a dedicated quake3 server from the client machine and have other people access it so I can play on it too. If this is possible what ip # do I use or how do I set it up? I know how to do it from my main box but How would it work with the client? Maybe sygate can route it or something?

  7. You could format the win2k drive and then use bootpart to remove the win2k bootsector. Its around here somewhere. I got it from win2kbox.cjb.net. Or you could try reinstalling win98 on top of itself and that should do the trick also. THat way all your program files will stay in place. But you might need to update again.

  8. My head hurts from discussing this but I will add something anyway. Win2k loads apps faster and is stable( I mean stable! ). Games/speed will vary. Some wont work in win2k and you will lose some frames. My last test with quake3. I have k6-2 450 on a via mvp3 chipset voodoo3 2k.

    win2k : 30.1 fps

    win98 : 35.7 fps

I would also like to add that win2k is superior for lans. If you have a network win2k is a must.

  9. Its been my experience to never trust an upgrade install. Even though most of the time win2k does a good job ( feel sorry what happened to you man. That really sucks. ) I still feel like there could something wrong with the registry or something which might make it slower. Clean install I trust.

  10. I second that. It fubared mine personally. It gave me some funky error and then I was left with a mutilated ntfs partition that wouldnt boot. I say be careful with partition magic in general. It isnt flawless you know. They know that thats why they always tell you to back up your data. I say only use it when necessary. Like a gun. Its not a toy.

  11. Dont worry about it "J". But You should come to grips with what you said. Its ok to make mistakes but by covering it up and lying you are only digging yourself a deeper whole and giving everyone a reason to tease you even more. Come clean forget about it and move on.
