  1. I really hate to say it but it looks like I may have to reformat. I had finally broken away from reformatting all the time. I thought I finally figured out everything... always fixed everyhing if there was a problem. I benchmarked regularly showing that even after running the same install of xp for over a year an a half that I was still running top notch.

Guess it finally shit the bed. :-(

Sigh, or I could just convert to, firefox.... frown

  2. winsockxpfix didnt work and I still cant get IEFix to reinstall ie. When it asks to point o the i386 folder of the xp sp2 setup, it just returns the error that the files are not found.

    Here is what it says:

    copying files window

    files needed window

the file iexplorer.exe on the windows xp pro service pack 2 cd is needed.

I browse for that folder and the only file in there is iexplore.ex_

I hit ok and get a copy error window

setup cannot copy the file iexplore.ex_

please make sure the location of that file is correct, ect...

    it is.

    Doesnt work.

    WTF?

  3. IEFix didnt work.

Someone downloaded spyware from a website while using my computer the other day. I had disabled my virus protection earlier because I was restarting alot while trying to overclock the computer. Normally it would have never been able to run and install.

In the after fixing it, I did search around, deleting temp files and folders. I'm wondering if this had something to do with it not working. Seems to be the only logical thing.

  4. Well I ran through my check list upon first getting the problem:

Avast full anti virus scan with restart scan

Spydoctor full spyware scan with restart removal scan

hijackthis full scan and checked what was running

checked the hosts file (and all the files in there)

    did a netstat -a

    checked my running processes

deleted all casche, all temps, everything

went though and deleted old folders from old apps and mysterious looking applications

    ran some other scans

    reset to default settings

installed ie 7 beta (nothing really worked!)

    went back to ie6

    ran all the updates

And I guess now I'll try that fixer tool up above

  5. For some reason, I can't load a bunch of pages in IE any more. Sites including www.ntcompatible.com will display opening http://www.ntcompatible.com/ and then it will display Done with a blank page.

I have no clue why this is going on.

I have windows xp with sp2. I was thinking maybe I should try uninstalling IE and reinstalling it but I dont know how to do this w/ sp2.

    Can anyone help? Thanks.

  6. I recently found out that I cant run 4 sticks of this at ddr400 because my motherboard limits it down. But these sticks are wicked fast. The timings on them are real tight at 2-2-2-5.

  7. I looked around the net and found people all reporting this... apparently it can only run two sticks at that ddr400... above that it runs them at ddr333. I got a64 tweak and adjusting it to 200mhz is not possible. it just locks up. frown

  8. Ok, I tested the ram. The system insists on running at 166mhz for the ram when I have 3 or 4 memory modules installed. If I have installed 1 or 2 it runs fine.

WTF? The book never mentioned this...

I guess I'll have to sell these fucking fast ass pieces of ram and get 2 1 gig chips.

    What a fucking joke.... frown

  9. Yeah so basically it doesnt show my memory clock.... and now come to think of it, in my bios I have a setting that allows me to limit what the max clock of the memory can be so it doesnt bump its self over that limit on accident. I have it set to 200mhz and If I remember correctly below it, grayed out so I cant change it, it said 166mhz. frownfrownfrown. When I was just running the 2 sticks, I was getting 200 in that spot. Soemthing has to be up, but I dont konw what.

  11. http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=45099

I ended up getting another 2 sticks of 512 mb corsair xms pc3200 2-2-2-5. I checked cpu z and it said that I'm running my ram at cpu/14 so its about 150mhz... it should be 200. I used an older version of cpu z and it reported it running correctly. So I ended up flashing my bios to the new version and now I'm a bit confused. the new version is still reporting the wrong frequency. I checked the bios and I dont see any way to change it.

am I wrong here or is something messed up? Also with my processor, shouldnt my L1 cache be higher than 64 kbytes?

    whats up?

  12. A while back I picked up a new hardrive an when I first fired up the computer I thought it was making this high pitched noise. The sound was like a whistle, or a screech, this is high pitched, but not extremely loud. It still is loud enough to be obnoxious.

I later found out it was not the hardrive when I disconnected it. How ever, the sound started to happen more. I first noticed it happening alot when I installed goggle earth, as long as the computer was drawing lines on the screen, it made the noise. then it would make it when videos would first start up, and finally just any time small things would start happening on the computer.

It has become to bothersome now because in the middle of the night it will make the noise for about a second every so often, waking me up.

What could cause this? It doesn't sound like a fan scraping.... and its definitely coming from my 500 watt Ultra - X connect power supply.

I'll probably have to get rid of this thing. I cant stand it!

    Is this strange or what?

  13. I've been having this random problem in counterstrike source and day of defeat source where the game will suddenly crash causing the sound to loop and loop forever. I have to CTRL+Alt+Del to turn off the game.

I have two monitors and decided to monitor the task manager to see if one of my processes started going nuts right before the crash. I noticed nothing, so I then monitored my cpu usage.

The game typically runs at about 100% cpu usage, however when the game crashes the red kernel times bar peeks and holds at 100% usage! What could be causing the kernel times to peek like that and hold?

There is a lengthy thread over here where everyone gives suggestions on how to fix the problem:

    http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/sh...mp;pagenumber=1

Mainly their suggestions are doing things that shouldn't be done like turning off several features in the game. All of which don't really work. The game still randomly crashes. I can play forever, or sometimes only for 5 minutes.

I've gone as far as to swap video card from nvidia to ati, and sound cards from sblive to sb audigy 2 zx. I've done a million of the other suggestions, but it still does it.

What is troubling me is that kernel time peek and since I am one of the rare people that have two monitors, I think I may be the only one who has figured this out. Anyone have a clue what causes those times to peek? that may lend a hand into figuring out what is causing this problem.
